  • What exactly is meant by 'marriageable'?? Interesting to note that a single parent was something of a pariah...

I love William Schallert. Something about his voice.... I loved him as Patty Duke's dad in the 'The Patty Duke Show' and it was wonderful to see him in this episode as the Reverand. He was shy and a bit on the clumsy side and a wonderful stand out in this story. He is in love with Polly, the oldest of the Brides, and makes overtures to taking their friendship further. But Polly has a secret and he's unexpectedly on board Clancy's ship enroute to Seattle. The story quickly changes from one in which the Bolt Bros. mountain is in jeopardy because one of the brides is deemed 'unmarriageable' as she is secretly a widow with a child.....to one with the age old dilemma of a mother choosing between her child and the man she loves. The story plays out as it has in countless episodes on countless shows before and after this one but it is handled effectively by Shallert and Stefan Arngrim as Polly's son, Tommy. Of course Jason has a hand in convincing Tommy that being a family in Seattle is better than being alone with his unhappy mother in San Fransisco....and the mountain is saved once again.moreless
