  • parkman

Here we get another favortie in Parkman, who has super hearing, and of course he is in trouble With his boss. Great Development in this show so far.
  • Something´s wrong

  • Nikki wakes up to find two corpses beside her, while Claire asks about her biological parents. We meet up with Matt Parkman, a policeman with a very useful ability.Hiro realises not only he travelled through space but also through time.moreless

The second chapter unfolds quite nicely as the story of the first volume continues. Peter ends up in the hospital after he jumped from a tall building and saved by his brother Nathan who flew and caught him. Nathan denies the truth and hides his ability to fly while the mystery of the identity of Peter's power continues. Furthermore, we find out that Peter's father committed suicide.

Nikki wakes up to find two dead bodies beside her with no recollection of their deaths. The only evidence is the video camera. More strange things happen as while she is driving she ends up in a desserted place and she doesn't remember how she got there in the first place. While following notes and hints from an unknown source she ends up unearthing secrets she never wanted to.

We meet up with Matt Parkman, a policeman who discovers he can hear people's thoughts when he finds a little girl hiding from the rest of the police force. The head of the police investigation (which involves a serial killer named Sylar) interrogates Matt as to how he knew where to look for the little girl and she doesn't get the answer she was looking for. After this incident Matt becomes an FBI agent.

Hiro realises that he has travelled in time as well after he witnesses both a murder and a bomb exploding five weeks later than he thought.

Isaac Mendez still recovering from the rehap refuses to quit drugs believing it's the only way to keep painting the future and stop a bomb from exploding.

Zack, Claire's friend, loses the tape with all of Claire's attempts on and it ends up in the most unexpected hands.

Mohinder continues to discover pieces of the puzzle that was his father's research, while we are introduced to Sylar (both through Mohinder's as well as Matt's story) the serial killer.

Overall this is a great continuance to a great pilot which will definitely keep you glued to the TV and asking for more.

Important fact: Notice the little girl Matt is saving she has a significance to the main plot as well as Nathan's refusal to accept his destiny.moreless
  • Now that the characters are established, some details are filled in.

We know who's who now so it's time to find out what's going on.

Big revelation: Claire's father Noah is the same guy who was in Mohinder's father's apartment stealing files. Who is he really and who is he working for? Claire runs into a burning train car to see if she can withstand fire and rescues a trapped man but 'friend' Jackie takes the credit. Bet Claire felt like an idiot, she could have taken the credit with no danger to herself.

Noah has the tape of Claire's attempts and shows no surprise so obviously knew about Claire's powers. He claimed to be trying to find her birth parents, brilliant plan: can stall her indefinitely while appearing to do what she asked. Her mother is a complete lunatic!

New character Matt is a telepath and impressively rescues a little girl Molly after the serial killer dubbed 'Sylar' kills her family. Given how effortlessly he found her and somehow knew the killer's name, he naturally is prime suspect and is immediately arrested.

Niki's alter ego is protecting her but also wants Niki to know about it, and also is deliberately including Niki so that she also gets her hands dirty. This looks like a case of Multiple Personality Disorder as the alter seems to just take possession of Niki's body. The only thing that says it's not MPD is the way the men were killed – ripped apart with what looks like super strength. This isn't a power like the others have, it's very strange and I'm not entirely sure it even qualifies as a power. Hope this gets elaborated on soon.

Turns out that Peter's dad killed himself. While fighting with Nathan, Peter started walking on thin air. I'm still confused what Peter's powers are? The only time he can fly is around Nathan, is it something to do with Nathan?

Hiro finds a comic book by Isaac which details his life, even quoting dialogue!

And the most important revelation of the episode: Hiro's trip into the future shows New York will be destroyed by an atomic explosion five weeks from now. I'm gonna take a leap of logic here and say our characters have to do something about that!

    Last thoughts:

    - Surprised to see Stacy Haiduk and with gorgeous red hair. Wonder if she's going to become a bigger character or is she just temporary?

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (8)

    • While the detectives are arresting Hiro in Isaac's apartment, they hear the explosion before the shock wave hits, but the shock wave would travel faster than sound.

    • When Niki is watching the video of her stripping for the Linderman guys, the voice over the part where she is lifting her shirt says "that's the way I like it". On the pilot episode when that scene was shot, the same voice says "look at that belly".

    • At the end of the episode, when you see Hiro teleport back onto the train, you can see that he was just superimposed onto the same scene from the first episode if you notice what is unmistakably Hiro's arm protruding behind him.

    • When Niki first gets into the convertible it has no rear view mirror but later when driving through the desert it does.

    • When Hiro buys the comic book, he pays with a 1000 yen note. This translates into approximately $8.48 American. As the newsstand price for comics is usually about $2.99 (at the time this episode aired), the vendor actually got more than his money's worth.

    • The Detective questioning Hiro acts like he doesn't know what teleportation is. However, a few moments after that, he claims to have seen all the Star Trek episodes. So he should know about teleportation because it is used on the show.
It is possible, however, that he is just unfamiliar with the term because the word used on Star Trek is "transport" rather than "teleport."

