Cox: I'm a doctor of sorts and where I work I see death every day. I see people reduced to pieces of flesh and bone, body parts slabs of meat. And yet somehow I'm able to do my job without thinking about what's in front of me. I daydream. Usually about my father. I remember him in the backyard, watering his vegetable garden and then suddenly what I'm doing will come into focus and I'll realise that this, this dead body in front of me used to be someone just like my father. Maybe our brains know what we need to do in order to survive. If we can allow ourselves to understand that we're not our bodies. We are not that part of us that dies. Widmer: You're the woman from the morgue. When I went to see Jack. Cox: Yeah. Widmer: You were very kind to me. You know you two are funny. I'm all alone now. I have no one but you, you've lost a child but you still have your wife. And you, your wife is gone but you still have your child. There's got to be some kind of peace in that. Silvio: There isn't. Mr. Rath: He's right, there isn't. Mrs. Rath: But we try don't we honey, we go on. Mr. Rath: Most nights we go out for dinner. We can't stand to be in the house. But sooner of later we have to go back but we can't sleep. You have to feel free to really sleep. And we're not free. We're trapped by this thing that happened to us and it won't let us go. Trapped. There's no escape.
Kellerman: Hey Frank, did you do the 24 hour report? Pembleton: Yes, it's done. Kellerman: Good, I just wanted to make sure. Pembleton: You know Mike, you can laugh at me or criticize me but please don't ever, ever condescend to me. Kellerman: Relax Frank. I mean come on we're in the same boat. Pembleton: You and I, we have nothing in common. Kellerman: What are you talking about. We're both stuck here in the squad room. We're both pissed off about it. I'd say we have something in common. Pembleton: You are accused of a crime. Not me. You. Kellerman: So I'm like a class below you, is that what you're saying? I'm dirty so because I'm accused of being dirty and you're clean because all that happened was that your brain frizzled and popped, huh? Screw you Frank. You know something you're not just arrogant, you're vain. You're like a pretty girl who never wants to show the bad side of her face. Pembleton: By the way I never said that you were dirty. Kellerman: Yeah, well you never said I wasn't either.
Pembleton: There's fresh coffee and if anyone needs me I'll be at my desk counting paper clips.
Jude Silvio: "I don't know what to say." Counselor: "You could start with your name." Jude Silvio: "Jude Silvio. My mother was a Beatles fan." Counselor: "I don't follow." Jude Silvio: "Hey Jude. Don't be afraid. Take a sad song yeahyeahyeahyeahyeah."
