  • Bob Crane

    Col. Robert E. Hogan

    8.7
Bob Crane was born Robert Edward Crane, in Waterbury, Connecticut, July 13th 1928. In 1942, at the age of 14, Bob began drumming for the Connecticut Symphony Orchestra. He was dismissed a year later because he was not considered "serious enough." Shortly thereafter, Bob began a radio career which eventually took him west to Los Angeles, and landed him in the morning drive slot at CBS powerhouse KNX, where he became known as "The King of the Los Angeles Airwaves." His show was not only wildly successful, it was revolutionary. Bob filled the broadcast booth with wry wit and charisma, not to mention drums, chimpanzees, and movie stars. His show was the number-one-rated morning show in Los Angeles, and Hollywood's biggest stars were regular guests on his show; Marilyn Monroe, Ronald Regan, Jayne Mansfield, Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Hope, and Frank Sinatra, to name only a handful. It was during his reign as "King of the L.A. Airwaves" that Crane captured the attention of CBS television executives. He began making guest appearances on The Dick Van Dyke Show, among others. Soon he landed himself a regular role on The Donna Reed Show as "Doctor David Kelsey." However, Crane's character was dropped after two seasons because executives decided the flirtatious Kelsey, was "too suggestive." Then, in 1965 Crane was offered the starring role in a highly controversial television pilot about Allied prisoners in a German P.O.W. camp. The pilot made a splash and Hogan's Heroes went on to become one of the most successful sitcoms of all time. In 1966 and 1967, Bob was nominated for two Emmy awards - this would be the peak of his career. In 1971, after a six-year run, CBS inexplicably canceled Hogan's Heroes when management decided to take the entire network in a different direction. In the years following the cancellation of Hogan's Heroes, Bob stayed busy with various film and television appearances, including two Disney films, Superdad and Gus. Bob also remained a regular guest on the talk show circuit, as well as a guest host for Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show. In 1975 NBC gave Bob another shot at prime time with The Bob Crane Show. However, the show was not a critical success, and it was canceled after only thirteen episodes. For the next several years Bob showed his wares on the dinner theater circuit, acting and directing in Beginner's Luck, among other productions. It was during a 1978 run of Beginner's Luck that Bob Crane was brutally murdered in a Scottsdale hotel room. His murder remains unsolved and one of Hollywood's biggest mysteries.moreless
  • Richard Dawson

    Cpl. Peter Newkirk

    5.6
Richard Dawson was born in Gosport, England on the 20th of November, 1932. When he was 14, he joined the Merchant Marines and served for three years. During that time he made money boxing. He had to lie about his age, and remain tough so the older guys wouldn't hassle him.
In the late 1950's, Richard met a British actress by the name of Diana Dors. On the 12 of April, 1959, while in New York for an appearance on the Steve Allen Show, the two were married. Richard and Diana had a son, Mark, in 1960, and a second son, Gary, in 1962. They separated in 1964, and eventually divorced in 1967. When he moved to the states, he began acting on the well-known series, Hogan's Heroes, in 1965, in which he played the loveable British Corporal Peter Newkirk. The show ended in 1971. Not long after that, in 1973, he became a panelist on, Match Game, and remained there until 1978. While still on Match Game, he hosted his own show called Family Feud. His trademark was kissing all the female contestants, which was one of the things that made the show a warm and friendly program, along with his quick wit, subtle jokes, and ability to make people feel at ease while being on camera. Some people were upset about all the kissing, but a poll taken, at that time, showed 14,600 to 704 in his favor. In 1987, Richard co-starred with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie, The Running Man, which with Richard played an egotistical game show host, Damon Killian, whom many say was a mirror image of himself at one time or another, during his real-life career. When Richard was 62, he hosted the third incarnation of, Family Feud, in 1994, but had only a short run. On the 6th of April, 1981, the Johnson family appeared on, Family Feud, and Richard was introduced to 27 year old Gretchen. They had a daughter, Shannon Nicole, in 1990, and were married in 1991. They are still married and reside in Beverly Hills, California.
Richard is semi-retired and his most recent Tv appearance was when he narrated, Tv's Funniest Gameshow Moments, on FOX, in early 2000. On Thanksgiving Day, November 23rd, 2000 he hosted a, Family Feud marathon which was filmed in 1995. Some people hear the name Richard Dawson, and may not know who you're talking about. But say his name followed by his famous quote in titled "Survey said," or mention "Newkirk" on, Hogan's Heroes, and they're sure to know who you're talking of.moreless

