Probably the best episode of Hot in Cleveland yet. All four of the main cast members. We know Wendie Malick can be funny but she had her best performance since appearing on this show here tonight, Jane Leeves had a few good lines, Betty White was Betty White, and even Valerie Bertinelli had me laughing a few times. It was this episode that showed me this series could be good, and people agreed with me as this was the first time the show actually went up in ratings from the previous week.

That being said, the show still has a long way to go. It is not THAT funny yet, and I fear it may never will be. The writers also have to stop going for so many cheap jokes all the time. That works for the Elka character, but with the others it comes off as lazy.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (0)

  • QUOTES (6)

    • Victoria (after Melanie drops her ring at the feet of a handsome guy): "She caught one by accident. Imagine if we aimed."

Betty White (catching Joy's ring that she threw over her shoulder hoping to hit a guy): "Desperate much?"

    • Victoria: Listen, fooling around with exes is a perfectly natural and often beautiful part of every relationship. I've slept with all of mine.
      Elka: Even the gay one?
Victoria: Yes, he was questioning his questioning of his sexuality, but as soon as we hit the sheets we got into a conversation about thread count, and well, game over!

    • (looking at Melanie's low-cut dress)
Elka: Nice girls keep their cookies in a jar.
Melanie: Yes, I know, but Jenna set me up with one of her friend's fathers and we're going out to dinner after.
Elka: Oh, well in that case, chips ahoy!

    • (talking to Victoria and Joy)
Elka: I've never been in a triangle before. You girls are slutty, what would you do?

    • Joy: (secretly watching Melanie break up with Anders from the kitchen door) What's happening now?
Victoria: She's making some sappy speech and he's overplaying it like crazy. It's like one of those warm moments on Glee.

    • Victoria: (to Joy) Why is everyone asking us for romantic advice?
Joy: Yea, since when did we become the gay best friend?

  • NOTES (1)

  • ALLUSIONS (3)

    • Victoria: And did I mention that the grandfather is aging backwards, like Brad Pitt?

This is an allusion to the 2008 movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, in which Brad Pitt's character is born with the appearance of an old man and gets younger as his life goes on.

    • Melanie: Sugar-foot, I always trip on that gosh-darn step!
Victoria: It's like a Mamet play in here!

This is a reference to David Mamet, an American playwright, and his writing which includes significant amounts of profanity

    • The episode title is a reference to the 2009 movie It's Complicated.
