A History of Christianity is a six part miniseries broadcast on BBC Four in 2009. Hoping to reexamine the origins of Christianity, the Diarmaid MacCulloch hosted series factually scrutinized the history of the Christian religion in its four main forms: Orthodoxy, Oriental Christianity, Western Catholicism, and Protestanism. Hoping to encourage dialogue about the relevance of Christianity in the modern world, the series was well received by critics and audiences alike. The first episode discusses how the origins of Christianity lie east of Jerusalem and Rome. The second episode details the rise of the Roman Catholic Church. Eastern Orthodox Christianity is detailed in the third episode, while the Reformation is chronicled in the fourth. The growth of Protestantism is discussed in the fifth episode, and finally skepticism within Christianity is the focus of the sixth and final episode. MacCulloch, a Professor of History of the Church at St Cross College Oxford, excitedly narrates throughout the series.
