  • Life is but a soap opera

This series keeps getting nuttier all the time. The episode begins with House kidnapping the actor from his favorite soap opera. Cuddy has to deal with the hospital accreditation. Wilson and Amber have their first fight, as the promo goes.

    --------------------------------------SPOILER ALERT----------------------------------------

House brings his idol to the hospital, and as he is running some tests, the actor really gets sick. The race is on to find the cure.

Wilson and Amber need a new mattress. He is a real wuss and cannot take a stand. They go to the store. Finally Wilson decides to get a waterbed.

As for the patient, it ends up that he has an allergy to quinine, which it in the tonic water he drinks while shooting his show.
  • House's soap!

    "Superb"
I thought this episode started brilliantly but faded as it went on. I loved how House kidnapped the guy and then drugged him, and his one liners in between were brilliant.

It was also nice seeing Cameron back in the diagnostic room, making some great suggestions. I still love House and Cameron's chemistry, and I miss it on the show, especially now the writers are not making Thirteen even vaguelly interesting at the moment.

The hospital is also being inspected, which made Cuddy and House's dynamics very interesting and also funny. I loved the scene down the morgue! However, the case became less interesting as it went on, and we had no final resolution for the patients unhappyness- it was a bit of a waste, especially how well the patient acted at the beginning. Furthermore, Cameron should have stayed the whole episode rather than half of it- it would have given a better scope.

Nevertheless, I believe the writers strike had something to do with plot holes, and as a whole the episode was good and funny. I liked how Wilson and Ambers relationship is developing- her character is finally starting to grow on me!

Overall, a good, if not brilliant, filler episode.
  • House treats an actor. Starring: Hugh Laurie, Lisa Edelstein, Omar Epps, Robert Sean Leonard, Jennifer Morrison, Jesse Spencer, Peter Jacobson, Kal Penn, and Olivia Wilde

This episode was a really great episode, and i loved how House (Hugh Laurie) like forced his way to help an actor (guest star Jason Lewis) from General Hospital. This episode brought back the really hilarious scenes that i had been wishing for. House is ne of the few shows that have the ability to turn a drama into a pretty good comedy, and this episode was really great because of this. The fight between Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard) and Amber (guest star Anne Dudek) was really sweet because i really love this couple. This is one of the best episodes of house, and i thought that bringing Jason Lewis onto the show was amazing.

Amber & Wilson's first fight as it seems. Was pretty sill comparing to House's standards, but a very interesting plot, House takes a soap opera actor. House's plots never get old. Meanwhile Cuddy's job is on the line, which is no surprise. Not firing House & all. Kinf of a cliffhanger although it is never mentioned in the next episode. Did Cuddy lose her job? Obviously not. The waterbed plot, which shows Amber has really really changed. It is like a different person, you do see some niceness of her in this episode. A very well thought out episode. But still not good enough.
  • an ingenious, smart episode

You got to give it to House. Even when other shows were slagging behind or falling over themselves to get to season finales post-strike, the writers of House come up with an ingenious episode like this one. Fans of House understand the signifigance of just how smart this episode is and is a nod back to the series. The episode is about how House's favorite actor from his favorite soap opera has strangely fallen ill and House will personally not rest until the actor is cured. It was really fun to see House stumble around this guy, starstruck, and act like a fanatic when normally he's extremely composed. It was really funny when House went as far as to kidnap the guy off set just to get him treated. And even though in previous episodes the soap opera was shown for only about thirty seconds, House and the actors were able to recite whole plotlines in one single breath. It was interesting to see that the actor in actuality hates being on the show and is only sticking around until a better thing comes along. Not only does it hurt House but it makes a choosy telling off between him and the actor that if you want to do something better in your life, go do it. House technically gets a diagnosis wrong but wound up getting it right at the same time. Confusing. House has on occasion, misdiagnosed and someone else had to step in and solve the case, but to get it flat wrong and still be right is intriguing. Since he technically got it right in the end, it was a wash, so he'll continue, smug and sound. The episode ends with the actor back on set. Will he take House's advice and leave? Something tells me House's favorite actor's not going anywhere anytime soon. This was a smart, cleverly written episode that was always in control and it proves once again that House is one of the best shows on tv.
  • Another great episode

Although season 4 has reduced episodes due to the writer's strike, it has clearly not stopped it's great story lines.

