Hey Arnold!

Season 5 Episode 4

Bag of Money / Principal Simmons

Aired Daily 6:30 PM Apr 05, 2000 on Nickelodeon

  • Trivia

    • When Mr. Simmons is modifying the school to make it better as his principal run begins, he can be seen taking down a school bell and hanging a set of chimes in its place. In real life, this would be a difficult thing to do, as school bells are typically screwed into the wall (instead of hanging on a nail) and hooked up to an electrical master time system that rings the whole bell system.

    • Monkeyman appears briefly in "Bag of Money."

    • Shouldn't Helga be with the others and consider Arnold as a thief and a liar?

    • While Harold is shouting through the megaphone in "Principal Simmons," it cuts to a group of kids bouncing Lila and Brainy on the school flag, and Harold is one of the kids who is doing the bouncing, although he is still shouting through the megaphone.

    • When Arnold is counting the money, the last bill he says he puts down is a one, but it shows a ten instead.

  • Quotes

    • Sid: (after Arnold gives $10 to the Jolly Olly Man and he's in the ice cream truck) Where'd you get the ten spot?
Arnold: Oh, it's from my birthday.
Sid: Your birthday was six months ago. How many birthdays you've have in a year?
      Arnold: I've been saving it.
(Jolly Olly Man kicks Sid out of his truck)
Sid: Why don't you break a hundred, Arnold? I mean, what's a hundred out of $3,937?!
      Gerald: Take it easy, Sid.
Sid: It's our money and he'd stole it!
      Arnold: I didn't steal anything.
Sid: Liar! You stole it and you know it! Your a rat, Arnold! A rat bink! You're all witnesses! Arnold stole our money! He's a rat, a rat bink!

    • Principal Wartz: (to Sid) You, young man! Yes, with the nose!

    • Grandpa Phil: (trying to cheer Arnold up) We'll grow old together... Oh, wait a minute, I'm already old! Well, okay, so you'll grow old alone with no one to talk to and nothing to come to, except your fun memories and...
      (Arnold gets sad)
Grandpa Phil: ...me and... I'm not helping, am I?

    • Simmons: PS 118 needs you back!
Wartz: Excuse me a moment. (closes door, starts singing and dancing with a doll) They want me back! They want me back! They want me back! Who-ho! (opens the door, gets serious face) Please come in.

    • Arnold: (Explaining what happened to the money) There was this old lady on the bus, and she had pink hair, and a peg leg... and one eyebrow. And she had a bunch of shopping bags, and she must have taken my bag by mistake.
      (Nobody believes him; later)
      Sid: Who is that?
Stinky: Looks like an old lady with pink hair, a peg leg, and one eyebrow.

  • Notes

    • This is the first and only time in the series that Mr. Simmons becomes principal of P.S 118.

    • These are the lyrics to the karaoke that Principal Wartz sang in "Principal Simmons":

      Once we were a team
      We worked side by side
      You were my dedication
And my single source of pride
Then you kicked me on my can
Toss me out into the cold
Did you think that I would fold
      Well I won't because I'm bold...

      I will prevail
      I will not fail
You may have thrown me out the door
But I won't cry or weep or wail
      I'll weather this storm too
Yes I'll keep on smiling through
      And while I'm turning blue
I'll simply share my thanks to you...

      I will prevail
      Right through this gale
Right through wind and snow and rain and sleet and fog and hail
      I will prevail
      I will prevail
      I will prevail...

    • In "Principal Simmons," at the end of their performance at the end of the episode, we see Coach Wittenberg and Trish in the audience.

  • Allusions

    • The plot of this episode is very similar to The Simpsons episode, Sweet Seymour Skinner's Baaddaasss song. In the episode, Principal Skinner got fired and was replaced with goody-two-shoes Ned Flanders. This resulted in the kids causing chaos in the school, and Bart tried to get Skinner to come back. In the Hey Arnold episode, Principal Wartz quit and Mr. Simmons replaced him, which caused chaos. Arnold and Simmons tried to get Principal Wartz back. In both episodes, Flanders and Simmons both say "I intend to put the "pal" back in "principal!" and Principal Wartz and Principal Skinner walk by their school at night and cry.

    • Principal Wartz: (Singing) I will prevail, right through this gale! You may have thrown me out...
Principal Wartz's karaoke song, "I Will Prevail," is a reference to the famous "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor.
