  • I standard ancient-grudge plot is combined with the return of Kenny, an 800 year old, and evil Immortal in a child's body. Contains spoilers.

Kenny returns, being chased by an Immortal who has an ancient grudge against Duncan. Kenny runs to the hospital and begs for help from (surprise!) Dr. Anne Lindsey. Anne calls Duncan, who agrees to help very temporarily. Back at the dojo, Kenny meets Amanda for the first time in 800 years.

In this episode we see Kenny for the second and last time. An 800 year old evil SOB disguised as a cute 10 year old boy is one of the strange twists that the Highlander format allows. Alas, a 10 year old actor ages too visibly to make Kenny a recurring character in the series, and inventing another child Immortal is too improbable even for Hollywood.

The main interest of this episode is seeing Amanda out of character. Usually she is supremely self-confident and happy with her life, but Kenny is special to her because she knew him when he really was 10 years old, newly Immortal, scared to death and facing an unenviable future. Meeting him again throws her off balance and has her wishing for the family ties that she can never have. Of course Kenny takes advantage of her feelings to manipulate and ultimately betray her, and she must choose between seeing him as he was and as he is.moreless
  • Amanda is reunited with a former student of hers.

This is the second episode to feature the child Immortal Kenny. There is a second bad Immortal in this episode Terrance Kincaid. He has a bone to pick with Duncan. Duncan led a mutiny against him when they were on a ship in the South Pacific. Kincaid was left on an island with no food or water. Now that he has found Duncan he wants revenge. The Kenny and Kincaid join forces to lead MacLeod into a trap and kill him. Anne Lindsey makes a return appearance in this episode after leaving the regular cast in season three. One problem I have with his character returning is that the actor has so visibly aged between since he was seen in “The Lamb.” Once you look beyond that there is some very good interaction between Amanda and Kenny especially in the flashbacks they were both in. Another problem is the excessive use of flashing back to the episode “The Lamb” It doesn’t seem to add to the story it seems they are just trying to fill up an episode that came up short.moreless

  • QUOTES (9)

    • Kenny: You mean I'll never be old?
Amanda: You won't look it. But you will get older. Maybe very very old.
Kenny: Unless somebody takes my head?
Amanda: That is the only way we die, and also the way we live.

    • Kenny: I'm going to die.
Amanda: Look at me, Kenneth. I have lived three hundred years. Many have tried to kill me. Big people. Strong people. But I'm still here.
      Kenny: How?
Amanda: By being quick. By using this. (she taps her head) You're small, yes. But you are very clever. You'll find a way. We use the weapons have.
Kenny: But I have no weapons.
Amanda: Yes, you do. You just don't know it yet.
      Kenny: What is it?
      Amanda: Your innocence.

    • Kincaid: Well, if it isn't the white knight. You taken the boy's head already?
Duncan: Maybe I'm saving it for a rainy day.
Kincaid: What exactly stops you? The fact he won't put up a fight, or is he not noble enough for you?

    • Amanda: (about Anne's pregnancy) So what's it like?
Anne: Oh, like all the cliches, you know. Carrying a watermelon, walking like a duck. And this, this is the easy part. The tough part comes when she gets here.
      Amanda: Are you scared?
Anne: Terrified. Now, you know, I'm a single mother, and work crazy shifts and weird hours. She's going to need me and the ER's going to need me and I haven't figured out how I'm going to make it all work yet.
Amanda: You know what? I think you're gonna do great.

    • Duncan: Amanda, I can't believe he's completely taken you in like this. He's not a kid. He's a conman. The only thing he wants are heads.
      Amanda: Not mine.
Duncan: Yours, mine. It makes no difference. He's taken enough of them.
      Amanda: Oh, and we haven't?
Duncan: Not like him. Amanda, he uses people. It doesn't matter to him. Good, bad, it makes no difference.
      Amanda: You say.
Duncan: I know. I've seen it.
Amanda: You don't understand, Duncan. Whatever he is, I helped make him.

    • (Amanda threatens to take Kenny's head)
      Kenny: You wouldn't.
      Amanda: Try me.
Kenny: But I'm just a boy.
      Amanda: Like hell.
Kenny: (about Duncan) Look at him, he'll kill me.
Amanda: Maybe. But if you kill him, I will kill you.

    • Amanda: When you think of me, when you, you know, if you ever had to describe me to someone else, would you think of me as a nurturing person?
Duncan: (long pause) Definitely. Is that it?
Amanda: No! I want you to be honest, okay?
      Duncan: How honest?
Amanda: Honest. I mean, tell me the truth, don't think about hurting my feelings.
Duncan: Okay, then, no. Nurturing is not the first thing that comes to mind when I think of you.
Amanda: Oh, I don't think you know me very well.
Duncan: Amanda, you're beautiful, you're smart, and you're a lot of fun. Nurturing's in there... it's just not high on the list.
Amanda: Well, do you think that I would have made a good mother?
      Duncan: Absolutely.
Amanda: Really? I mean, because I could take it if you don't think that, you know, I have it in me.
Duncan: You would have made a wonderful mother.
      Amanda: Really?

    • Anne: Your cousin's here.
      Duncan: Cousin?
Anne: From Wisconsin, he's in the chapel. I was going to call security, but what could I tell them? I have a kid who can live forever but he's only safe in churches?

    • Duncan: Are you all right?
      Anne: Yeah, I'm fine.
Duncan: Is the baby all right?
Anne: Oh yeah the baby's...learning to tap dance I think.
