  • Duncan returns to his home village and finds an old enemy.

Duncan returns to his roots, the village where he grew up and lost his first love. For Duncan their love is eternal and when he finds the bracelet he gave his first love Debra Campbell he feels compelled to return to Glenfinnan to put the bracelet back in her grave. We learn more about how Duncan grew up as the son of a chieftain, the death of his cousin Robert at his hand in a fight over Debra and her tragic death that followed. In the episodes flashbacks we see to first time that Duncan faced an Immortal. Before he even knew that he was one. There is good character development between Duncan and Joe. Their friendship is shown like never before in this episode. A friendship that will be truly tested as the season goes on. This episode is also Adrian Paul’s directorial debut. Overall great start to what will be the best season of Highlander.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • If Joe Dawson and the other Watchers know about Methos, a five thousand year old Immortal, one would think that the Watchers would have discovered the existance of Kanwulf, an Immortal that's only eight hundred years old. During that period, Kanwulf must have run into other Immortals who had Watchers assigned to them that reported the appearance of a new Immortal. Besides, the Watchers must have some members assigned into looking into legends in order to avoid missing any previous unknown Immortals.

    • If Kanwulf knows that Duncan doesn't know what he truly is, then Duncan can't send Kanwulf to Valhalla because a Viking can't go to Valhalla unless he's truly killed permanently. In other words, beheaded because of his immortality.

  • QUOTES (9)

    • Rachel: I'm Rachel MacLeod, and those are my ancestors you're standing on.
Duncan: Well, mine too. I'm Duncan MacLeod.
Rachel: Another one. Let me guess: you're here to find your Highland roots?
      Duncan: I didn't know I'd lost them.

    • Debra: I will marry him if I must, Duncan. But please do not leave me. I have to see you, even if it's only across the village.
Duncan: You're the love of my life, Debra Campbell. But it's too hard a thing to see that which you cannot have.

    • Kevin: Please, I've done nothing.
Kanwulf: We've all done something, Kevin.

    • Duncan: You know, it's funny what you remember. The heather blooming, the smell of burning peat, the feast after the harvest when the whole clan gathered and you thought the whole world was there.
Joe: I thought you were going to let the police handle this?
Duncan: This land came under the MacLeods once. These are my people, my clan.
Joe: Mac, that was four hundred years ago. These people are not under your protection anymore.
Duncan: Yeah, but I won't let them get slaughtered, Joe.

    • Donal: You're dead, dead. I saw it with my own eyes.
Duncan: Damn you! Who did this?
      Donal: Kanwulf the Destroyer.
      Duncan: Kanwulf's a legend. He's not real.
      Donal: Neither are you.

    • Mary: His sword. Claim it.
Duncan: I cannot. He banished me. I have no right. I have no clan. I'm not even your son.
Mary: No, it matters not who bore you. You are my son, and it is yours. Take it. Take it, I say! Let no man tell you different. You are Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod.

    • Kanwulf: I killed the man who held that. He fought well, for an old man.
Duncan: I'll do better. I'm his son.
Kanwulf: His son? You don't even know what you are, do you? Or what I am.
Duncan: I am Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod, and you're dead. That's all I need to know.

    • Rachel: (about Ian's sword) That seems to belong in your hand.
Duncan: No. It belongs in Glenfinnan. This is its home.
      Rachel: Yours too, Duncan MacLeod.

    • Joe: Look, why don't you stay, MacLeod?
Duncan: No, too many questions left unanswered. It's better just to disappear.
Joe: Yeah. I guess that's what legends are supposed to do.
