An Underground contact is captured by Schultz and his contraband hidden by the prisoners. Among his loot, a pistol thrown on top of Klink's headquarters, which, when retrieved by LeBeau, inadvertently shoots into Klink's office. Hogan turns this into the means to complete his mission.

The POW leader convinces the Kommandant that the errant shot was intended to kill the latter, and that a mysterious "Mr. X" remains at the camp intent on offing the Luft Colonel. This leads to a display of Klink's inherent cowardice, which ultimately convinces him to allow Hogan to dress as the Kommandant and draw the fire of the fictitious would-be killer.

Hogan uses his new power to effect the escape of the Underground agent with the secret papers he was employed to retrieve.moreless