The fact that House would kidnap a soap opera star by posing as a cab driver is great! Amber and Wilson's first fight is a great storyline, with House giving Wilson poor advice on the subject.

My favorite moment in this episode is where House is int he dressing room holding an Emmy award and posing, classic House! Season 4 has been the best season so far, the new crew has added new story lines to the show, making it even better.

In my eyes, another great episode from the writers, and great acting from Hugh Laurie and the crew!

House gets to diagnose one of his favorite soap stars of all time and knowing House, he probably has a number of favorite soap stars. We also get to see Cuddy and House go through a lot more of their funny antics when Cuddy struggles to keep House on a short leash. Wilson seems like he is falling back into one of his old marriages again and Amber won't stand for it. At first I wasn't too all over Amber, but she's starting to grow on me ever since she gave Wilson that speech about all his ex wives. The old team is getting more air time, could they be coming back for good?

I thought it was a good episode, though the end of the episode struck me as a little weird as House pretty much fails to get the diagnosis correct. I know he cannot get it right every time, but every time he fails to get it right it makes his character a littyle more flawed in a way. The reason why he is able to be a jerk to everyone is because he is always right all the time. In this episode he did everything the way he usually does, but when it came down to getting the diagnosis right, he was wrong (granted the treatment that he used did work out in the end. I thought the episode started out pretty unexpected with House kidnapping the main star of the show that he always watches. The relationship between Houses team and the soap opra star were pretty average at best I thought. Overall, decent episode with a lot of humor that helps the lack of drama, for me.
  • "No expectations - no disappointments"...I let myself to have some for the ep and maybe that's why, it felt kind of a disappointment...even though it wasn't bad and House had some nice moments in it.Unfortunately, not as many as he use to have.

    8.9
    "Great"
I guess,Jason Lewis guest starring as a POTW made me hope it will be a really good ep.As much as I remembered, he's acting was quite impressive in 'Sex and the City".Unfortunately, he didn't impress at all this time around, but of coarse my main complains are again due to a writing flaws and compromising with the cast.

Both Cameron and Foreman felt out of place and really spare characters. It's still unclear what Foreman's job really is and why is it so important to have that fifth wheal on the team.As for Cameron -it seems the only emotion has left to her (or it's the only one JM is capable to play now?) is annoyance. She's been annoyed constantly for the whole season ,ep after ep,- by House,by new Ducklings ,by Chase after all and it's just incredibly boring to watch. We really need those precious minutes of the screen time to more important things...

The new team was not noticeable at all this ep - I can't say any of them had significant character development, unless 13 being widely open about her sexuality (but somehow still not her name)is suppose to be called said development. And that's a shame, because ,I agree with those viewers ,who think Taub has a big potential to become the one character House may have his philosophical discussions with. They lack that aspect of the show this season leaning more to a, quite silly in times, comedy - I hope it'll change in season 5.

The medical case was so so,but I don't care about that anymore - they became quite repetitive and not that much interesting since the middle of season 3 ,so I got used to it.It doesn't bother me anymore, but I still would want to notice that the allergy case in "Damned if You Do" had much more sense.Oh,well...

Wamber scenes were simply forced IMO -the actors have no chemistry together and I really didn't get the whole "teaching Wilson to chose what HE wants" storyline. It bored me and judging by the expression on his face House was bored too ,discussing Wilson's dream of owning a water bed.I hope the end of the season will be also the end of Wamber -enough is enough...And I don't mind Amber to replace 13 (after she'd brake up with Wilson) - "the lesser of the two evils" as Cuddy commented on a different subject in season 1. I liked what they wrote for Cuddy in this ep.Even,if their motives were to make a hook for exploring the long promised to the audience Huddy next season , it still was pleasant to watch her trusting House's medical judgment for a change and acting outside the usual "no, you can't" formula.I wouldn't put her on a table in her first scene though -it's just so body language wise wrong place for the boss during the half official meeting with her subordinates -even ,if it gives a good shot of LE's legs;)...

And last but I hope still not least - House. It was nice to see him concentrated on the case mostly (unlike in the previous ep) and he had some very good lines( not the Cameron scene - that one was so obviously whiten to please the Hamerons - pathetic). And there was one scene (half-monologue about humanity with delirious POTW0) in which there was so much sadness and loneliness it felt almost tragic.I hope House will have more decent "sparrings" to talk about that kind of things next season - not so important ,if it'll be Taub, POTW (and I hope sometimes clinic patient - of whom we practically forgot by now)or...maybe they will come up with some other idea? Just, please, don't expend the cast -it's size is a major problem as it is.
  • Something has to be wrong with tv doctor..

