It was basiaclly just a running gag that they started at the beginning. I think it was because Tim's neibhor, when he was a kid, was weird and he could never see his face. Origionally, it was sopposed to be Wilson's whole face covered, but they changed that.

They have done some good ways of covering his face though.

actually his face was always hidden because of a scar. Earl hindman had a scar on the left side of his face that he did not want shown to the public. his face was finally revealed on the last episode at the end when the cast is presented.

That's not true earthangel, the whole reason behind him not showing his face was Tim Allen's idea. When Tim was a kid he had a neighbor with a fence, and when he was little he could never see his entire face, just the top half.

It's at www.hiarchive.co.uk under FAQ's if you dont believe me. (it's a really good Home Improvement site too, check it out)

One of my favorite face-covering gags is when Wilson walks in the house with a Doctor's mask because he is about to deliver a baby.

um no, your wrong, you two can believe what you want but your very wrong..just please go to this site..www.hiarchive.co.uk... and look at the FAQ. Thats so dumb about the scar, there's no way in hel* that is true. First off, he wouldnt get the job if that was the case and theres pictures of him in public without his face being covered and I saw no scars. Here's some proof..

    Thats weird, no scars!?!?!

    no scars again http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/hiddenfall/EarlHindman.jpg

    http://www.serienjunkies.de/news/5de076db.jpg
    and again...

well you dont even hafta go to that site, this is what it says..

Why does Wilson never show his face?

This is based upon Tim (Tim Taylor) Allen's recollection of not being able to see his own neighbor when he was a boy as he was too short to see over the fence. It added an air of mystery to his neighbor, which was felt to be appropiate for the Wilson character. So Wilson's face is always partly obscured. It also gives the cast and crew a challenge in finding a new and unusual way to hide Wilson's face each episode.

if earl hindman cared so much then how come in the episode "Crazy For You" (halloween ep) Wilson is wearing a Phantom of the Opera mask which covered the TOP half of his face and left the BOTTOM half exposed?!?! How come nowhere on the internet there is no mention of him having scars. how come in any of his prior movies there are no scars, how come everyone at the hiarchive site, including the administrator, (who all know A LOT more about the show then you)tell me your scar theory is false. I'm sorry if I sound rude, but I hate when someone says I'm wrong when I'm right.
So I know you're gonna tell me to watch the last episode again and I admit I haven't seen it in awhile but the people at that website have, many times, some of them have every episode and would definitely know about that, especially the administrator...so go ahead to that site and into the message board and try to prove them wrong cuz they will.

oh ya, some more earl hindman pictures with the cast, without a scar! what a surprise!! http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Set/8441/face.html

and heres someone who saw the last episode:

"In the final episode, when all the cast runs through the house for the audience, Wilson smiles and slaps his cheeks to emphasise his face. There is no evidence of a scar or mark then. After that, in the half hour special features episode, where all the cast are interviewed about the show, Tim says, (not exact words) "I think it was a shame to hide his face. He had a very delicate filtrum, and in the right light it was very attractive."

alright, I'm done proving you wrong..

no you haven't proven me wrong, show me a picture of him with a scar and I will believe you...but you won't cuz he doesnt, so I'm right.

are u ever gonna try to disprove me, i mean i keep showing u these pictures of him without his face covered, I told you about the episode where the bottom half of his face is revealed, ur just being an idiot I guess..and 10 people have replied to my message in that forum and they all have no idea what ur talking about and think your an idiot as well.
