High School of the Dead

Show Summary

The world as we know it is over taken with a very sinister disease that turns humans into insatiable flesh eating zombies. In Japan, students of Fujimi High School, and the school nurse, unite together to survive the present nightmarish apocalypse. The story follows Takashi Komuro, one of the students who survived the insatiable outbreak, along with a few of his classmates, and a nurse, who band together to fight though the zombie filled wasteland.

High School of the Dead is a grim and tragic anime where life and death decisions occur on a hellish daily basis. These decisions are made by students, strategizing on how to rush though a horde of merciless zombies and get to a safe haven. On this bizarre trip a motley crew of students take on eerie zombies with limited weapons and sparse assistance from other survivors. Not only do these students have to deal with zombies, they have to deal with looters, adults, and even each others emotions and sanity. Wait, but it's not all a nightmare in this zombie apocalypse, because the group is mainly composed of beautiful ladies. So expect to see a lot of fan service, a multitude of gore, and some zombie killing action. Oh yes , let's see if this group actually survives this brutal nightmare.

  • There's a little bit of everything for a lot of different fans here; some great zombie action? Check. Awesome action scenes? Check. High school life? Check. Basically what I am getting at is that you don't want to miss out on this awesome anime.moreless

There are two types of zombie movies in my book; the "Resident Evil" types (the movie franchise starring Milla Jojovich, not the games) who go for pure aesthetic choreography and action, or the "Night of the Living Dead" kinds that actually get the concept of a zombie apocalypse and utilize the one thing that is so underrated in horro; atmospheric fear. What does High School fo the Dead fall under? It actually feels more Resident Evil. Does that mean this is bad? No, because there are Resident Evil types that are done right, such as Dead Snow and Planet Terror. High School of the Dead is heavy on action, but doesn't lose sight of the fact it is a zombie apocalypse anime incorporating legitimate atmospheric horror dressed up in some of the most horrifying and scary zombies you can ever find.

The first two episodes alone will have you hooked. It does a brilliantly spectacular job of thrusting the apocalypse into an ordinary and peaceful naive world, not letting you catch a break of the chaos that is amidst these innocent Japanese high school students, similar to the beginning of Dawn of the Dead (2004). We see how much a human made society, all the unspoken rules and fake barriers between humans, crumble in the face of the very own people that created them...humans that have become undead. The first two episodes when you combine them without the commercial breaks stack up to be the best 40 or so minutes of zombie chaos you can ever find in the genre. It is just that good!

Now, does this mean that the first two episodes made too much of a good impression the rest of the anime has failed to live up to the standards? Not at all. The rest of High School of the Dead is pushed forward by some rather unique characters. I mean how can you not be overly fascinated with a guns nerd cherishing every fallen gun he finds on the floor like gold, a girl that is confident yet quiet and can slice you up with a wooden sword, a school nurse that is a klutz with Pamela Anderson's bust size, and more. Okay, so I guess compared to other animes, even high school animes, the cast isn't too terribly diverse and original.

When you add zombies to the mix, even the ordinary can become extraordinary. It's just so intriguing seeing what these characters do, how they react, and how they carry themselves under such dire pressures 24/7 of having a gang of once human beings eat your brains out. Did I mention the action yet? Beautiful action scenes, sometimes a bit too glamourous and flashy for its own good, but more often than not you'll be amazed at the action scenes than disappointed. To heighten the action more is the horror it encompasses. These zombies are really some of the scariest zombies you can find. They're deceptively strong and quick, but most of all, their faces just scare the sh1t out of you! Other than one or two mediocre and average episodes, the only problem I've had with High School of the Dead is the ecchi. Not a big fan of it, and it took a lot of tolerance going through all 13 episodes of this anime when from my experience, this is BY FAR the worst offender of ecchi I've seen (I don't even dare touch those other animes that are heavy on ecchi). Every girl has large boobs and find themselves day in day out in situations where they are "coincidentally" having to show off their busts. There's even more than one panty shots of undead zombie high school students! WTF!

This just speaks wonder of how much of a great anime High School of the Dead is, that an overwhelming amount of ecchi that I hate can be entirely compensated because of its nice cast of memorable characters, great use of the zombie apocalypse setting, consistent pacing, awesome action, and downright scary zombies. There's a little bit of everything for a lot of different fans here; some great zombie action? Check. Awesome action scenes? Check. High school life? Check. Basically what I am getting at is that you don't want to miss out on this awesome anime.moreless

kicks it off at a high school(duh) where a bunch of classmates are going about there normal day when all of a sudden theres zombies everywhere in their school. they rise to the occassion and form a team to get out and basicall survive. this has nudity, hot girls, zombies eatting people, and hot girls killing zombies with there bear hands. everything a great show needs. there is of course plot twists and love twist within the team. the main character i think would be takashi. his love for 2 of the team mates becomes clear. and the gun geeks odvious love for the genius girl.....spoilars. all in ll if you like zombies, zombies apocolpes, hot sexy high school girls that kick zombie ass. then this is the show for YOU!!!!wish it was in eng though. but its still goodmoreless