    8.5
    "Great"
Quite humorous episode - House adopts his favorite soap opera doctor as he is sure something is wrong and despite noone believes him and the hospital is under valuation and House has to behave - he does not. So, there is a lot of funny moments, some shocks, some moments what are really filler (Amber and Wilson part, sorry)... But I think they are going to drop the new team at the end of this season - there were too many hints towards that - they started to develope those three more, and Cameron was back at the House's Office... I somehow think that is right as the way they have lingered the whole group there.. it just... do not work.

Not too impressive episode, but really good House...
  • The epsidoe comes of feeling abit like its just making up the numbers. It's amusing and interesting with some good charecter points but ultimatley nothing changes.

    7.6
    "Good"
This was far from a bad episode, but it just had a vaugley pointless feel to it.

The initial concept of the show, with house kidnaping a star from his favourite soap and diagonising him based on a tiny decrease in reading speed is very House, showcasing his brillance, obsessive attention to detail and plain crazyness (even if it is pushing suspension of disbelief).

Unfortuntatley looking over the episode there was much less focus on the diagnosis and the medicine than there has been in the past and while i dont object to more time given over to the charecters i don't feel the show should drift too far from its roots. The lack of time for medicine is almost cetainly down to having too many charecters on screen,we have house, cuddy, wilson, amber, the new team AND the old team. While i love the originals i feel they need to limit them to cameos or risk compromisng the show, thers jsut too much going on and not enough time given over to development of the new charcters (what have we really learned about them so far, do we care about them yet?).

Also houses misdiagnosis at the end seems vaugley pointless, wrong cause but right medication. It's all very well that he needs to be wrong now and again but i feel it needs to have consequences, as we've seen time and time again that errors and rash judgements dont make him revaluate his own charecter and practises. So for it to hold any meaning it has to alter how people deal with him, maybe the patient dies and cuddy cracks down on him restircting hsi freedoms, mmaybe the team get mor uppity with him.

The Wilson and Amber side story works well. As a final note Cameron saying she misses the job but not House? After previous episodes it just doesnt come off as beleviable especially as she's a people person who by and large seems to have been amused by House, (however if i misconstrued and she just means romantically theni can be more onboard)
  • House abducts his favourite tv star to chech his health. Meanwhile the hospital is inspected.

House abducts his favourite tv star so he can proof that he is sick. Very nice how he disguises himself as a chauffeur and how evan reacts. After a few failed testings House figures out that Evan has allergic reactions. The whole interaction between House and Even were great. I really loved seeing Cameron back in the office. Okay she just made the file-work but she really helped solving the case and she acted like she has never been away. But the best moment was when Thirteen, Taub, Foreman and House were watching the show and Thirteen said: I think I dated that nurse. The look in the eyes of Taub and House were awesome. There also have been some Wilson & Amber moments. They tried to buy a mattress. In the end Wilson bought a waterbed, but hated it after the first sleepless night.
  • I'm going against the grain on this one - OK, but not a great episode. Now let the 'disagrees' role in........

    8.2
    "Great"
thought the episode was well put together ... the initial The idea of House kidnapping a potential patient was great, especially as it was a cast member of his favourite medical-soap!

From here I think it went down hill.

As usual the team and Cuddy were somewhat sceptical and the usual round of 'any diagnosis is good as long as it is one of House's' ensued. When it transpired that the hospital was being inspected it opened up a can of worms for the Cuddy - House relationship involving the lunch venue moving to the Morgue, and the Staff HDTV to Houses office. Ok so far so good.

Unfortunately i thought of a few things that were below par...

1.The old arguement of which is the better, new team or old team, is bound to resurface. Why did they ever bother changing if nothing really did as far as viewing is concerned. Nice to see Chase just walk away (perhaps its time to leave for good?)and Cameron to help, albeit reluctantly, because she misses the job (but not House!) - but why is Foreman still around and what does he do?

2.The diagnostics and ensuing arguements and reversals were pretty poor. I almost didn't care about the medicine and felt like watching it as a character rather than medical drama! There was pulse in my thoughts of will they/wont they find the symptoms and a cure?

