Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • Trivia: The 1872 flashback builds on the flashback first seen in the pilot episode, which only showed the massacre and the emotional aftermath. This story is later continued in season four's "Something Wicked".

    • Connor is conspicuously absent from the 1872 flashback, although it's an expansion on the flashback from the pilot. However, Duncan does mistake Kern's radar for his.

  • QUOTES (7)

    • Duncan: Richie, I know this is your life, but being a father isn't a part-time job. It's a lifetime commitment.
Richie: I know, but, Mac, every man's gotta face this.
Duncan: Yeah, but you're not every man, Richie, you're an Immortal. What happens when she gets old and you don't, or when the kid's as old as you are? What are you gonna tell them?
Richie: I don't know. What I do know is they need me.

    • Richie: Listen, I was up half the night, thinking about what you said about how we're not cut out for the two kids and a garage kind of thing.
Duncan: You're still gonna try and give it a shot even though he's not yours.
Richie: Mac, I can't turn Jeremy away. That's what my father did to me. This is my chance to have a normal life.
      Duncan: Good luck.

    • Richie: Well, you study Immortals. I figure you know more about us than anybody.
Joe: Hmm, except an Immortal. You see MacLeod every day. You got a question, ask him.
Richie: Ah, in some ways it's easier to talk to you. I mean, he's been around for so long, sometimes I think he forgets what it was like the first time through.

    • Richie: Maybe I'm the first.
Duncan: I wish it could happen, but it's not in the cards. We don't get to live happily ever after. Children aren't part of our lives. It can't happen.
      Richie: It just did.

    • Duncan: You can't protect them. It doesn't matter what you do, it doesn't matter how much you love them, or how hard you try... you just can't.

    • Joe: (about his bar) Hey, MacLeod, what do you think? Is it me?
Duncan: The truth? I'd say it was a little out of character.
Joe: You know, I wasn't born in a museum. In fact, I'm kinda tired of hanging around with old antiques like you. Look at me, I'm growing mold.

    • (when Richie thinks he's a dad)
Duncan: It's not possible, Richie, it can't be your kid, Immortals cannot bear children. We don't get to live happily ever after.

  • NOTES (2)

    • This episode marks the first appearance of Joe's bar, which remains a fixture on the show through season five.

    • Michelle Thrush previously appeared as Sara Lightfoot in season 2's "Bless the Child"--coincidentally, another episode that was centered on a baby of dubious origins.
