With the belief ultimately they could all be expendable things are reaching a critical mass for the Sanders. Ellen and Brian know even if they survive things simply can't go back to any sense of normalcy. Desperate times call for desperate measures and the Sanders have decided they must make a run across the border to Canada. With Duncan Carlisle freezing their assets, the GPS chips, and the constant vigil of being physically watched it won't be easy. Brian decides to act as a decoy while he convinces Ellen he can do whatever it takes to join the family. It's decided and GPS chips must go. By some creative chance-taking Ellen and the kids pull it off and are about to board their bus north when a cruel twist puts it all in jeopardy.
The above is the cliff notes version while the on-screen version played out with more twists and turns creating a formidable dark cloud of excellent tension. The events unfolding seemed what intelligent people in an extraordinary situation may be pushed into. Very little time was wasted creating a small light in a tunnel of dread. The final scene summed it all up. Something this big may have a huge cost. As the episode fades out Brian's sacrifice is called in to Ellen's phone in graphic detail: Brian is shot in the abdominal region by Carlisle and Ellen has to make a hard choice as to follow through and leave with her kids or return to attempt to save her husband. This ending had all the tension of a season finale, but thankfully we should have some resolution in seven more days. An excellent episode.
