  • Joe’s good intentions go wrong when someone from his past returns gunning for Charlie. Can Duncan and Joe’s friendship survive?

In this episode we learn more about Joe Dawson’s character. Until this episode the audience did not know the reason the Joe walks with a cane or how he became a Watcher. This is one of the few episodes where the flashbacks have nothing to do with MacLeod. The episode opens with Duncan and Joe returning from Scotland in time to see someone shot in the parking lot of the airport. The shooter is Charlie DeSalvo, from the 2nd and 3rd seasons. The person he shot is Andrew Cord, the Immortal who is responsible for Joe becoming a Watcher. Joe is caught between his friends. Cord is the person who saved his life, carrying him 16 miles through the jungle in Vietnam after the explosion that cost Joe his legs. MacLeod is his friend now, he also owes Duncan his life, but Duncan is trying to stop Cord from killing Charlie. Joe tries to keep his two friends from taking fighting one another and Charlie pays the ultimate price. Another good episode showing why a watcher and Immortal should not befriends.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • When Joe Dawson steps on the mine, the explosion throws him into the lake. Later, we find out that it was strong enough to make him have to amputate his legs. How come, then, when he falls into the lake, there's no damage at all to his boots?

    • Watch Duncan during the final swordfight. The left leg of his pants, in the back, develops a rip that almost looks like it was meant to be a cut by a sword.

  • QUOTES (5)

    • Charlie: Look, MacLeod, it's uh, it's not so easy coming here, man.
Duncan: This is your home, Charlie. Always will be.
Charlie: Yeah, well... it's changed, I don't know. Uh, something's different.
Duncan: Maybe it's not the place.

    • Young Joe: What the hell's that?
Young Ian: It's a symbol. It means I belong to an organization called the Watchers.
      Young Joe: Watching who?
Young Ian: Those that can't die, like Sergeant Cord.
      Young Joe: Andy Cord...
Young Ian: Died. You saw him. You were there. You know it's true. He's an Immortal.
Young Joe: This can't be real.
Young Ian: It's real. Who are they? Why are they here? Biggest questions on Earth, Joe. That's why we watch, why we record their lives, why we don't interfere. You could belong, or you could say, "no." You could go on with your life. I could just fade away. You'd wonder whether this ever really happened.

    • Duncan: You know, no one knows more about me than you. But about Joe Dawson? I don't really know a thing.
Joe: Yeah, you never asked. And even if you had, I don't know if I'd have told you. You got a secret, you get in the habit of not opening up.
      Duncan: Yeah, I know.

    • Cord: Come on, Joe. You know about us. We're all after each other.
Joe: It doesn't have to be like that.
Cord: Grow up, Joe. That's the way it is.

    • Duncan: Charlie's dead because I let Cord live.
      Joe: But, Mac...
Duncan: I let you get between us, Joe. I shouldn't have. You and I, we're different. We got too close.
      Joe: But we're friends, Mac.
Duncan: We're different. It's the reason we stay apart. We crossed the line.
