This is in reference to the ancient Greek play Oedipus Rex by Sophocles. In the play Oedipus unknowingly kills his father and marries his mother, fathering two daughters on her. When it comes to light at the end of the play that his wife is in fact his mother, Oedipus stabs his eyes with pins.
