  • Keeps me laughing

    10
As a child growing up watching monday-thusdays in the 2003, there was one show in particular that was so funny when it first came on that I almost laughed my head off and had my laughing and crying tears at the same time. Home Movies was one such show. Believe me, it was just that funny. Brendon Samll was a one man riot as the voice of the main-charater. There was always a sight gag or a slight hence of smart aleck dialogue that made that cartoon flow(even though it ran for eight minutes). You'll never know what that baby Josie would do next to get Brendon to look bad, but he was always unpredictable in achieving that task. It was on the same level as "Mucha Lucha" & "The Cramp Twins", but in turn was one of the funniest and sometimes hilarious cartoon ever devised for weekdays.

If you're a fan of Brendon Small, you'll don't want to miss any of this show. See it on [Adult Swim].
  • A simple show about a young boy who makes movies with his two friends.

    9.4
One of the first shows I remember coming on Adult Swim, is Home Movies. This program is one of my favorites. Home Movies is about a kid, Brendon Small, who enjoys making movies with his best friends, Melissa and Jason. Brendon lives with his divorced mother and adopted baby sister.

There really isn't a plot throughout the series; it's just episodic events. The animation can be considered crude, but I don't really mind that. I'm just glad they stopped using the Squiggle-vision in later seasons. Despite that the show is on Adult Swim, most of the content actually isn't as objectable as the other programs. There are a few episodes with bad language and off-screen nudity, but that's just about it. The comedy tends to be simple, but I still enjoy it.
  • Oh Dear Ted, Why Death? Why?

    7.5
The First Show To Permire Adult Swim, Home Movies Is About 8 Year Old Brendon Small And His Friends, Melissa Robbins, And Jason Penolious, Make All Kinds Of Movies Within Their Trusty Camera Of Their Happiness. All Sorts Of Hoots n' Hijinks Always Get Brendon In Troble, But Within Help From Coach McGurick, Their Drunk & Loud Coach, Can Help Brendon And His Friends.

I Wish Family Guy And Furtrama Never Permired On The Network, Because According To Other Fans, They Were The Reason Why The Show Was Cancled. Because As It Seems, Fans Turned Off The TV After Said Shows Came On. If It Weren't For Them, I Would Place A Bomb At TBS.
  • Wonderfully Creative, Clever, and Playful. More than just a few laughs.

    7.3
This shows charm is unique and sincere. Each quirky little episode presents itself with a childlike playfulness. Home Movies, pokes fun at everyday life and social mishaps. The characters each have there own hang-ups, but filled with very relatable human qualities, including there own off centered sense of humor. The voices are incredibly well done and highly expressive. It’s very easy to pick up on the personalities and moods of each character just by listening to what they say. The animation style is also original, done in a very carefree abstract sort of way. Very little attention to detail keeps things focused on the story and dialogue, which is where the entertainment value is the strongest. You will learn to love this lighthearted innocent show after just a few episodes. Comedy like this is often under appreciated, and writing this kind of dialogue, and the improv on the part of the actors, is fantastic. It proves to be a show that teens and adults will enjoy as well as kids, because there are often adult issues that get tangled up in the adventures of the young main character Brendon Small, in fact most of the show is about how children and adults react to each other and share very similar qualities, proving that they can learn allot from each other. Best of all it will keep you laughing until the very end.
  • This show is real, but the animatoin kinda bugs me...(twitch)(twitch)

    8.6
I love this hsow the stories and the way the characters interact and the way the stories are about real life problems and not about robots, ninjas or explosioins it is too bad it was canncelled this show was cool. The animatoin bugged the crap outta me, but i got over it. the jokes are FUNNY AS HELL. sometimes the show slows down and is kinda boring, but then in a flash some random stuff happens and you luagh. Brendon (the creator of the show and the name of the mian character) he is a visonary and his show was great i just hope one day this show airs agian so i can see some real life stories and not fictonal aleins or robots destroying earth i just wanna see a show about a kid and his freinds making movies.
  • 9.5/10

