    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    FILTER BY TYPE

    • TRIVIA (1)

      • At the SS ammunition depot is a sign reading HOCHE SPRENGGEFAHR, which is supposed to mean "high risk of explosion". But the correct spelling should be HOHE instead of HOCHE, as the German adjective "hoch" is irregular.

    • QUOTES (5)

      • Klink: This whole evening could become quite a diversion!
Hogan: You took the words right out of my mouth.

      • (Hogan brings the blank grenade back to Deutsch)
Deutsch: How did you know it was a blank?
Hogan: Easy. If it were a live grenade, you would've been the first to run. You see, both you and I know you're not a member of a super race.
Deutsch: After our war games, I shall teach you respect for the SS.
        Hogan: I doubt it.

      • Klink: Colonel Hogan: causing such trouble on my birthday... I don't think that's very nice.
Hogan: You know, sometimes I just hate myself.

      • Kinchloe: Colonel Hogan, you're a genius. A diabolical genius!
Hogan: In school, I was voted the 'Most Likely to Be a Troublemaker.'

      • (a regiment of SS arrive at camp)
Kinchloe: What would they be doin' here?
Hogan: Maybe they came to capture us again. Very thorough, the Germans.

    • NOTES (5)

    • ALLUSIONS (2)

      • LeBeau mentions "ring around the rosie" when Schultz interrupts the POWs gathered in a circle.

This alludes to a children's game (likely gleaned from an 1881 Mother Goose nursery rhyme) where children dance in a circle.

      • Hogan refers to live ammunition as "the real McCoy."

This term, thought to have originated in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, has become an acceptable way of describing 'the real article' or 'the real thing.'