3.House vs Cuddy. Always one to watch but it didn't feel so well thought out this time round. With the inspection ongoing I would have expected Cuddy to go to great pains to hide House, and of course for House to have made it his job to diagnose in public. The quick and easy compromise was poor, and House's reaction to the idea of Cuddy losing her job was simply cold considering she is one of his few true friends.

4.Wilson and Amber. They are great characters but this is almost a second storyline now. The fact that Amber actually wants Wilson to be strong and look out for himself rather than pander to her needs is a nice idea. What has it got to do with the hospital anymore? or House for that matter. The result of all this good vs evil?

overall a great show a lack lustre episode

typical House kidnapping routine the team (Foreman?)

    House vs Cuddy (lacked heart)

    Wilson/Amber (off topic/filler)

final results are now in = 8.2
  • House got lucky! Thats all...

    9.1
    "Superb"
I think that this was a little unHouse like episode. There were no proof and he just got lucky...thats not very superdoctor like, if you know what i mean.

Kidnapping from the street, that House, but rest on the episode...NOT!

And besides, what happened with all the drama show and everything, I think it is more comedy than everything else...

But I'am still looking forward next weeks episode, because bad episode in house is still good in overall...

I like the thing between Cuddy and House the most...and I'm actually looking forward of something happening between them:D That would be fun:D

Basically - I want more drama!!!
  • OK ... anything with Jason Lewis in it definitely gets a 10! Yes ... I know ... very shallow ... but the episode very good too ... kidnapping a patient off the street ... who else would do that but House??

    10
    "Perfect"
I thought the episode was well put together ... the initial curiosity of House kidnapping a patient was wierd until you realised he was really trying to save his life ... do doctors do that a lot ... I don't mean kidnap patients ... but sit watching television and suddenly see an illness on some actor's face? Spooky! Anyway ... back to the episode ... Cuddy and the inspection ... and House blackmailing her for a TV by eating sandwiches in the morgue ... well not just eating them ... storing them in the body fridge ... eeewww ... and by 'them' I mean all the sandwiches and food he stole from other people ... he just has no shame! So it all turned alright in the end ... I just worry that they put a patient through SO much ... to the brink of death and back on a whim ... all in the name of research ... you might as well put us in a cage with a wheel!

Chase seems to have less and less to do in the series and it is the first time in a while that Cameron had a meatier role ... even if it were to tell him she doesn't miss him ... which of course we all know is a lie!

Wilson and Amber are sweet together ... he still has a lot to learn about women and should definitely not take advice from House ... especially about following your dream and getting a waterbed ... big mistake!
  • good episode....

    9.0
    "Superb"
House kidnaps his favorite soap star and is convinced that he is sick. And he was - he was apparently allergic to something in the drink that he drank on the show...ya, it was weird. Anyways, the case was ok, the main reason the episode was so good was the inspector. Cutty was trying to control House while the inspector was there...ya, well, she tried. I thought it was really sweet when House said that she should call security so that she would not get in trouble and the patient would, hopefully. That was really sweet. He's not all bad; well, I actually like his rough character, but it's nice to see some dynamics. I also thought the whole bed thing with Wilson was halarious. He went out and bought the water bed and hated it; it was great! Overall, good episode.
  • Another great performance from the crazy doctor!

    "Superb"
I must say that this is one of the tv shows that I look forward every week. It's simply brilliant. It makes me laugh, it has good actors and the stories are always interesting. Today he just decided to kidnap a famous actor because he thought he had a brain tumor. Of course he didn't, but he had something else. The tenacious way House kept him in the hospital was really funny. And Wilson makes it look even better. Just standing in the elevator looking at that crazy guy as if it was a surprise....

Although it's always great, this team doesn't give the same touch the other did... it's losing that medical charisma of the first three seasons.. I would like to see it go back to that.

    Still, simply great!!!
  • Fun episode on the surface, but one that shows House as the tragic hero he is underneath it all.

    9.0
    "Superb"
Fun episode on the surface, but one that shows House as the tragic hero he is underneath it all.

This episode was much better then last week in terms of the plot, the potw's story and House's total interest in it, and the dialogues.

But maybe exactly because of this, it made me realize how much was lost with the decision to keep the old team on and with dragging the stupid Wilson-Amber thing so far.