    9.5
Really funny show. Brendon Small is the main character. He goes around making movies with his two friends Jason and Melissa. They all really suck, but there suck so much, there funny. Jason is really weird. He's always saying really stupid things. Melissa is the smart one. She is the one that always has good idea's and stuff. Brendon's mom is Paula. She's just an average mom. Brendan, Jason and Melissa have this really stupid soccer coach. He's always telling them to do stupid things, and the rarely ever play soccer. He is always trying to get a date with his old friends. Brendon's other friends that sometimes start in his movies are Fenton, (really mean and spoiled) Walter and Perry, (really funny and kinda gay They all make the show a little bit better. My only complaint is that in the first couple seasons they made the people do this "squiggly" thing. Other than that, really good and funny show.
  • Too bad this show was cancelled.

    10
Why did this show get cancelled? This show is about a young filmmaker Brendan and hid two friends, Melissa and Jason. At first, I thought this was stupid. But, after watching it, I changed my mind! This show is funny, innovative, and definatly original! However, for the better, the show got more idiotic(like Venture Bros.), which is not a problem for me. All the DVD's are out and range from 20 to 30 dollars. If you like fuuny, idiotic shows with a good plot, I highly reccomend buying a DVD if you have the money or watch it on demand, as it rarely airs on [adult swim] anymore.
  • What a glorious run!!!

Home Movies may be one of the greatest animated shows of all time. Even though it was originally known for it\'s use of the very outdated squigglevision, Home Movies still contained a certain charisma that appealed to the likes of many (including myself). The humor could be considered random or dry. Film is a vital part of Home Movies obviously because Brendon is director but also shows that at times he could be a visionary even though his actors were all too strange. Jason and Melissa also contribute large amounts of humor to this off-beat story of friendship. Coach McGuirk may be the greatest character to every grace the silver screen with his wild drunken antics and presumptuous attitude. Walter and Perry are infatuated with eachother and proclaim their love in an annoying fashion. Paula is Brendon\'s mother and a single parent who has gotten into her share of trouble and Josie is the understated baby sister of Brendon. This show was terrific and unfortunately taken off the air like many other brilliant shows (Dead Like Me, for example) but it still lives on through the hearts of it\'s many fans who including myself would love for it to come back (if possible)!
  • Easily one of the top 2 best shows ever on Cartoon Network.

    10
Home Movies was special in a lot of ways, not least amongst these was their use of "retroscripting". Retroscripting was first used for Dr. Katz (an earlier production of Soup2Nuts), in which, essentially, you just take a general idea for a story and let the actors bounce off of each other in front of microphones, and then edit it down into the pure comedy gold that one mines from raw material.

Of course, a high-caliber of talent is implicit in the success of this format, and luckily, Home movies had it in spades. The music, the movies, the dialogue, the guest stars, every inch of this show is what is good about television. It's sad that it has shuffled loose this mortal TV coil, but we'll always have DVD.
  • I like the show i don't love it but its a good show it has its good parts and bad parts. Overall a good show.

    9.4
A show that is good but not great. I like it but not one of my favorite shows. It is a show that should make a few seasons then should call it quits. Some of the episodes make me laugh tho. Some can be crappy to. The animatics aren't great but it doesn't have to be. My friends hate the show but i kindy like it. And im brutelly honest too. So i guess its a pretty good show. Overall the show has its flaws but it has its good moments. I might add it to my favorites but i might not.

Home Movies premiered on UPN on April 26, 1999 but was pulled from that network after five episodes. The completed episodes were picked up by Canadian broadcaster YTV for their short-lived Limbo block, and aired for a short period of time. It returned to American TV two years later on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim late-night lineup due to a fanbase within Cartoon Network's executive branch, including Khaki Jones. It became of one Adult Swim's most popular shows.

