  • Christmas Review #77

Tim competes in the neighborhood Christmas light competition. Mark writes his Christmas list to Santa, but Brad and Randy tell him Santa is dead. I thought that this was an excellent Christmas episode of "Home Improvement". The storyline was very good and there was a ton of humor that really made me laugh. Only thing that did lower my score a tiny bit low was Brad and Randy telling Mark that Santa Claus is dead. Surprisingly, it didn't bug me enough to give it a 9 but it did bug me just a tiny bit so that's why it's a 9.5 but yeah, I enjoyed this episode very much. There were a lot of parts that made me laugh very hard but the part that made me laugh the hardest was when Wilson dressed as Santa Claus (at least you think it's Wilson) gave Brad a rubber band and Randy a button and the look on their faces when they got that as their Christmas present was funny as well. It was also wonderful that Wilson being dressed up as Santa Claus was actually the REAL Santa Claus while the REAL Wilson was just in his yard. Overall, an excellent Christmas episode of "Home Improvement" with tons of humor. 9.5/10moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • Goof: When Wilson tells Tim that St. Nick died in the year 342, but St. Nick actually died in the year 343.

    • In this episode, Al replaces his trademark phrase, "I don't think so, Tim," with, "I really doubt that, Tim." His tone of voice, however, stays the same.

  • QUOTES (9)

    • Brad: Anything for us, Santa?
Santa: Well, even though you boys no longer believe in me, Santa brought you a gift anyway. Brad, I've got you a rubber band, and Randy, here's a button.

    • Jill: Randy's no longer playing the innkeeper, because he added some lines.
Brad: Yeah. He doubled the price of the room and asked the wise men for ID!
Randy: They made me a sheep.

    • Mark: How does Santa fit gifts for everyone in the world in one bag?
      Tim: Jill?
Jill: Well, honey, he folds them.
      Mark: Folds them?
Tim: Yeah, he folds them. Then he has Mrs. Claus sit on the bag so he can tie it shut.
      Mark: That doesn't sound right...

    • Randy: Okay, fine, here's the truth. There used to be a Santa Claus, but he died six years ago.
Brad: Yep. You just missed out.
      Mark: Santa Claus isn't dead.
Randy: Yes, he is. He had a terrible accident with one of his reindeer. Blitzen fell on him.
      Mark: He's really dead?
      Brad: Kicked the bucket.
      Randy: Bought the dirt farm.
      Brad: Six feet under.
      Randy: Pushing up the daisies.
      Brad: Deader than a doornail.
      Randy: Stiff as a board.
      Brad: Cold as ice!

    • Mark: Santa's got to be alive, because you and Dad wouldn't lie to me. Thanks! (leaves)
Tim: We just lied to him.
Jill: He's our last baby. I wanted him to have one more magical Christmas.

    • Jill: I think we need to talk to you about Santa.
      Mark: Is he dead again?

    • Mark: So Santa is alive?
Jill: Sure, you sat on his lap at the mall.
Mark: But there are a lot of malls. How could Santa be at every one?
Tim: He's really fast for a fat guy!

    • Randy (about Brad): He was trying out for one of the Wise Men, and he said they were carrying gold and Frankenstein!

    • Jill: Just don't set fire to the roof like you did last year.
Tim: I didn't set a fire, that was an electrical short.

  • NOTES (1)

    • This is the first time the retired proctologist Doc Johnson was mentioned. Every Christmas, Tim tries to beat out Doc Johnson in the neighborhood Christmas light contest. Doc Johnson was never seen during the series.

    • The name of this episode is Yule Better Watch Out. Ironically, actress Patricia Richardson (Jill Taylor) had a role in a similarly titled film from 1980, You Better Watch Out.

    • Wilson: "There are more things on heaven and earth," good neighbor, "than are dreamt of in your philosophy."

Wilson quotes some well-known lines from Shakespeare's Hamlet.

    • Title: Reference to the line "You better watch out" in the song "Santa Claus is coming to town."