I'm so sick of Foreman who we still don't know what the heck is his title or what he's doing there in the first place. And I am so sick of seeing Cameron - who "misses the job but doesn't miss House", yet hangs around him all the time. Well dear, we didn't miss you either since you resigned - so how about a bit of consistency and off you go already and leave us alone? And next time you declare you're not going to show your boobs to the patient, don't try so hard to show them to House. He did say they were not the kind of knockers he was looking for anyway. And stop preaching House about how important the paperwork is - we have one Wilson, and that's much more then enough - especially now, with Amber by his side. What a pair they are - such total lack of chemistry and energy whatsoever - so very boring and pointless. Total waste of precious screening time. Oh the good old days, when all we knew about Wilson was hearsay...

At least the new team got more time at long last. Taub, in his very quiet way, is becoming a much more complex and interesting character. Kutner also shows some more interesting sides to him and even 13 (enough with that already?) was quite bearable.

Cameron's remark that House hired 13 because he missed her (you wish...) brought up to the surface the thing that's been really bugging me this season - the writers' silly attempts with "meta" aspects and constant winks at the public. It's just sickening. Time to cut it all - enough with House holding the Emmy award wink wink, with the "I think you're sleeping with me" and all the other Meta B.S.

If there's a real need for Meta here, then how about some more Metaphysics, which House is so interested in?

That's the one thing I got from House's talk, or rather, attempt to talk, with the patient. House is still eagerly looking for meaning, but he doesn't have even one person with whom he can talk about any of the matters that are so important to him. In this, he's one of the most tragic characters around, even if it's so nicely disguised with his great sense of humor.

It's just heartbreaking to see what he really thinks deep down - "Nothing matters - we are just cockroaches", "Hope is for sissies", "Most of the people I save don't deserve a second chance" - and then all this is answered by lines from a soap, coming from the delirious soap star...

To me, that was one of the most significant scenes in House ever. It established him as a very lonely character on the intellectual (and therefore emotional) level: not even one of the people who are close to him can even begin to understand him.

His best friend's (?) dream is to have a water bed... and "he's happy", even though he has no clue to why he is and even though he doesn't look happy at all. For Wilson, that's what's being happy is, and he just doesn't get it it's really not what House is after. And it's the same for all of them actually - just like Chase didn't get what House was talking about when he mentioned the ontological concept of "nice" amidst a bowling game... House is surrounded by mediocrity and it's no wonder he's alienating himself from the people around him.

To me, that's where this season is lacking - in emphasizing and acknowledging House's quest for meaning. I think the last time House has had someone he can talk to on that level was in Informed Consent or One Day One Room, but this season there was nothing there for him on this level (accept maybe for a couple of scenes on 97 Seconds).

I can only hope season 5 would compensate for it, because otherwise we'll end up with House the soap. And he can say he loves his soaps all he wants - his words and actions show he still wants more from life then that. Much, much more.
  • I'm finding the Drama Comedy continuum leaning more towards comedy. That's fine with me, but is everyone going to like that?

    9.8
    "Superb"
I thought this was one of the best episodes I have seen in a while. I couldn't believe how much happened in an hour. It felt like 2 episodes crammed into one. Tons of character time, tons of interactions. i was surprised to see Cameron on screen more than usual, but they left out Chase for the most part, which kinda sucked. she was even helping to diagnose. i found it hilarious that she was working on House's paperwork - AGAIN! tons of laughs - love the House-Cuddy, House-Wilson, Wilson-Amber, and House-Cameron scenes. absolutely hilarious in some parts - "i really want a waterbed", then later "i hate it!, do you think they'll take it back" "oh, they'll take it back...". the opening scene where he swerves into the ambulance bay, classic. classic House handling the case. i loved the diagnostics - i actually understood what was going on this time. i was surprised to hear "I WAS WRONG!". allergic to some substance, extremely rare I'm sure, but very, very interesting. loved the ending... all around, it was quite good. again, surprised at the AMOUNT of dialogue and how much advancement of the story there was. that's something that was missing from the pre-strike episodes (i.e. dragging on, slow... etc.)

overall, the only reason this doesn't get 10.0 is that Chase was still absent. also, Foreman was kinda weird in this episode. i'm finding there's too many characters now, so there's always going to be someone who doesn't get ample face time. i was happy to see more Cuddy than usual, as well as Cameron and some more of the House-Amber-Wilson triangle. i can only hope the next and last two episodes will top this one. thank goodness David Shore has returned to help guide the last episodes of the season.