The brain trust behind this show is Soup2Nuts (formerly Tom Snyder Productions), the same people who created Comedy Central's defunct animated series Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist. Many members of the cast and crew of Dr. Katz were involved with Home Movies, such as stars Jonathan Katz and H. Jon Benjamin, then assistant/talent co-ordinator Melissa Bardin Galsky, writer Bill Braudis, and producer/audio editor Loren Bouchard.

It aired on CN as part of its Adult Swim block in the United States and in Canada on Teletoon as part of The Detour block. The show was cancelled by CN in April 2004

  • An incredibly witty, albeit low key show which was definitely ahead of its time.

    9.4
Home movies is a great show. The writing is excellent, the characters all have a ton of personality, and the situations they get themselves into are usually very entertaining. This cartoon takes a unique approach in presentation. Brendan, the main character, is unique in the fact that he's an 8 year old kid with the mind of a person in their mid 20s, for the most part. He points out the flaws with pinpoint accuracy in his classmates as well as those in his mom, coach, and various other adult characters. His movies are often hilarious spoofs on movies of yesteryear, as well as more current ones. It might not be as fast paced as some other adult cartoons, but the wit alone should hook you for some time. I recommend you watch it.
  • Home Movies is about an 8 yrs. old boy named Brendon (after show creator)who makes home movies with his best friends Jason & Melissa. The show had a array of characters and dealt with certain issues, without ever getting heavy. It was smart, amazing, & un

Home Movies made the long, ardious trek from UPN over to a then fledgling block of adult orriented animation, named Adult Swim. Adult Swim was a hit, thus making Home Movies a hit, but Home Movies was later treated like a fire starting stepchild. The show, about talented & too smart for their own good 8yrs. olds and a 7 yrs. old, centered around the life of Brendon Small, his mother Paula, his best friends Melissa & Jason, and his soccer coach John McGuirk. This show was one of the best animated shows ever to be on television. The wit was on point, and once they stopped using Squigglevision, so was the animation. This show was about kids, but for adults, which made it something special. They kept you interested with ad-libbed dialogue and situations that didn't really make that much sense until the end. This show is supposedly a cult hit, but isn't almost ever great show, axed before its time a cult hit? Adult Swim should be kicking themselves for canceling this show, because now their loyal viewers who have been there from the beginning & have stuck around, are stuck with Perfect hair forever & the same recycled (not that great the first time around) episodes of Futurama. I love this show. Its one of my favorites, but then again, so are Firefly & Arrested Development, shouldn't that say something?
  • this show is like heroin, as soon as you get a little your wanting more and more.

The show is about a little kid named brendon smalls, who owns a camera and has high hopes and big dreams of being a professional director. Along with the help of his friends he turned into actors, and from time and again he star’s and directes movies pulling off more than one task. Getting life tips from his soccer coach [coach Mcguirk], who has been around the block a few too many times. and has a wounderful cast of supporting characters including a teen age musician named Dwyane who time fro time will provide the music for his movies.

this show is a snorefest. it has sum funny parts that provide sum gewd laffs but all in all, its jus not that great!

the main character and his friends make movies but there mom has like no job so i think that if i were him, i'd actually worry bout my life instead of my low-budget movies nobody watches.

    8.5
If I was not being objective, I'd give this show a 9.5. However, while this is a personal favourite, I recognize this show is not perfect. It could be said that most of the humour can only be appreciated by a niche audience. Much of the humour comes from understanding characters and character relationships, so it will be best appreciated by an audience that watches the show consistently. For those who can appreciate it, there is something special about this show. Coach McGuirk is humourously irresponsible, and is a personal favourite character. Additionally, the friendship between Brendon, Melissa, and Jason, gives the show a great dynamic.

