Welcome to the Hetty Wainthropp Investigates guide at TV.com.

Armed with little more than her pocketbook and her prodigious common sense, the Lancashire housewife-turned-gumshoe has proved that she can easily match wits with the best of them - even if she has to take the bus to get to the scene of the crime. With her teenage sidekick, Geoffrey, and her doting hubby, Robert, how can she go wrong?

The series is based on characters from the David Cook novel, Missing Persons. That was adapted as a two-hour special by Yorkshire Television in 1990, but ITV decided not to pick up a series. Six years later, the BBC bought the TV rights to Cook's novel, and Hetty Wainthropp Investigates was born.moreless

  • A great mystery show.

    "Superb"
Hetty Wainthropp Investigates is one of my favourite mystery and crime shows, not because it is the flashiest, trendiest or quickest moving show around. In fact, because it is more gently paced and thoughtful, that is the reason why I love it. Hetty always takes her time pondering the situation and, when she has to solve something I never guess before her. Hetty and the brilliant Geoffrey make a great team together as they bounce off each other perfectly, him a more modern man and her more of a traditionalist. They should bring the show back or make more like it!moreless

If the Brits can do one thing, it's a proper mystery show!

It may not be the most hip, or fashionable show compared to say - CSI, but Hetty Wainthropp Investigates can definitely hold it's own as a quality product from start to finish. The acting, especially from the fantastic Patricia Routledge, is top-drawer.
The plots, although not hard-edged, are nevertheless more than enough to keep the viewer interested and are often as intricately detailed as any from the pen of long-standing mystery writers. More than anything, Hetty Wainthropp Investigates evokes a gentler era this show is highly recommended to those who want to sit back, relax and watch high-quality acting from the haunting opening brass theme tune to the feel-good endings.
