Highway Patrol

(ended 1959)

  • Season 2 Episode 38: Hostage Copter

  • The robbers/kidnappers apparently are oblivious to the fact that their attempted getaway is being tracked from the air by a (very noisy) police helicopter, even when the low flying copter's shadow crosses the highway directly in front of their car.

  • Goof: A highway patrolman, while pursuing kidnappers at high speed on a winding mountain road, is seen driving with one hand, firing at least 10 shots from a 6-shot revolver.

  • Season 2 Episode 37: Hired Killer

  • Goof: One of the men to be killed is standing at arm's length from the assassin (who has not yet drawn his gun) holding a potato rake with the prongs pointed at the killer when he learns that he is about to be killed. Yet, he walks several steps away and then tries to take a full swing with the rake at the killer, who draws his pistol and shoots the victim. The man could have easily jabbed the assassin in the neck or face with the tines of the rake and in real life would have. But the director has him walk away instead.

  • Despite the fact that facial hair was relatively uncommon when this episode was filmed, none of the people asked by Mathews for a description of the killer mentioned that he had a mustache! This information would have been helpful to Mathews when he boards a bus that the killer is on and finds two men matching the description he has been given (but one is clean-shaven).

  • Season 2 Episode 36: Narcotics

  • Broderick Crawford sports a dark spot on the left side of his head in this episode, just below his receding hairline. It looks as though it might have been a scab from an abrasion to his head. The mark is not mentioned in the episode.

  • Season 2 Episode 8: Hot Cargo

  • About 22 minutes into this episode, the suspect Pop runs to put a "Closed" sign in the door of a cafe that has a sign on the front that says, "We Never Close".

  • Season 2 Episode 3: Trailer Story

  • Around six minutes into this episode, Chief Mathews is seen for the first time, sitting in the Highway Patrol station. A very obvious mark is on the bridge of Broderick Crawford's nose, which isn't addressed in the dialog and apparently the makeup department didn't try to cover.
