Andrew Jackson is The History Channel's documentary on the seventh President of the United States. Nicknamed "Old Hickory" because of his toughness, he fought to protect popular democracy and individual liberty for American Citizens. Losing both of his parents early in his life, Jackson was an orphan at age 14. Without a formal education, Jackson went on to become a country lawyer, relying on his own merits to prosper and make a career since he wasn't from a distinguished family. He went on to serve in the military, fighting in the War of 1812, and being appointed Major General after the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. Jackson went on to become a delegate to the Tennessee constitutional convention, and when Tennessee became a state, he was elected as their U.S. Representative. Later becoming a Senator and judge of the Tennessee Supreme court, the self-made man from humble beginnings carved himself out a successful political career. His career brought him all the way to the White House, and his opponents during the election called him a jackass, leading Jackson to use the jackass as his symbol, which later became the symbol of the Democratic party. See the story of the first common-man President, and how he became the leader of the country without coming from a rich family.moreless
