The cat's out of the bag

I will have to agree with the previous two reviews as opposed to the first impressions listed here, that seem to be rather negative. House is still one of the best shows on television right now, it's about character interaction as much as it is about medical mystery, and characters evolving, things changing between them isn't a bad thing, in fact it's the only way characters can go in order to avoid becoming stale and predictable.
That said, this particular episode wasn't the best written in terms of the patient case. With so many revelations at hand the patient unavoidably fell into the background a little, we know she has a condition which forces her to lie, we know some kind of substance is affecting her, and with the usual twists and turns in the diagnosis we suspect some rare disease might be the penultimate cause for all the symptoms. Apart from that however the focus is on the main characters, with good excuse might I add.
Wilson, House and Cuddy are transported away from the hospital environment to attend a medical conference, and the dynamics between the trio are given a more definite form. After teasing the viewers with the possibility for House and Cuddy reconnecting in previous episodes, the relationship is officially put to rest. House more or less declares his interest, in the party and afterwards when he takes Wilson's suggestion to offer to babysit. But it is a little bit too late, after such a long, bumpy ride with him Cuddy has given up on the potential of having a solid relationship with House. Since the beginning I think what excited her the most was the unpredictability and unconventionality of such a potential. House is the charming, unusual person you know will never bore you, but will never offer you a steady, idyllic home environment either. He will never tell you what you want to hear or do what you expect him to. I would go for him in a heartbeat, but it's understandable why Cuddy wouldn't, since she has a child to take care of now. In a way the love interest between those two was predestined to fail from the moment Cuddy adopted her baby, and in my opinion that's why she resisted investing in the baby emotionally at first. Part of her unconscious understood that as soon as the bond with the baby was permanent, it would have to be her first priority, and that would mean giving up on whatever hopes she had for House. Too bad because I would like House to finally be happy for a change, but then again, House with a white picket fence, a baby and a barbecue in the back yard, is not really House... The writers wouldn't be true to the character if they did that. Wilson finally acknowledges his friendship with House. Throughout the series these two have been having trouble establishing a continuous rapport, and especially when Amber died I thought Wilson would never forgive House. But after what happened in the conference in this episode, I think both of them understand now why this friendship is essential to them. House defends Wilson's career in his own erratic, unconventional way and is able to provide Wilson with what he really needs: interest and reassurance. Wilson has learned to understand House and he realizes that, even though the package may not come in the form he was expecting, House can be a true and devoted friend to him. Also, as has been pointed out in another review, the euthanasia issue is a hot potato everywhere, especially in the US, and it was very bold to tackle such a subject, to turn the focus on human suffering and the doctor's part in it. Is he supposed to alleviate the patient's suffering at the expense of his life, when his life can no longer be saved? Which comes first? Such an impossible question and yet every doctor deals with it at one point in their career.
Last but not least, Chase has finally revealed his secret to Cameron!! That is hugely important for what will come next. This moment was bound to come, their relationship would never have survived the strain of keeping it a secret. Now it remains to be seen how Cameron will react - though given Jennifer Morrisson's announced departure, Cameron will probably leave Chase. I disagree with condemning Chase for what he did but... there's nothing I can do about it unfortunately.
A crucial episode, necessary for the plot's further development, and as always a quality episode from House.