As a kid, I too liked to experiment with making home movies, but you don't have to have been an amateur filmmaker to appreciate this show. The show’s writing is clever, and many episodes can be appreciated on repeated viewings. The animation is beautiful, well, after the first season anyways-post squigglevision. The show deals with mature themes and its humour can be appreciated by both children and adults. While the show is capable of delivering a home run episode, it also delivers the odd dull episode now and again. Not a perfect series, but it certainly deserved more than a four season run. The creative minds behind the show have an imaginative and unique sense of humour.

A good series that was cancelled before its time.

  • One of the funniest shows ever.

    10
Sure the first episodes were in that horrible squiggle vision but the show was still funny as hell. With classic moments such as Coach McGurk chopping his way through a door to a spaghetti dinner with his newly bought swords, to Brendon's first encounter with Shannon. Thank goodness again for Adult Swim putting this show on its InDemand service.
  • Side-splittingly funny!

    10
Many people believed that the end of the squiggle vision ruined the show. I personally think it got better.

I've slowly been converting members of my family into Home Moivies fans. Even my mother, who's completely not into "stupid" shows found herself joining me when I watched it, and asking what mess Coach McGuirk had gotten himself into. I'm thrilled that it's available on DVD now, though I have yet to buy Season 2.
  • Easily the best show in of all time. Simply perfect!

    10
This has got to be, the funniest, coolest, most perfectly god-like show ever!! This is the best show on the face of the earth and you have got to see it!!!!!!!! It is soooooooooo good!! I cannot even begin to describe it\'s perfectitude! By the Second Season today!! (Third season comes out November 15th!)
  • The Best Animated Show Ever!!

    10
I just bought the second season DVD and I watched everything on it in a day! This show was/is the best thing on Adult Swim and I cannot believe it is no longer being made. Thank god that Adult Swim saved the show after the first season or we'd only have one season of this great show. The show has all the qualities of a good sitcom, except its animated! Great characters, great storylines and of course its hilarious. Though the look of the show changed after the first season, after they stopped using the "squigglevision" technique of animation, the show kept just as strong till the end. Home Movies we all miss you.
  • I miss Home Movie's!!

    9.9
What an awesome and witty show! I miss watching it on TV. Melissa, Brendon and Jason are best friends that LOVE movies. They enjoy making movies in brendon's basement. They are 2nd graders who are filled with sarcasm and laughter. You will laugh and pee in your pants if you watch this show.
  • A show so soaked in sarcasm it hurt...

    10
Funny is good. Funny with music is better. NMow, this show didn't revolve around music, not by any means (it revolved around movies) but, as with most musicians, it was impossible for Brendon Small to make this show without infusing music into it. And that's one of my favorite things about this TV show. The show is great, any of these reviews will tell you that, but the music is easily the best use of music in a TV show that I know of. Not just the funny Kafka themed rock operas, but all of it. From the theme, to the wonderful instrumental tracks use to convey the sparse moments of raw emotion.

This show rocks. Both literally, and figurativly.
  • I've become addicted and preach the virtues of Home Movies to others.

    9.7
One need not be warped of mind to appreciate Home Movies but it helps. The children portrayed may be eight years old but no eight-year old will get it. I've even gotten used to squigglevision. And yes, Walter and Perry are gay. The development of the characters over the various seasons is slight, in my opinion, but to me that just means that every episode is (almost) just as enjoyable as any other. A brilliant programme.
  • A very true and original cartoon with lovable characters and memorable story plots.

    10
Like south park Home Movies is an Adult Show surrounded by Kids. This show is about 3 kids Brendon Jason and Melissa make home movies. Hence The Title Name. They make movies of all kinds. Action, Drama, Romance, Suspense the whole 9 yards. They can end up in any situation. For Example Class Trip. Brendon's class is visiting a hotel and he uses this as a chance to finish his movie the Queen of Diamonds. So the kids are sneaking all over this hotel. That is a very nice story line that keeps the crowd going. All episodes have a nice plot with a very good ending. Mainly the series ender. It was a sad series ender but it was nice of how they actually did the ending when Brendon drops his camera out of a car obviously being a metaphor for the end of the show because without the camera then the show would have never existed in the first place. But while I'm writing this show I'm crying because the show ended so suddenley. With only having 52 episodes and four seasons to split them into. When you watch Home Movies you always wish and think you were there and that is why they loved the show so much.Home Movies April 26th 1999-April 4th 2004. I love you Home Movies and always will.
  • Very Funny Show!

