Horror in the East

Show Summary

Horror in the East is the BBC documentary series that looks at the actions of the Imperial Japanese Army in the time around World War II, which were often brutal and shocking. The show examines the attitudes of the Army, their refusal to surrender, and the attitudes the western world held towards the Japanese. Using archival footage, interviews with Japanese soldiers and Allied POWs, and historical experts, Horror in the East tells the complex story of relations with the eastern world at the time. Japan in the early 20th century had been enthusiastically adopting western values, but their monarchy was doing the opposite. They were taught that their emperor was a living god, and the Army used this to their advantage. The show examines their behavior after this shift in WWII, from their assault on Nanking to the brutal and shocking treatment of POWs in their camps.
