I was shocked the other day to learn about the murder of Bob Crane.  Does anybody know why he was murdered?

There are many rumors surrounding the unsolved homicide, the leading one that a jealous husband was at fault.  (Crane was a notorious womanizer.)  Several suspects were questioned and released; another rumor is that Robert Clary was involved in the case, and defended by Attorney Werner Klemperer.

There was a movie in 2002 with Greg Kinnear called "Auto Focus".  You should watch it.  All about the real Bob Crane.

if you research it correctly, although the movie "tried" to protray crane, he wasn't like THAT in the movie and indeed, his widow (r.i.p.) and son tried to spread the word that the movie was false. =^_^=

Where in the world did you hear that?

I remember the day it happened, June 28, 1978. It was a big local story in the Phoenix media, and made national headlines as well. He apeared on a local TV talk show while he was visiting, and I was watching it.

That Crane was a womanizer is a matter of record. That's not to pass judgment, and I pray for his soul. Anyway, In the early 1990s the Maricopa County Attorney decided it was time to bring John Henry Carpenter to trial. He was portrayed in the movie by Willem Dafoe. However, he was aquitted, due to lack of evidence. Many still consider him the prime suspect, but we may never know for sure.

...Obviously dougalderman is trying to be funny, you can't possibly think he's being serious. Anyway, speaking of Robert Clary...According to a Hogan fan site, Clary was busted in a type of men's room gay group thing. The site I read it on has the news article describing the embarrassing situation. I can't think of the site's name at the moment but will be glad to find it if anyone requests, but if you google "hogan's heroes fansites" it is the main one to appear. I don't mean to denegrate Mr. Clary, but I thought I'd throw in one bit of true trivia to offset dougaderman's joke rumour. Also, has anyone listened to Mr. Clary's commentary on the episode where they go to France to have a painting copied? Is it just me or does he crab and moan a lot, albeit in a jokey offhanded way, about everyone's performances? He says stuff like, "If I did that scene now, it would be better.", or referring to John Banner: "I used to go up to him and joke that his performance was terrible.", etc.,...I'm thinking ol' LeBeau must have been a barrel of laughs to work with. Too bad there are not many surviving cast members to dish on each other. ...Oh well, sorry for being off topic. Just thought I'd chime in.

I assumed it was a joke, but even if there really were a rumor to that effect, I've heard stranger ones.

The DVD for Auto Focus has special features that include a documentary on Crane's murder. If I remember correctly, some jurors thought he was probably guilty, but couldn't vote to convict because there just wasn't enough physical evidence against him. They didn't know about DNA in 1978.

Indeed I poked a bit of fun at the case's bungled investigation. It should be pointed out, though, if it hasn't been already, that Klemperer did indeed defend Robert Clary in a case after Crane's murder about which I can find no details. Apparently the relationships gained during "Hogan's Heroes" didn't all die with Crane.
