  • This is how you do "Seahorse Seashell Party," the right way

When we look back at hey Arnold it would be kind of unfair to compare it to Family Guy since FG is a comedy show for adults, while Hey Arnold is for kids. However, in FG we often see that the Griffins are just bullies to Meg for no reason and we never find out why. Because it's funny to abuse your daughter? Here's where, Helga on the Couch did something like that the right way. We all know that Helga is a bully in school, and is angry at just about anybody who crosses her the wrong way. However, when we get a psychologist named Dr Bliss involved we really see a new side to Helga. As soon as she's called into therapy, Helga tries to hide her Arnold secret as much as possible but we also get a taste of Helga's life. We find out that her mom is a possible drunk, her dad is a big business man that's caught up in his work, they barely pay any attention to her, and her parents had an obvious favoritism of Olga ever since she was in preschool. Heck, even when she was in preschool her life was hard. Then we find out that Arnold was the only kid who was even nice to her and her crush even started to get her mocked. As a result she became aggressive to avoid being mocked. It's stuff like this that makes us feel sorry for her, because nearly all of us can have a life like Helga's at some point. Admit it we all had that one family member who didn't pay attention to you, played favorites, or even was the favorite. Even after she tells her secret to Bliss, we still feel that Helga's life could get better. So take note Seth McFlarland, this is how you write a show that deals with relationships in a family.moreless
  • Helga's secrets are revealed when she visits a psychologist. *SPOILERS*

    *SPOILERS*

A psychologist, Dr. Bliss, visits P.S. 118 and after witnessing Helga's brutish behavior, she decides she would like to have a therapy session with her.

Helga ends up telling Dr. Bliss just about every detail of her life: she was ignored by her parents from the time she was young; she hates having a "perfect" sister; and she fell for Arnold because he was the first person to really notice her.

Many times when I watch other episodes, the characters slightly annoy me, but this is one of my favorite episodes. I like that viewers learn something major about a character: Helga isn't just some bully who harasses people for no reason. She isn't sour and mean because she wants to be. Helga has been forced to put up a cruel front to stop people from crushing her.

Also, we discover exactly why Helga is infatuated with Arnold. He not only shielded her from the rain, but he complements her and gives her crackers. Arnold showed Helga kindness that she never experienced at home.

While throughout the episode, the audience feels pity for Helga, it ends with us having hope that her life will get better. (Unfortunately though, it doesn't.)moreless

helga sees a psychologist, who delves into her past so she can try and find out why helga acts the way she does and we learn things of her past. we also learn her TRUE feelings for Arnold (hint: she loves him).

A great episode, definitely one of the bests of the entire series, it just clicked so well, and we learn some rather interesting things about Helga, such as things from her childhood (such as her dad calling her "olga", her older sister's name). Overall, definitely one of the best episodes of the series, this episode gets an A+moreless

Helga is reprimanded for punching Brainy and is ordered to go to a therapist to discuiss her anger issues. There, Helga talks with the therapist, Dr. Bliss, about her bad childhood. The therapist then tries to get Helga to talk about Arnold, because she notices that Helga pays a very large amount of attention to him. Helga tries with all her might to stay away from the subject of Arnold. The doctor tells her that if she has something she is hiding, she should tell it now. Helga, therefore, reveals her feelings for Arnold to the doctor, who swears never to tell anyone.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (4)

    • Helga calls one of her fists the five avengers. However, she only has four fingers (or three fingers and a thumb).

    • Grandpa Phil appears only in Helga's flashback and has no speaking lines.

    • The cheater from episode "Spelling Bee" appears in this episode.

    • When Helga's off to her first session while in disguise, Phoebe can be seen with a musical instrument, though in its case. It appears to be a guitar case, but it is too large, so it might contain a cello or bass-violin. This is the only episode where we see Phoebe's instrument.

  • QUOTES (12)

    • Helga: Well I don't how smart she is, no stinkin' shrink is gonna make me give up my deepest, darkest secret... (Claps as her closet lights up) My love for Arnold.
(Plays a tape player as tribal music plays as Helga puts lipstick on her face and a robe on her)
Helga: Oh, Arnold. I called upon the power of my sacred shrine. (Puts on the Arnold-like headwear) Give me the strength and animal cunning to outwit the school shrink.
(A camera close-up shot of Helga's barefeet tangled in Christmas lights as she falls)
Helga: Guuhhh. (Falls out of her closet with the Arnold-like headwear on her head)

    • Helga: So it's okay to be obsessed about him? You know, the shrines, the 3 AM vigils, the chanted spells?
Dr. Bliss: As long as you're not hurting anyone it sounds like an okay way to express yourself.
Helga: So animal sacrifices are out?
Dr. Bliss: Yes, I'm afraid so.

    • Helga: I'm late for school and no one made my lunch.
Miriam: Oh, yeah, I did, honey, I put it out for you... it's... it's around here somewhere... (opens oven door) ...Oh, here it is!
Helga: Moist towelettes, an individual packet of crackers and... a can of shaving cream?
Miriam: How did that get in there? Uh-oh, uh-oh, that must mean the cheese fizz is in B's medicine cabinet.
Bob: AHHH!!! HOW AM I SUPPOSE TO RUN A BEEPER EMPORIUM WITH MY FACE SMELLING LIKE HICKORY SMOKED CHEDDAR, MIRIAM??!!

    • Dr. Bliss: How about we try a little word association? Now, I'm going to read off this list of words, and I want you to say the next word that comes to mind.
Helga: (to herself) Steady girl, you can do it. Do not say Arnold.
      Dr. Bliss: Love.
      Helga: Hate.
      Dr. Bliss: Rocket.
      Helga: Locket... pocket... Davey Crocket!
      Dr. Bliss: Football.
Helga: Head... ha... did I say head? I mean game. Football game.
      Dr. Bliss: Monday.
Helga: Night Football. (falls out of chair) ...enough word association.
      Dr. Bliss: Good Idea.

    • Big Bob: Uhhhhh... In a minute, Olga.
Little Helga: NO! I'm HELGA, Dad! HELGA!

    • Doctor: Principal Wartz, I'm Dr. Bliss.
Principal Oh, Dr. Bliss, I'm Principal Wartz. Welcome to P.S. 118.
      Doctor: Thank you.
Principal: (nervously) What do you mean by that?
      Doctor: Nothing.

    • Helga: If you ever tell anyone, I'll rip your tongue out and wrap it around your neck!

    • Helga: I love Arnold! There, I said it! I love him! I love him! Arnold! Arnold! Arnold! I'm absitively posolutly in love with the boy! I want to grow up having a fabulous life, traveling around the world with him! Coffee in Paris, roses sailboats, the whole nine yards, I want to have a perfume named after us "Arnold Helga!" I Love ARNOLD!!!!

    • Helga:So i hit him, so what? Brainy he doesn`t mind I do it all the time. What? You would sock him too if he was standing behind you breathing.

    • Helga: He makes me so crazy. I once made a likeness of Arnold's head out of wads of his used gum.
Doctor: Well, Helga, you feel your emotions very strongly, and as long as you're not hurting anyone, its sounds like a great way to express yourself. (Pauses) Did you say used gum?

    • Young Helga: I love you, Arnold, and I want to marry you.

    • Helga: So, are you a real doctor? I mean, if I suddenly had a heart attack, would you be able to save me?
Doctor: Well, there is a heart clinic upstairs, so this would actually be a very convenient place for you to have a heart attack.
