In this episode, we see both ends of Hornblower’s personality. On one hand he is as nervous as can be preparing for the Lieutenant’s exam, on the other hand we see him in charge of the supply ship. When he is at sea and in command he is at his best. Men who are much older than him and have more time at sea follow his commands easily as they recognize his natural authority. The civilian, Tapling, illustrates this best because he is not in the navy and immediately looks down on Horatio because of his age. When Horatio orders him around he is offended, but by the end of the journey he feels grateful for having had the opportunity to learn.moreless
