I gave it another chance.. I know I should have known it would be bad. However it wasn't as bad as the first. Why oh why did they cast the girl from Veronica Mars season 2? She is so incredibly annoying. The ending of the episode could have been worse. Everyone knew the secret instant messenger screen name was going to be Eddie. Who could have been surprised? I, like most people, thought that it would get better as the season progressed. I know, I know it is only the second episode but the change from bad to good is really slow for this show. I have to give Hidden Palms a little credit, they saved the show from being absolutely unbearable to horribly bad. Personally I don't even know why I am writing this review. Hidden Palms doesn't deserve to get any review.. I expected more from the CW.
Let's summarise what we found out in 1x02: Johnny was/is an alcoholic, Eddy killed himself and only Johnny's step dad knew about it deciding to buy it, Eddy claims to be alive though and Johnny's friend from rehab, Nikki didn't stop drinking. Maybe it is just me watching too much Prison Break when you get loaded with tones of threads and infos all the time, but in my opinion it is not enough for a whole episode. It is boring. Palm Springs seems to be the most boring and dull place in the world so far. What, people are so tired of doing nothing that they kill others?
It looks like I'm gonna giva up on HP. I'll wait til Wednesday to decide.
"Ghosts" is referring to Eddie, who committed suicide at the room that Johnny is currently staying in. When Johnny gets creepy instant messages, he starts to grow impatient. Meanwhile, his old friend from rehab, Nikki, shows up at Palm Springs. Greta and Johnny get closer while Greta warns Johnny about Cliff.
When Johnny sees his old friend, Nikki, he's filled with joy and shows his friend around Palm Springs. Greta catches them on a lip-lock though, which causes some jealousy. Nikki is a newly introduced character, and she's probably the most interesting character on "Hidden Palms."
When Cliff tells Johnny what really happened with Eddie, Johnny decides to talk with his mother and Bob about it and they end up fighting over it. Meanwhile, Johnny has been getting instant messages from someone who won’t reveal who he or she is. At the end of the episode, he gets a strange link from this person, showing him a video of Eddie. I just can't believe they're attempting to pull off the scary type of theme for this show. The theme doesn't match this type of show at all, and it really makes the believability of this show decline.
Nikki decides to go with Johnny to "The Shack" after Cliff invites them. When Cliff and Nikki meet, Cliff has no idea that Nikki is a recovering alcoholic, thus feeding her drinks. Meanwhile, Johnny and Greta hit it off and seem like they're starting a relationship. I hate to see Greta and Johnny together; can it get more cliché than two pretty blonds hooking up?
Overall this episode could have just put me into a deep slumber. I can't stand most of the actors on this show except for the newly recruited Tessa Thompson, who isn't even that good. The plot is getting way too far fetched and as for Greta and Johnny, it was way too obvious from the beginning. Liza isn't getting much of a story, so hopefully they'll give her something interesting and there might still be hope for this show yet.
In this second episode we learn a lot more about the characters and new character Nikki is introduced.
The best things about this episode was the ending, I loved that. The AA meeting and party was fun too.
Cliff does seem to become the psycho in this show (nice role reversal from his and Johnny's roles in The O.C.).
I like the little glimpes we get of people's past, especially Greta's and Cliffs's, they have some kind of history and it's related to Eddie or possibly even to Eddie's death. It will be interesting to watch this storyline unfold.
I hope Johnny will gave his step-dad a break, he doesn't seem like a bad guy.
The show continues but it didn't happen much in last episode the only thing real interesting was the end of the episode when apparently it was Eddy sending the online messages creepy! Besides form that I didn't like that Johnny and Gretta already kissed is far to soon they barely know each other. I didn't like also the theme song or the presentation it was pretty mediocre. The apperance of Nikki didn't bring much to the episode but lets's not jump to conclusions yet I will keep on watching the show for some more episode and really hope it gets better.
Johnny's friend from rehab returns and falls off the wagon when she see him with Greta. Cliff's secret is still a mystery. Johmmy receives some creepy ims, and informs his mom that he lives in the room of a kid who killed himself.
So Johnny's friend Nikki comes to find him, and she is still pretty messed up. I just hope that Johnny's mom and step-dad don't take her in like in the OC, just too similar.
So Nikki clearly likes Johnny, as do Greta and Liza, jeez. Nikki takes it to a darker place by drinking heavily, Greta reveals details about Eddie to get closer to him, and Liza dresses like a Marx Brother.
I like Liza, she is a good character, she does not seem to fit in with the others, which means she will get a revealing episode soon, say in two weeks with "What Liza Beneath" I just want to know why she likes mixing chemicals so much.
Greta has that girl next door thing, she is a bit of Joey Potter (she is pretty smart), Marissa Cooper (she is pretty messed up), and Peyton Sawyer (cause her mom is dead, and her dad is gone).
I still don't get Cliff, he seems nice, but clearly he had a hand in Eddie's death or he at least knows what happened, and maybe where he is, as per those creepy ims to Johnny. His mom is a trip, a Julie Cooper without worrying about financing.
