There's a new boss in town. Edward Vogler flashes $100 million and becomes the new Chairman of the Board at Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital -- quickly becoming the bane of Dr. Gregory House's existence.
The first of a five story arc which introduces Edward Vogler -- billionaire, successful entrepreneur and owner of, among other things, a pharmaceutical company. He donates $100 million to the Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital and now wants control of its operations by becoming its Chairman of the Board.
He immediately decides that treating patients isn't profitable but running clinical trials for research medication is and focuses on trimming the fat starting with Dr. House and his Department of Diagnostic Medicine.
House's patient is a successful CEO, a bulimic who cuts herself and ingests ipecac to induce vomitting. Repeated use of the medicine has led to muscle damage and destroyed her heart. She needs a transplant but her psychological condition would exclude her from consideration -- unless House lies to the transplant committee. He risks his career and lies through his teeth in order to secure the transplant -- simply because she is his patient.
Vogler finds out the truth and confronts House who says that while neither of them like each other and Vogler has the money, he's got tenure and can't be touched. And he also has Wilson and Cuddy on his side. Any vote to fire him must be unanimous. Vogler adds that while he may not be able to touch House now, he might be able to fire both Cuddy and Wilson, thereby leaving House vulnerable.
House gets a patient who needs a heart transplant, but she's bulimic and cuts herself; two reasons why she could be disqualified from getting a heart.
In the transplant committee meeting, Cuddy asked if there is any reason that Carly (the patient) should be disqualified. House went on about her medical conditions until Cuddy stressed if Carly has any psychological problem.
House looked around the room - at Wilson, at Vogler, then at Cuddy, and said "no".
It's heart-warming when Carly asked House why he lied and risked so much.
He simply said, "because you're my patient - don't screw it."
Cameron acted oddly when she calls everyone by their first names; "Robert" (Chase) and "Eric" (Foreman) House asked why was she manipulating everyone and she told him that no one likes her because she's a woman, pretty and not aggressive.
House told her that everyone likes her.
Then Cameron asked if he likes her, she needs to know.
House just said, "no".
That was funny.
Another funny part after Vogler confronted House; House turned his music back on but a different song comes out.
I'm sitticg here watching the FOX logo right now. It's been on the screen for at least 30 seconds. I wonder if they broke the tape... because that would suck. Or maybe they just ran out of sponsors.
Anyway, this is my favorite episode out of what I've seen so far. The way the new chairman sizes up House is great. "Wear the damn coat" has got to be one of the best lines from the show. House actually looked hurt after that one.
The whole lying about the transplant thing... just an overall great episode.
I liked the young businesswoman as a character, she provided us with a very different type of storyline. I was thinking House may be getting into some sort of relation ship, because at the end he seemed awefully kind to her. But of course, i was wrong.
The initial symptom was very cool, and it appeared very painful. The muscles (from what they looked like) tightened around each other with a very painful sounding noise. And when she was turned over in her bed clenching her leg and started screaming! That was sooo cool, she hit a 10 on the pain scale! I love that kind of stuff. Also, all House's fans instantly begin to hate Vogler, who hates House, who we all love. He actually posed as a very useful and tough adversary or enemy to House.
Money gets you everywhere. In this episode we see a rich, fat black guy who donated 100 million US dollars to the hospital, and in return expects a board on the chair of supervisors, or whatever.
Point is, at first I thought this was a kind man making a kind gesture, turns out he's one of those "from the ghetto" kids who went from nothing to everything, then lost their dad and now think they can get everything with their money.
Well, no go for the bro from the ghetto. House does not succumb to the terror of this fat man. I applaud you, Dr. House.
Then we see House in a very interesting position. Lie to the transplant board to save a patient, or be a 'good' doctor and tell the truth, and let the patient die. House lies. Is this because he is actually able to feel compassion or because he just really, really hates the big black man who now runs the show in town? I'm guessing the second, but judging from the way House acted to our bulemic friend the patient, there might actually be a tiny 2 feet tall guy within House who controls the Doc's human aspects.
Tiny guy, if you read this, you fail at what you're supposed to do.
Remember when Allison asked you whether you liked her, and expected a "yes", you acted like a complete ass and told her "No."? And not just a simple "No." but a "No." that hit her like a huge hammer on the head of a pig in a slaughterhouse.
I'm not too fond of this episode. I didn't like the character of Vogler and the case was pretty lame. Some rich guy donates 100 million dollars to a hospital hoping to make a profit with clinical trials but other then that treating patients isn't right.
The CEO of that company who was cutting herself and needed a heart transplant wasn't the best of their cases. It wasn't all that interesting she was just all about her job and wanting to get out of the hospital.
House lying to the transplant commity was just plan normal House but Chase ratting him out was a little Out of Character.
Not a great episode of House but a good one at the least.
There were several good moments in this episode, but overall it fell kind of flat.
Sarah Clarke still hasn't learned to act since her days as Nina Myers on "24". She's also the second cast member from "24" to appear as a patient on "House". I wonder who we'll get to see next?