    • According to his member card, Hiro seems to be a member of the Merry Marvel Marching Society, which disappeared in the 1970s.

    • The item found in the lizard tank is not a "portable hard drive," it is a portable USB flash drive.

  • QUOTES (16)

    • Matt: It's okay. It's okay. You're safe now. Look, I'm a cop. I'm one of the good guys, okay?
Molly (thinking): He hurt my mom and dad. Please don't hurt me.
Matt: I'm not gonna let anybody hurt you.

    • Peter: Where am I?
      Nathan: You're in a hospital.
      Peter: What happened?
      Nathan: You don't remember?
      Peter: No.
      Nathan: You jumped, Pete.
      Peter: Jumped?
Nathan: Off the roof of a 15-story building. You tried to kill yourself. You were a little wound up yesterday, but I thought you were just you being you.
Peter: What are you talking about? I didn't try to kill myself. You were in the alley below. I jumped and you....you flew.
      Nathan: I what?
Peter: You flew up and you caught me.
Nathan: You jumped, Peter. Twenty-five feet to a fire escape. I climbed up and carried you down. That's what happened. The rest is just crazy talk. Understand?

    • Mr. Bennet: Claire-bear!
      Claire: Hi, Dad.
      Mr. Bennet: How was school?
Claire: Very school-like. How was work?
      Mr. Bennet: Very work-like.

    • Angela: Help me understand what you were doing on that roof.
Peter: Can't. Not yet, but I will. Just have to trust me.
Angela: There's something you need to know about your father's death. He committed suicide.
      Peter: What?
Angela: He committed suicide. I found him on the floor of the bathroom.
Peter: You said he had a heart attack.
Angela: I lied. For his reputation. His heart was fine.
Peter: But he had two others before that-
Angela: Well, I lied about those too. Suicide attempts, both of them. he finally got what he wanted. When he was 23, he was diagnosd with major depressive disorder. He couldn't help it, it was just who he was.
Peter: Why didn't I know about any of this before?
Angela: Your father and I decided not to tell you since the disorder can have a genetic link and you were always so sensitive. We didn't want you to worry about it.
Peter: But you're telling me now.
Angela: It can start with delusions, thinking you're invincible or indestructible. These are irrational thoughts that then turn suicidal. It's time you took a hard look at your life, and if there are changes to be made, I want to be there to help you. Because there's something else I never told you. You were always my favorite. I cannot lose you.

    • Sheriff: Girls, this isn't a criminal investigation, no one's in any kind of trouble. Quite the contrary. There's a very grateful man lying in the hospital who'd like to thank one of you for saving his life yesterday.
Principal: I've never seen anyone so relucatant to be called a hero. You sure it was one of our cheerleaders?
Fireman: Uniform said Union Wells High. I have to say it was... her on the end. (Everyone looks at Claire)
      Principal: That's Claire Bennet.
Sheriff: Claire, where'd you go yesterday after cheerleading practice?
      Claire: I, uh-
Jackie (steps in front of Claire): It wasn't her. It was me. I was taking a shortcut home and I saw the wreckage of the train... wreck and I just had to do something.
Principal: Why didn't you say something?
Jackie: I guess I didn't want all the attention, you know? That's not why I did it.
Fireman: Well, on behalf of the Odessa Fire Department, I'd like to congratulate you as an honorary firefighter. (Girls crowd around Jackie)
      Claire: How is he?
      Sheriff: Who?
Claire: The man Jackie pulled out of the train.
Sheriff: He's got some pretty bad burns. Smoke damage to his lungs, but he's alive. Happy to be so.
      Claire: Thanks to Jackie.

    • Brody (talking about football): It's not about having big hands. Some guys hands are too rough. Details. Mine are sensitive. Feel how soft they are. (Claire touches his hands)
      Claire: Wow.
Brody: But you've got dainty hands!
Jackie: My mom says my hands are very dainty. Maybe I should try out for the football team!
Zach: Claire, could I borrow your ear for a second?
      Claire: Hi.
Jackie: Hey Zach. Is it true you got an erection in the boy's locker room?
      Zach: It's really urgent.
      Claire: Not now.
Principal: Claire, Jackie. The sheriff and some fireman would like to talk to you.

    • (Opening Voice Over)
Mohinder: For all his bluster, it is the sad province of Man that he cannot choose his triumph. He can only choose how he will stand when the call of destiny comes. Hoping that he'll have the courage to answer.

    • (On the hospital roof)
Peter: Tell me what happened, Nathan. When I jumped. Tell me you flew. I want to hear you say, that you flew. Tell me or I jump again. (steps back towards edge) Good luck on your campaign when I'm splattered all over the ground below.
Nathan: All right! You want the truth?
      (Peter nods)
      Nathan: We both flew.

    • Isaac: I saw it, there was a bright light, an explosion that wiped out the whole city like Hiroshima.
Simone: Shh shh, it's okay, it was all a dream.
Isaac: No, I don't think so.
      Simone: Yes.
Isaac: I shot up last night. I had to have..
      Simone: Yes.
Isaac: I painted what I saw. Is it there?! Do you see it?!
Simone: Yes I saw it but you need to rest.
Isaac: We have to warn them.
      Simone: Warn who?
Isaac: FBI, Homeland Security, we need to tell someone.
Simone: Isaac, you can't paint the future. No one will believe you.

