Great pilot. Amazing acting by John Ritter. This was maybe one of his best roles as an actor. He had been typecast for all of his career as just a comedy actor but here he shows that he can do drama.

He plays Harry Hooperman, a single bachelor, who lives in a rundown apartment. The landlady in the apartment is murdered, and Harry is surprised to learn that she has left the apartment to him.

This is anything but a gift though. As stated the apartment is in terrible shape, Hooperman has almost no money of his own, and the tenants seem unaware of the real problems of the place only caring that their own needs be met.

John Ritter was the perfect for a role like this. I can't see too many actors doing this role with the sincerity and warmth that Ritter did.

Ritter really a great actor but the many comedy roles he did kind of overshadow his stretches into drama.

There's a lot of nice scenes in this show and in the pilot. Probably the scene that sticks out the most here is Harry visiting the room that the landlady died. He at first is very angry with her that she's left such a burden on him but then he starts crying realizing again that one of his close friends had died.moreless
