Having just finished the season 1 dvd this afternoon, I have my own theory:

Robin ends with Barney with 7-10 kids

Ted and Lily have an affair, then Ted finds out he's really been in love with Marshall the whole time.

Ted ends up with Robin's younger sister, whom we just met this season, therefore the 'aunt robin' comment in the first episode.  It won't happen until a couple years into the series, because her sister is too young now.

    I'm glad its not Robin.
It gets rid of the cliche.
I hope there is a cliffhanger.
    Which woman will he decide?
And it can be like "Will I choose the vet, or MissDreamy?"

If yo watch the room where the kids are, behind they there are like 3 pics, one of ted's wedding, another of the whole family and one of a girl alone, well if you watch the picture of the 4 people it looks like Ted's family, you can see an old woman with black hair a little girl and a little boy and maybe Ted.. so the "Mom" have black hair.. just my observation =)

My theory is that Ted meets his two kids mother sometime, but unfortunately she has passes away by 2029, which explains why she is never telling any part of the story or why the kids haven't ever gone up to her and asked her instead of Ted. And then in 2029 Ted and Robin are together, MAYBE, and Robin and Ted are married.

But if they're married in 2029, why call her Aunt Robin? Stepmothers are usually called mom or by their first name, not aunt so and so.

Even if Robin is their "mother" she isn't their biological mother... and he said "your mother" and not "your mother which you know as aunt Robin".

Also if it is Robin the show would be over bye the end of episode one.

I'm not sure cuz I only saw the first episode when it originally aired over a year ago but are we positive that it's Ted telling the story or is it assumed because the show seems to primarily tell us about his love life? Cuz I could see them doing something like it was really barney talking to his kids about how he who was the ultimate bachelor came to find real love and have a family. The whole focusing on Ted thing could be to throw us off. But then the "aunt robin" remark could mean Ted and Robin end up together.

    Hi All,

Love this show, thought i'd chime in with my opinion. There's a lot of talk about biological parents/step parents etc, i don't think the answer is going to be as complicated as that, we're not talking about Lost, we're talking about a comedy.

The first episode where old Ted confirms it's Aunt Robin is sufficient evidence to prove that it's not going to be her and as pointed above in Barneys brother episode, it hints that they have indeed broken up and are over it by the time of the wedding.

Maybe this is just me, but i thought it was obvious who he was going to end up with. In the episode "Milk" where Lily's car breaks down, Ted postpones his date to help her and then realises he wants to be with Robin so ends up cancelling it.

His date was the match picked by the super computer, his perfect women and they explained a lot about her, but they blacked out her face. My reasoning is because they intend to cast an actress as her at some point in the future, if they didn't want to become part of the series at a later date, they could have just shown any old actress...

    What do you think?

Further proof that it is not Robin. In last night's episode, Lucky Penny, Ted says that if he had gotten the job in Chicago, he would have never met their mother. Meaning, he has not met her yet. Not gotten together with, but MET. Meaning it is not Robin.

rick skywalker is right on the money. Ted obviously hasn't met their mother. Sooner or later Ted is going to break up with Robyn, but that might not be for awhile because in 'Single Stamina', we see Ted and Robyn as couple at Barney's gay brother's wedding set a year ahead in time. So the story is still leading us through the Robyn saga, with a few tasty hints to keep us going. CBS have obviously released what a great show they have, and are going to string it out for awhile longer. So my hint is, don't expect to see the real miss Ted Mosby for awhile.

Been saying that for a while. People still insist that Robin is the mother, but I say she hasn't been introduced yet.

    SPOILER

I just watched 'Lucky Penny' and at the end Ted says something like: 'It was good to stay in New York, because otherwise I would never met your mother'.

So according to that, he hasnt met her yet and neither Robin nor Lilly could be the mother for obvious reasons.