Prior to his death from cancer, Larry was a professor of Drama in Texas.moreless
  • John Banner

    Sgt. Hans Schultz

    9.3
Banner is best remembered for his portrayal of the Luftwaffe prison-camp guard Sergeant Schultz in the TV series "Hogan's Heroes" (1965.) There remains a certain irony: John Banner was Jewish. Another bit of irony, besides John Banner being Jewish and playing a guard in a POW camp is that like his co-star on Hogan's Heroes, Robert Clary, John Banner was in a concentration camp prior to his release and travel out of Nazi Occupied Germany. (In the early part of the Nazi control of Germany, a trip to a concentration camp was not an automatic death sentence.) John Banner was lucky to leave just before the Nazi policies changed. Mr. Banner passed away in his native Vienna on his 63rd Birthday.moreless
  • Robert Clary

    Cpl. Louis LeBeau

    9.1

Born in Wales, UK on May, 11th 1927 Bernard Fox, is most recognized for his role on Bewitched! as Dr. Bombay, the "witch" doctor. His trademark roles are usually of slightly bombastic, victorian, old monied and humorously pompous, and likeable Englishmen. Not quite on the upper rung of royalty, but perhaps a obsure Earl, Lord or faded English war hero. He has been married to his wife, Jacqueline since 1961.moreless
  • Sigrid Valdis

    Hilda

    10
A native Californian of Swedish descent, Sigrid Valdis (professional stage name of Patricia Crane) was raised in the Westwood - Brentwood suburbs of Los Angeles, and attended many exclusive private schools, including Marymount High School. Upon graduation, she moved to Europe, then to New York City to continue the modeling career she began as a teenager. While working as a designer's showroom and runway model, she met and married a businessman in the fashion industry. After the birth of her first child, Melissa, she began studying at Stella Adler's Theater School while at the same time working on her first feature film. Her natural talent and on-screen demeanor was impressive, and she found herself back in California in 1964 in pursuit of a promising acting career. Over the next eighteen months she would accumulate an impressive list of credits and on-camera time: Her first film, Two Tickets to Paris starring Joey Dee of Peppermint Twist fame, was followed by big screen roles in Marriage on the Rocks (alongside Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin), Our Man Flint (starring James Coburn and Lee J. Cobb), and The Venetian Affair (with Robert Vaughn). The exposure of the movies brought her a plethora of work in television and opportunities to work with TV legends such as Phil Silvers, Steve Allen, Red Skelton and Sid Caesar. She shared the small screen with the likes of Alan Sherman, Dennis Hopper, Henry Silva, Robert Conrad and Ross Martin. Her numerous credits include Kraft Theater, Arrest and Trial, The Wild Wild West, and The Mouse That Roared. She also performed on stage, most notably during the summer of 1968 when she toured with Bob Crane and Abby Daulton in the Broadway play Cactus Flower. In addition to the exposure and the opportunity to work with Hollywood's biggest names, Sigrid was becoming recognized for the ability to perform effectively in various types of roles in various genres and settings. She succeeded in movies and television, comedy and drama, commercials, sitcoms and skits, and was equally successful in both lead and supporting roles. Sadly, her first husband died in 1967, just a short time after she had begun to gain exposure on a weekly network television show. Sigrid Valdis caught the eye of Hogan's Heroes Producer Ed Feldman in 1965, leading to her guest appearance as Gretchen in Episode 10. When the second season began, Feldman brought her under contract as a regular cast member, playing the role of Hilda, Col. Klink's secretary. On October 16, 1970, Sigrid and Bob Crane were married on the set of Hogan's Heroes. At that time, theirs was the first reported "actual" marriage to be performed on a sound stage. A year later they had a son, Robert Scott Crane. Sigrid retired from acting following Scotty's birth so that she could devote herself to her husband and family. Although the Cranes were separated during part of 1977, they reconciled in 1978. However, Sigrid met with tragedy again a few months later when Crane was brutally murdered. In the midst of such excruciating circumstances, Sigrid moved from the Los Angeles area to protect her family from the constant media scrutiny invited by the case. Today she rarely makes public appearances or statements and is no longer involved with the entertainment industry. However, she remains proud of her family, her late husband, and her accomplishments not only on Hogan's Heroes but alongside some of Hollywood's greatest stars. Spouse: Bob Crane (16 October 1970-29 June 1978) (his death) 2 children. Trivia: Stepmother of Robert David Crane. Mother-in-law of Michelle Crane. Mother of Scott Crane.moreless
