    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    • TRIVIA (2)

      • Rebecca and Mark stay at the Hotel Cipriani in Venice. This is a five-star hotel on Giudecca Island, three minutes by water taxi from St Mark's Square.

      • When we first see the janitor mopping up somewhere in the bowels of the hotel, a mouse runs across in front of him.

    • QUOTES (6)

      • Charlie: I just wanted to tell you and everyone, actually, that Jackie and I are seeing each other.
Rebecca: Congratulations. No shagging in the rooms.

      • Anna: If you like someone, you like them. You can't fight chemistry, unless if they're poor, then you just have to.

      • Tony: (of Anna) What's wrong with her?
Charlie: She thinks one of the guests has murdered his wife.
Tony: Oh, nice. Maybe I should get him to do mine.
        Anna: I'm serious.
        Tony: So am I.

      • Charlie: Jagdeep, you're on security tonight?
Jagdeep: Worst bloody luck! Why do I get the night shift? I've been in this country ten years, make the bloody Poles work the nights!

      • Anna: Trying to get a man to have sex when he's tired is like trying to milk a bear. Just isn't worth it.

      • Anna: Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
        Charlie: Somehow, I doubt it.
Anna: What if Mrs Johnson's inside those suitcases?
Charlie: Oh. Well, then I'd say she's an incredibly supple lady.

    • ALLUSIONS (1)

      • There are several references in this episode to classic suspense films. The camera work moving down the hallways is very reminiscent of the The Shining when Danny is on his tricycle. There is also a rather stunning recreation of the bar scene where the bartender is talking to Jack Nicholson. In this case, it's Charlie acting as the bartender. The lighting is perfectly recreated in this scene. There is also an homage to Rear Window in that Anna believes that the guest's wife has been murdered and the body smuggled out in their luggage. Also, she is caught in the closet when the guest returns. In this episode, Charlie is on a walkie-talkie with Anna, whereas in the film, Jimmy Stewart was watching "the suspect" through binoculars while Grace Kelly was searching the man's apartment. Psycho is acknowledged not only with the blood in the tub, but also when Anna first sees the blood, the violins in the soundtrack do a short tribute to the famous music by Bernard Herrmann. One last rather obscure reference occurs in a scene with Anna. It was inspired by the film, Suspicion. We see Anna carrying some liquor on a tray up to a guest. The light hits the tray and makes it reflect. In Suspicion, Alfred Hitchcock rigged a light into a glass of milk so when Cary Grant was carrying it, the milk gave off an eerie glow.