    10
When I first watched this show I almost died laughing even more at Jason when he talks about what he has make it nose bleeds, put somthing in his ear, or cradle tap and when he picks it it bleeds. The voices, situations, and dialog it just absolute funny. I think this show should come back becuase I think it can go on for alot longer and will stay popular if the creator sticks to what he orginaly did.
  • Why watch movies when I can watch Home Movies.

    9.2
This better every season show portrays the lives of three young kids living their lives. But get this, they are in the movie making buisness. Not the real one but they simply make random movies for no apparent reason, thinking of getting a big break. These kids are obsessed with making these films but everyday life. At the first season, the drawing and stories weren't that good but in later seasons they get better. Also the main character Brendonlives his life in a home with his mother because his parents are divorced, but still maintains a constant relationship with both parents. Believe it or not, this show contains mature humour and should not be viewed by little kids.
  • Best friends Brendon, Jason and Melissa spend all their free time creating movies to fill the void in their lives created by the lack of functiong parental figures who are often more screwed up than the kids themselves. This show is one of the wittiest an

    10
It is hard to put into words exactly how brilliant this show is. It is unlike any other animated series on the air now or in the past. The show revolves around Brendon Small (incidentally the same name as co-creator, writer and voice actor Brendon Small), his divorced mother Paula and adopted sister Josie, best friends Jason and Melissa with whom he makes the home movies, and soccer coach and incompetent father figure John McGuirk. Divorce and broken homes are two of the major themes running throughout the show, where the kids often times run the place and the parents are struggling just to survive in this crazy world. Brendon, Jason and Melissa are hilariously funny and make what some would call "Ed Woodian" films that are so bad you cannot help but laugh. However, you probably won't find yourself laughing out loud, the humor in Home Movies is much subtler and very clever. I find myself rewatching episodes 4 or 5 times before I catch every joke made. This makes the rewatchability of the show much higher than an average animated series. Season one is animated in Squigglevision, in the same manner as Dr. Katz (who actually plays Erik, Melissa's divorced father), while following seasons were created in flash. Most of the first season was improvised, which makes the comedy 100 times more appreciated as these comedians keep you in stiches most of the show. I highly recommend Home Movies to anyone who appreciates their comedy with a side of wit and intelligent humor.
  • This was a creative subliminal kind of cartoon!

    10
This cartoon needs to be re-released because of its subliminal humor! I'm a fan of cartoons that make you say, "I know he didn't just say that" or make me want to use the Tivo to rewind it and this show certainly fits that category. Clever punch lines and dialog make this one of my favorite Adult Swim programs!
  • This show is badly drawn but funny as hell.

    8.8
This show is funny and sometimes off-the-wall its poorly drawn but I've seen worse.I have only seen two episodes but enjoyed them both but didnt really enjoy the drawing, but who cares its funny.I liked the episode where Coach stayed up ten nights straight and went to the sleep center that was so funny.I defenitely think it should be showed more especially on Cartoon Network.

When i first heard of this show i figured it would be stupid so I am going to buy the DVD and seee how I like season 3.
  • Home Movies is an original show about third graders having fantastic, wonderful, sweet dialog.

    9.0
I have just recently been introduced to Home Movies and I absolutly love it. Brendon Smalls is a third grader who love to make short films about the most random things. There are two reasons I love this show. The first is that I LOVE the dialog the characters have in this show. The humor is very dry but it is wonderful. I also like this series because it brings back many memories of my early high school days were my friends and I made our own short films. I wish this was a series that was still being produced but the few episodes that have been made are pure gold. I highly advise all animation fans to check out Home Movies.
