Counselor Kim repeated the rule several times to the campers as a group "not to go off into the woods alone". Is it any wonder why he's so hot when he finds out that half of them are missing later on ? First off, it's the photographer Stan, and Ann who get off the trail going bird watching. Then Leo and Cathy form a search party of their own and wind up getting lost themselves.

All four strays end up at a nearby farm resident's home where they will be picked up and returned to camp.

Counselors Sharon and Kim hold a meeting with the sullen campers, where all will be punished. Even the ones who didn't go off by themselves ( Domingo, Tom , and Suzanne ) have to be punished along with the rest, for not telling anyone when the others went off alone.

They're banned from the overnight hike. Faced with nothing to do during that time, the campers ask if they could work at the farm, seeing that help is needed with the crops. And it would " be educational for them ".

After that, they get to do farmwork firsthand, milking cows, gathering eggs, learning about pasteurization, and picking crops. Even with modern machinery, farming is hard work.
