HISTORY'S commitment to honoring the memories of 9/11 continues with a modern marvel. The only structure at Ground Zero that will be completed by the tenth anniversary of the attacks is the National September 11 Memorial. Situated on eight acres within the footprints of the Twin Towers, two 30-foot waterfalls will cascade into below-surface reflecting pools, reminiscent of the voids left after the attacks. An illuminated bronze parapet inscribed with the names of the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives on 9/11 and in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing will surround each of the two squares, and a landscaped memorial plaza forested with hundreds of oak trees will form a park-like space around them. Architect Michael Arad goes onsite to describe the design behind his work, and contractor Chris Powers discusses the engineering challenges he faced when bringing Arad's design to life. As the largest pieces of the memorial are trucked into the city and put into place, this one-hour tour documents history in the making.moreless
