Holly is a basketball fanatic. With a father often pursuing his scientific research in far corners of the globe and a mother absorbed in event management, basketball is her anchor. Holly has her heart set on reaching the elite level of the game and using the sport to see the world.
In New Zealand, Holly was on the way to reaching her ambitions. On the brink of making the cut for the National Junior Basketball squad's training camp and rising to the next competition level, Holly was hit with a hard foul - The McKenzies were moving to Woolich, a rural seaside town in Australia.
True to her "never give in spirit" Holly took the move as an unfortunate but temporary set-back; particularly after she discovered that Woolich was home to the Rams, one of the best regional basketball teams in Australia.
Things don't go quite so smoothly for Holly when her first impressions on the locals at Woolich High go awry. Somehow her natural enthusiasm and style fails to impress the existing members of the Rams team - Joel Peterson, Trish Jenkins and Eleanor Scubinski - and she fails selection for the team.
But nothing keeps Holly down for long, and with a lot of smooth talking and Kiwi ingenuity, she causes a stir by creating her own rival team.
There's Ralph Owen - great skills but a mess when the heat is turned up; Johnno Walsh - light and easy and with quips and financial plans a plenty; Franco Galluzo - dependable, but a little shy around girls; Emily Walsh - Johnno's devoted sister who studies ballet; and wild card Nick Fraser - the Rams' and town enemy No 1. There's also Jacinta Peterson - a quiet girl who loves mathematics and chess, who quickly becomes Holly's closest friend. Together they form the Outlaws and set out to put the Rams in their place.
Holly's Heroes traces a year in the life of 14-year-old Holly, and celebrates the importance of friendship, belonging, and the rewards that come from participation and a simple love of sport.
Holly and her new-found friends face situations that test their self-confidence, self-esteem and their own abilities. By working together they are able to rise and meet these challenges. It's not going to be easy but one thing is certain - Holly is going to continue to improve her game, whatever it takes.
