Hetty is called on by a pair of worried parents whose deaf-mute son, Malcolm, has disappeared while out bird-watching on the day he was to meet his mail-order bride from Thailand. Malcolm is on the run because he has witnessed the strangulation of a beautiful model-turned-journalist by her lover, Sergeant Steve Lennox, a rogue policeman. After doing the deed, Lennox sends the woman's body over a cliff in a car – and takes off after Malcolm. • This is the second in the series of the Hetty Waintropp mysteries. Not as good as the first, but okay.

    7.0
This is the second episode of the series about a sixty year old lady detective and her teenage assistant. The series is now 10 years old, but it wears well. "Hetty Waintropp Investigates" has neither car chases nor special effects. This episode is about a cop, Steve Lennox, who is on sick leave, as he was stabbed on the job. Although he is married, he has a mistress, who likes rough sex. Lennox goes too far one day, and she dies. He leaves her in the car and has the car go over a cliff. The act is witnessed by a young man, Malcolm, who is both deaf and unable to speak. The cop discovers that the whole has been witnessed by the young man, and kidnaps the young man. the actor who plays Malcolm does a good job of protraying someone who is scared when he is kidnapped. He does not overact the part. The folks who play the parents of Malcolm did a satisfactory job. We are told in this episode by Robert Wainthropp that Hetty was paid 1500 pounds for her first detective job. Good episode, but not as good as the first one.moreless

    • Dave the Rave: Any hot cases at the moment?

Hetty: I only do one at a time; I like to give myself completely.

Dave the Rave: Oh, I knew a young girl like that. But I was unworthy of her affection, Hetty, my love, because I was "Too High on the Music." (Cues loud rock songs, causing Hetty to wince.)

    • Dave the Rave: Now... (signals to Hetty)

      Hetty: Um, Mrs. Hetty Wain--

Dave: Hetty, my love. These flowers you press?

      Hetty: Um, eh, no!

    • Hetty: Hetty Wainthropp.

Receptionist: Which one are you, luv? Queen's biography, home for lost dogs, or pressed flowers?

      Hetty: Lady detective.

    • Mr. Stone: Your ad does say twenty-four hour service.
Hetty: I think, if you look carefully, that's the one offering personal massage.

    • (Robert is reading Hetty's newspaper ad)
Robert: Looking for a loved one? Hetty Wainthropp is here to help.
Hetty: It was a soft sell.
Robert: Soft in the head, more like. We ended up amongst the massage parlors.

  • NOTES (1)

    • There is an interesting clip of how closed-captioning (called 'subtitling' in Britspeak) is presented in the UK. It is in fancier font and is much bigger in dimension than captions in the US.