    • Claire: Cheerleading is hard work. Hard, treacherous work.
Mr. Bennet: Of course it is, sweetheart.

    • (Claire asks about her actual birth parents)
Mr. Bennet: I don't mean this to be condescending, even though you're gonna say I'm being condescending, but I really do believe this is an adult decision.
Claire: Yeah, you're right. That is condescending.

    • Claire: Dad.. Mind if I talk to you about something?
      Mr. Bennet: You pregnant?
      Claire: What! no..
      Mr. Bennet: Doing drugs?
      Claire: Dad!

    • (Closing Voice Over)
Mohinder: We all imagine ourselves the agents of our destiny, capable of determining our own fate. But have we truly any choice in when we rise? Or when we fall? Or does a force larger than ourselves bid us our direction. Is it evolution that takes us by the hand? Does science point our way? Or is it God who intervenes, keeping us safe?

    • Detective Furukawa: He says he teleported himself here.
Other Detective: Teleported? What the hell is that?
      Hiro: Like Star Trek.
Detective Furukawa: He says he can bend the time/space continuum.
Other Detective: Funny, I've seen all the Star Treks. I don't remember you from the show.
      (Hiro gives Vulcan salute)

    • Eden: You know, he told me he was being watched. I thought that he was just eccentric.
Mohinder: I like that you didn't use the word "paranoid."

    • (from answering machine)
Sylar: Hello Chandra, why won't you talk to me? You can't leave me like this.
Chandra: Hello Mr. Sylar, I asked you not to call here anymore.
Sylar: The hunger, it's... I can't control it, I don't want to. You made me this way.
Chandra: I made you a murderer?
Sylar: You helped me discover my potential. You wanted to see what I can do as much as I did, and now, you want it to stop.
      Chandra: It's over. Goodbye.
Mohinder: I found a tape of a conversation my father had with a man named Sylar. A man he thought was Patient Zero.

  • NOTES (7)

    • Even though this is the first time we see Matt Parkman's character, he was actually in the unaired version of the series pilot which can be seen now on DVD. He was edited out for time and the situation was changed. Originally, instead of finding a little girl, he finds a terrorist. NBC was not sure if the series would air at 8:00 or 9:00. If it aired at 8, the network was concerned it would be too mature for the time period.

    • The Symbol:
When Matt Parkman leaves Molly's house at the murder scene, the helix symbol 'Godsend' can be seen in the swimming pool.

The symbol is in top left corner of the 9th Wonders comic book when Hiro sees it on the news-stand.

Peter draws the symbol in his stick drawing of someone flying and someone else on the ground.

The symbol is on two paintings in Isaac's studio when Hiro goes to the future.

The symbol is visible in the DNA data in Dr. Suresh's computer program when the data flashes by on the computer screen.

The symbol is on a post-it note on Mohinder's map.

    • This episode actually aired in the United States on the day that Hiro claimed it was when talking to the police.

    • Music Featured In This Episode:
"Jatt Ho Giya Sharabee" by Panjabi MC
      "Eyes" by Rogue Waves

    • Powers Developments:
Hiro Nakamura: We learn that he can move through time as well as space. We find out that his teleportation from Tokyo to New York also sent him five weeks into the future.

Matt Parkman: He can hear the thoughts of others. Though he believes that he finds the little girl because he hears her whispering, no one else can hear her. Also, when we see her, we see that her lips are not moving. Further, he begins to hear what several of the police and FBI agents are thinking including the name "Sylar" which gets Matt arrested because they have not made it public and assume that Matt must have inside knowledge of the crimes.

Peter Petrelli: Possible ability to replicate other powers. We learn that Peter flew for a moment after Nathan tried to stop his fall, and then we see that Peter is able to at least hover when Nathan (who can fly) is nearby. Peter also does a stick-figure drawing of a future event after he spends some time with Isaac (who can paint the future).

Niki Sanders: Further evidence of an alter-ego personality. After blackouts, she finds that the garage has been cleaned and the bodies put into the trunk of a strange car that was registered months ago under her name. She also finds herself showered and dressed in different clothes with no memory of how that happened.

    • New Heroes:
Matt Parkman: A beat cop in Los Angeles, Matt wants to become a detective, but his dyslexia has caused him to fail the test every time he's taken it. Husband of Janice Parkman. Age: early thirties. Gender: Male. Hometown: Los Angeles, CA.

Sylar: All that is known of Sylar is that Chandra Suresh believed him to be "patient zero" of the new breed of heroes, that Suresh may have helped him develop his powers, and that he now seems to be killing other people with powers for some unknown purpose. Associate of Chandra Suresh. Age: unknown. Gender: Male. Hometown: unknown, possibly New York, NY.

    • Detective Furukawa: He says he teleported himself here.
Other Detective: Teleported? What the hell is that?
      Hiro: Like Star Trek.

Referencing the popular science fiction series Star Trek, starring William Shatner, which spawned several spin-offs and movies.
