Grandpa's Birthday:
Grandpa Phil thinks he's going to die soon because no one in his family ever made it past his age. He prepares to die, and Arnold tries to convince him that life is still worth living.
Road Trip:
Helga and Miriam get stuck on the road together with no money. They get to know one another and Miriam saves the day when she wins a mechanical bull-riding competition.
"Road Trip" looks like "Quantity Time", but this time, Helga spends two days with Miriam instead Big Bob.
At the Wheeler Inn, Helga's nightshirt changes in color from pink to white, and Miriam's gown from white to violet.
A sign reads "Welcome to Washington State," during the road trip. Perhaps this is a clue to where they live.
The only time any form of the word "dead" is used is when Grandma sings "He died in the saddle," when Arnold points out that Grandpa's relatives were 91 when they died, and then when Grandpa responds "I'm not going to die!" (Note: Right before Arnold says "died," Ernie says "Is the old man-" and Mr. Hyunh says "yes - he finished.") Speaking of things you aren't supposed to say on Nickelodeon, note Grandpa says "heaven" and "the other place."
Helga: Me, Mom and Dad are supposed to visit my grandma in South Dakota. Arnold: Sounds like fun. Helga: I'd rather have a root canal.
Helga: Great! You lost the directions; we're totally lost on the road to nowhere, with a map of Wankyland!
Helga: Mom, please tell me you didn't leave your purse on top of the car again! Miriam: Helga, you know, I think that that is exactly what happened.
Arnold: No, Grandpa, you're still with us. Good morning, Grandpa. Grandpa Phil: What's so good about it?
Grandpa Phil: (Wakes up, thinking that he's dead) Well that's it...I must be in heaven. Wait a minute. Oh, no! Oskar's here! This must be the other place.
Just when you guys thought that this episode uses every word except "dead," Grandpa Phil says, "over my dead body" in a scene, unedited.
During the montage (series of still photographs to music), Arnold and Grandpa Phil see a movie with a man hanging from a clocktower. The only two (real) movies with this stunt were Safety Last and Back to the Future (Part 1). It is probably meant to be one of the two.
