DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING?

... Rob Thomas, the creator of Veronica Mars and the man responsible for making Kickstarter a hot-button issue (but with good reason!), is now bringing a present-day version of Les Misérables to television. Whuck? Yeah, I know, but just hear me out. The project, which has landed at Fox, revolves around a lawyer who runs an exoneration program, all the while fighting to evade the consequences of his own wrongful conviction from a long time ago. He is, of course, constantly trying to remain one step ahead of a US Attorney who just refuses to let anything go. Now let's play cast the pilot! Michael Muhney as the lawyer! Ken Marino as the US Attorney! Ryan Hansen as ... anyone, I don't really care! And of course, it goes without saying that Amanda Seyfried pretty much has to be in this, right? [Deadline Hollywood]

BUSINESS TIME

... Alyson Hannigan once turned down J.J. Abrams. I don't really think there's anything more to say other than WTF? Who turns down J.J. Abrams? [EW]

... If you're sitting at home right now wondering what the hell you're going to do during the upcoming Labor Day weekend, you might want to consider MTV Jams' three-day Yo! MTV Raps marathon, which will feature 100 of the most-played music videos from the 1988-1995 era. You might also want to consider these things: eating a lot of hamburgers, watching college football, and drinking some beers. [The Wrap]

... If that's not really your style and you still don't have any plans for Labor Day Weekend, you can always—provided you don't have Time Warner—marathon Showtime's current seasons of Ray Donovan and Dexter. The Ray Donovan marathon will air September 1 starting at 1pm, while you can catch up on the final season of Dexter September 2 at 1pm on Showtime 2. [Showtime via press release]

... NBC has purchased a new comedy project about a bowling league from Krysten Ritter, Liz Vassey, and Aaron Kaplan. The project centers around a group of friends who have a Wednesday-night bowling league, but after two of the members break up, neither wants to give up the league. The dude should quit and head over to Breckin Meyer's Thursday night dudes only dinner; it sounds like more fun. [Deadline Hollywood]

CASTING NEWS

... Back in July it was announced that Ellie Kemper would be guest-starring in Season 9 of How I Met Your Mother, but Kemper has since had to pull out due to a scheduling conflict. But before you go and get all sad, don't. Because Anna Camp has graciously volunteered to take her spot as Cassie, one of the most attractive (duh) guests at Robin and Barney's wedding. [TV Line]

... Casting for CSI's 300th episode is heating up. On the heels of the news that Marg Helgenberger is returning, is the announcement that One Tree Hill alum Bethany Joy Lenz will be guest-starring in the milestone episode. Lenz will play a "sexy, seemingly normal-looking mother of two." Hmmm, where have I seen a character like that before? Oh right. [TV Line]

... Casting for Ron Moore's new series Outlander is also making headway. Stephen Walters (Layer Cake) and Annette Badland (Doctor Who) have each booked recurring roles on the series, adapted from the book series of the same name by Diana Gabaldon. Walters will play Angus Mhor, who drinks heavily and is always ready for a fight. Badland will play Mrs. Fitzgibbons, an intelligent woman who holds Castle Leoch together. [TV Guide]

Note to this site...when people think of Rob Thomas they think of the Matchbox 20/solo career guy, NOT whoever is above referred to.

MTV had a Yo! MTV Raps marathon?????!!!!! WTF, why didn't know about this? That show was the jam back in the day (when MTV still showed music videos).

Les Misérables present day, Rob Thomas, and suggestion of Michael Muhney in the lead....I'll give it a go.

Love Krysten Ritter. I don't care how lame the premise sounds and that it's on NBC, I'm definitely trying it if it airs.

It's Rob Thomas, which means I'm going to give it a try. Doesn't equal a guarantee that I'll enjoy it, but he gets a check it out regardless pass.

I think eating wings should be added to the list of things to do this weekend. They go so well with football :D

I'll watch pretty much anything Rob Thomas does. Just like Joss, Amy Sherman-Palladino, Bryan Fuller, etc.

Les Miserables as lawyers sounds crazy but hey, I trust Rob Thomas esp. if he gets the cast from Veronica Mars & Party Down...

Dude owes me a movie (and a tshirt) before he starts getting distracted by another project. Fox is just going to have to wait their turn.

That's really interesting about Alyson Hannigan turning down J.J Abrams, I really want to know more about what the potential pilot was.

Anyway, I wouldn't say she's worse off for not going it, she got to do the comedy she wanted (as exceptionally long-running and successful one at that), so good on her.

This project of Rob Thomas sounds like another lawyer show.

Slightly surprised Miss Thomas didn't make this connection, but do you know about Super Fun Night with Rebel Wilson? That show is like Thursdays too, isn't it?

"Les Miserables on TV with lawyers, just what I've been waiting for" said nobody ever. They're going to have Javert's life story unfold in the modern day, all 20+ years from the start of the book to the end? And why ROB THOMAS?!? He's such much better than this - jeez, even the Other Rob Thomas from Matchbox Twenty is better than this, and he doesn't make tv. And did I mention lawyer shows have outstayed their welcome yet? BECAUSE THEY HAVE. But at least it's on Fox, so it'll be gone and we'll forget this ever happened after 6 months. Name a laywer show on Fox to last more than a year since Ally McBeal a decade ago.

I turned down JJ Abrams, I turned him down with Star Trek Into Darkness, it was a wise career choice for me as well.

CSI's 300th really needs Gil Grissom back, not Catherine who JUST LEFT.

Hey, some lawyer shows are good! I rather enjoy The Good Wife. And Suits. But I will agree that Rob Thomas is better than this.

Yes, The Good Wife and Suits are awesome, but they feel like the closing note on this current era of lawyer shows, they feel like the thing that everybody else will fail to live up to, and when that happens it's back to doctor shows or cop shows or even firefighter shows - solution shows, where every episode something is solved.

that's not the dude from matchbox 20! this is news to me as I laughably thought they were one in the same all of this time. the gall of this guy. there can be only one rob thomas and so from this day forward the tv clown shall be known as robert thomas whether he like it or not and regardless of it being his actual name. also "oh look, this was a popular movie! i'm bringing it to TV." YAWN!!

hopefully this new rytter show is better than "don't trust the bitch."

I love Krysten Ritter, but does that kind of sound like Happy Endings to anyone else? Maybe this show will fill the gap in my heart!
Reply

Haha, I absolutely love Happy Endings but the comparison never even popped in my head. Now that I read your comment, that's all I can think about -- Krysten Ritter in Happy Endings... with bowling?!
Reply

That's exactly what I was thinking.... Happy endings with a bowling theme.... :/

I'm not sure what feelings I'd get from the YO! MTV Raps since I know I'd love seeing it but then I'd have to realize we're in the now with the terrible crap rap. Oh that era with P.E., De La and Tribe. So much more and always wonder what the hell happened??

Hmmm, not too sure how I feel about this one. Rob has to make sure not to call it Les Miz directly tho, maybe call it something like Master Of The House or Song Of Angry Men or something, let people know what it is without saying what it is, if that makes any sense. Also no singing please (see Smash, Cop Rock, etc.) We're leaving this in your hands, Rob