Dr Cameron is just getting more and more annoying. Her behavior in this episode was extremely irritating, and I hope she'll cut it out soon. Her crush on House feels really out of place, and not the least bit believable. If they have to pair House up with someone, pair him up with Cuddy. He needs to be with someone who isn't afraid to stand up to him. Cameron would only be his little lap dog.
The storyline with the sick patient was okay and all, but I was really bothered with the way House lied to put her on the transplant list. For one he's doing wrong by the person who donated the heart (and his/her family members) by giving the heart to someone who shouldn't get it. For another he's sentenced someone else to death, someone who was an apt candidate. There's a reason why some people aren't a priority on the transplant list; it really bothered me to see a storyline where they basically say "well it's okay to lie if the person really wants to live". I'm willing to bet the person who was a better candidate for the heart really wanted to live as well.
I'm not all that big on the new storyline with the principal from Boston Public. The only interesting thing about it is to see how far House would be willing to go to keep Cuddy and Wilson safe. My guess is not very far for Cuddy, but possibly long enough for Wilson.
I think the best part of the episode was House digging to the theme song from "CSI: NY".
It seems some people didn't really like this episode as much, but I thought this was a pretty good episode, not the best though. I just liked how House really helped the woman, and lying for her and risking his medical license, although lying is just usual House. I really hate the new chairman Vogler, just because he donated a lot of money he thinks that he runs the place, and trying to get Cuddy to tell House what to do. The confrontation at the end between House and Vogler was great, but Chase telling on House was unexpected.
I thought this was a good bounce back episode from some of the last ones we have seen. I thought the scene between Cameron and Houser was veyr good - though I beg one time that he will actually say yes to the poor girl. Out of everyone who wants approval, shes the one that wants it the most. I thought the personal connection between House and the patient was a nice change it up for this episode. Putting his licence on the line to help a patient who was as emotional sick as she was physically was cool. As far as the "new chairman of the board" goes, I dont think we should see much more of him. I hope he was just a one to two episode drama for House, he doesnt seem like all that interesting of a character
A woman is admitted into the hospital that had musle problems in her leg. In the end, it turned out that she needed a heart transplant because she's a belemic (please excuse my terrible spelling) and cuts herself. The case was ok, but the actress that played the patient was the same actress that played Nina in 24 so the entire time I was watching it I just saw her as some evil jerk. It was weird. Anyways, I liked the idea that a rich guy comes in a starts calling the shots. House seemed a little too nice in this episode. Oh well. Overall, good episode.
although vogler is the chairman now, and House knows whats at stake, he refuses to bulger. because he knows that vogler is just treating the hospital as a business and that it will ruin the hospital's rep. despite house's firm no(towards cameron), it is expected. i mean he said himself, that he doesnt like anybody. maybe it just his defence mechanism against the world or sth. further in the series, its evident that house has a trust issue. besides wilson, he doesnt have a real relationship wiht anyone. there's further development in this ep towards cameron, hint that she likes him.
vogler vs house, theres trouble brewing.
and most importanly, we see the extent at which house will go to save a patient. it not so much solving the puzzle thing anymore, he was willing to lose his medical license for someone he barely knew.
and the scene where he was confronting the patient... well that was superb. the agitation and confusing in house.
House shows compassion, House actually cares for the first time. EH puts his reputation in risk and demands the patient to care about her life as much as he does.
Also, the man who "couldn't speak" was genius as a secondary plot. The man plays the role perfectly, even when he's "scared" by House's yell. The confidential smile was perfect, much better than if he would have spoken. It's his secret and he's going to keep it but, surely, we can all see that, once again, House was right.
The ending with music by The Who is the cherry on top. THE END
Well a living hell comes to the hospital. Vogler comes to the hospital. Cause he gives whole lot of money to the hospital, he gave off a good impression at first but with the whole lab coat thing & the very inappropriate questions to Cuddy, he rubbed the wrong way for me. I like how Cameron asked & confronted House about the feelings for House, so sad when he said no. The ball totally dropped there. Anyways I also like how she tries to impress him by getting better by manipulating people. Great character development & as for the patient, a very good case, of course the patient is lying, and has bulimia, House lies to save her, he couldn't even trust Wilson, Very cringe-worthy. Great episode!
This episode was really the first time that an episode leads into another one. A billionair, Edward Volgler, takes over the hospital, and takes and immediate (yet hardly surprising) dislike to House.
Meanwhile, House treats a bulimic CEO patient, and an amusing clinic patient who can't talk. The interactions with the patient, and House doing whatever it takes, shows that he does care. Unlike future or past episodes, House had already figured out his puzzle by the time he made the choice to fight for her, and it is always interesting to see the softer side of his character mingled with the sarcasm and bitterness.
Other development was focussed on too- House and Wilson's friendship is shown further when the latter supports House, saying their friendship "is an ethical responsibility". We see Cameron's crush on House develop further, and also show Chase betraying House to protect his job. There is also a vague, brief mention of a prior House and Cuddy fling, which opens the door for all the shippers.
Overall, this episode was a fascinating episode, building the suspense to see how House will react to the most powerful adversary so far, and seeing his job under threat for the first time due to his unethical ways.
