1912 sinking of the RMS Titanic has inspired years of conjecture and speculation, including numerous conflicting theories about how and why the liner plunged into the depths. In August 2005, a HISTORY expedition to Titanic, led by John Chatterton and Richie Kohler, found two huge intact sections of the ship's bottom, the original red paint still on them. Based on preliminary analysis of these pieces, a panel of experts led by naval architect Roger Long concluded that, due to a previously unknown design flaw, the world famous vessel broke apart earlier in its sinking than had been thought. When Chatterton and Kohler's research vessel is recalled by the Russian government on a 2006 return trip to the Titanic wreck, the duo heads to Greece to dive Titanic's lost sister ship, the Britannic. Titanic's Achilles Heel examines the hypothesis they formed while there that Titanic did have a fatal design flaw, and the Britannic was quietly modified in order to correct the problem. Watch in this revealing special as the HISTORY team continues its work, and answers emerge slowly from the murky depths of the Mediterranean Sea.moreless
