We learn that Melody's parents are divorced.
Melody: Its not going to work.
Buddy: What isn't?
Melody: Acting up, pretending to be hurt, running away. You can't make them be together.
Buddy: How do you know?
Melody: Believe me Buddy, I know. I tried all those things to and some things you haven't even thought of. They both love you so much.
Buddy: I know that.
Melody: And they didn't break up because of you. You know that too don't you?
Melody: I used to hate it when my parents fought. I'd wrap my pillow around my head and sing to myself as loud as I could just to block out all the yelling and screaming. And even though most parents fight at one time or another. That's OK. But, you see if they truly unhappy together its better off if there apart. I hate to think of that, but its true. I just wish I could fix it, but I can't. And you can't. Its not your job. Your job is just to love them both.
Sara Ernst: Buddy, I'm going back tonight.
Sara Ernst: You know that. I'm going home.
Buddy: What about dinner? What about dad?
Sara Ernst: Dinner was lovely, but your father and I are divorced. I have a life there and he has a life here. That hasn't changed.
Buddy: I can't believe you. I hate you! (runs off)
Melody: Buddy's decided his parents are going to get back together just like that and you guys are encouraging him?
Brad: Well, we're going to help him.
Melody: Your helping him alright. Your helping him to a broken heart.
(Jake sees a little girl coming from the corral screaming and crying)