Now for Johnny, he revealed how much he hates his Step-Dad and his mom for marrying him, and for moving him into a house where a kid killed himself. If I were an alcoholic I would have fallen off the wagon with this news. I felt bad for him, when he said that kids his age drink and have fun, why can't he.
But those creepy ims, who were they from, was it really Eddie or is it Cliff?
I am really liking this show, it is such a great guilty pleasure.
great characters, great setting, great plot this episode demostrates how this show has a lot of potential and hopefully it will continue for at least 3 seasons. I encourage fans of teen dramas, oc, dawson's creek and OTH to watch it it needs to get some good ratings in order to stay on the air. On to the episode Greta and Johnny are a great onscreen couple and the mysterious person on Johnny's msn i was thinking that it was Liza. Cliff devious character which is essentially what a lot of other dramas have been missing and I remember Johnny as crazy oliver on the OC lol lol man was that kid funny
this show is amazing...it got me hooked from the pilot and its not dissapointing me yet...I like nikki...but i think she shouldnt have lied to johnny that shes sober. Cliff is creepy and i know hes hiding something. I think Greta and Johnny had something to do with eddies death. The instand messages johnny got were creepy and the video at the end freaked me out. Also Johnny and Greta are totally adorable
I am still trying to gather my thoughts about this episode. Right now the show is still so new and still in the development stage; that it is really hard to make any type of judgment calls about it. I do know that Johnny is still trying to get his bearing together in this new place he lives. An old relationship, Nikki, has popped into Johnny's life that he knew when he was in re-hab or as they call "THE RANCH". Although she seems a little more interested in him then he does in her. Plus a party has revealed she still has a big problem with drinking. Johnny has found out that Eddie the former tenant had committed suicide in Johnny's room that he now occupies; as if Johnny needed to add that to his list of problems. To top it off Johnny is now being stalked on-line with strange warnings. And things are heating up between Johnny and Greta. Where all this is going, we have all summer to find out. But one thing I do know so far is that I do not trust Cliff.
still not to sure about the show....mainly because i want to know what this show is about at first i didnt like the show because pilot episodes usually dont entertain me much, i find the acting in the show is not so great, the main character Johnny gets on my nerves(preppy kid turned emo and hating his mom and whinig about everything), an d i though it was going to be another show like the oc and dawsons creek
but this episode conviced me to keep going... why????? well its because its the whole mystery of whats really going on in palm springs, what the hell are cliff and greta(i think thats her name) hiding, but mainly its the freaky ims coming from a supposingly dead eddie...
i cant say im in love with the show because im not but i can say that it has cerytainly grasped my attention
Johnny's old friend from rehab, Nikki, shows up. She has a confession: she still drinks. Greta gets jealous of Nikki and Nikki is jealous of Greta. Johnny learns that Eddie, the boy who lived in his room, killed himself. It turns out that Joe knew that but didn't tell Johnny or Karen. Johnny gets strange IMs from someone, but he doesn't know who. At the end, Johnny finds out that the strange person is Eddie.
This was a good episode! It could've done without the extreme drinking. I thought that the IMs were very interesting. This show just keeps getting more mysterious. I give it an 8.5!
I really can't judge such a new show, but I think that they should make some changes. It had funny parts and some good scenes. The death of Eddie was figured out in this epp and the Greta/Johnny shiping took a new high. Johnny forgives his mom for making him move and his rehab friend gets drunk.
I was looking forward to see how the show would develop, and I must say I am still torn if I should go on watching it; the show has only somewhat grabbed my attention.
The story and the 'secrets' are starting to be developed very nicely. The character/actor selection and the acting itself are decent to pretty good. There was an unexpected introduction of a new character that seemed unnecessary, especially as I am just getting used to the names and stories behind the characters.
Several of the scenes seemed very low budget. A scene that was supposed to portray a drinking party looked more like a selection of teenagers with way too many close-ups of asses being shaken and too many cleavage shots. This made it look like they couldn't get enough people to fill the room and therefore zoomed in on people to cover that up.
Strangely, there were also two types of camera's used which just leads to the conclusion of if they ran out of money?
The show is just starting. Let's see how the next couple of episodes are done.
Actually I wouldn't say this episode is way better, compared to the series pilot episode. There is not really much going on in this one, it's only a bit partying and some drama between a few characters - that's what really disappointed me! On the other hand, this is an episode which leads to lots of things going to happen in one of the next few episodes; i hope those are going to be revealing! I will watch the next ones, but something big has to happen for sure. Coz for now, i'm reather stuck to some other series which i more prefer to watch...
Well, I am not completely sure of all the characters names, besides Johnny, but basically it is about a kid out of rehab and how he deals about his enigmatic group of "friends". Drinking and partying occurs, of course, a show like this needs that.
This was the first episode I watched, and I was surprised how weakly acted it was. There were bright points mixed in, like Cliff's character is entertaining, and the enigmatic girl who seems to be the "nice" one, but Greta and Johnny really bring this show down. The Nikki storyline also didn't evoke any emotions, compared to what it should. As a person who has been a fan of teen soaps (I used to watch One Tree Hill until it got rediculous, and I loved OC) this is just weak, and I will likely not watch it again.
