Today at TCA Thomas and Bays were asked about the casting of the mother.

They said that they are undecided on whether to cast a star or an unknown actress. That there are pros and cons for both a star and an unknown.

Thomas also added that "Cobie should have been the mother - we screwed up"

Whether joking or serious, this is a good point. Would you agree that Cobie should have been the mother, or are you pleased with the road the show has taken thus far?

Bays also added on a different topic, "Will we set an end-date? I don't know – Its hard for us to say when we'll be officially out of ideas".

A renewal for 1-2 more seasons would be great in my opinion.

They should have done this a while ago and wrapped up this May. The show is still one of the most inconsistent and prone to churning out clunkers, and the constant stringing along of the audience doesn't help. Until the end is announced, we all know any girl Ted gets involved with is just another red herring.

Completely agree. The show is beginning to drag on and it's pretty obvious that this season the only thing they could think of for ted would be the same thing we've seen dozens of times before so he's become the least important character this Season. I don't know what to think, while I wanted the show to keep going on last year, I thought if it went on we'd get different kinds of episodes, different feel of things and we'd actually feel like we'd gained some information about the possible end of the series from almost every episode. But now that it's like this, as much as I want it to keep going so I get see if the show picks up its act, I think it shouldend afterthe nextSeason and that season she be the whole of Ted going out with the mother, it would be a shame for him to meet her and then the show cut off and the end.

It's getting to be where I don't know if I'll be hanging around to meet the Mother. I'll probably be stepping away, but keep my eyes open on this board for any news about the Mother.

But, it's been dragging on and on and on. And I'm getting tired of being strung along. Jekyll is right--the show has gotten prone to giving us lemons and pretending that it's lemonade.

Supposedly, Barney marries at the end of this season. I may hang around for that.

I don't think any comment about HIMYM production has made me want to cry this much.

By saying Cobie as the mother do they mean Robin is the mother or have Cobie play the mother if she shows up? If it's the latter someone smack a frying pan over their heads. Cobie is Robin. There is no one else that can play her. If it's Robin should be the mother. OH MY GODS LET IT DIE!!! TED AND ROBIN WERE DOOMED TO FAIL! STOP BRINGING IT UP! STOP REVISITING IT! STOP RUINING IT! GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!

Don't worry, they just meant that Cobie and Josh have great chemistry, and IF the show hadn't developed the way it has and IF they hadn't already established in the first episode, that Cobie=Aunt Robin, they wouldn't have the difficult task of casting the mother ahead of them. There is no way Cobie is playing the mother now.

    This.

It couldn't be described any better. That is what they meant and it makes sense for them to say that cause it's true that Josh and Cobie had good chemistry so as you said IF they hadn't cleared out that she isn't the mother in the very first episode she would have been a great choice! Though in my opinion she was never meant to be the mother, cause if I don't remember it wrong in an interview of the creators they said that if the show wouldn't have been renewed for a second season their choise as the mother would've been Victoria!

I know that this is a very important choice to make and of course they feel the pressure of it but in my opinion if they'll just introduce the mother in the end of the series and don't let the audience to actually get to know her it's not that much of a problem if they make a random choice as in just cast a beautiful brunette girl BUT if they intend to go for the scenario of getting to know her and see how her relationship with Ted develops (which I don't see it happening since it's how I MET your mother and not how I dated her or married her) then it's important to cast someone who has great chemistry with Josh and would fulfill at least the majority of the expectations from the audience!

The show is currently having their best ratings of all time.

I wouldn't be surprised if CBS wanted to take advantage of this and renew for another season.

I have to agree that the show should have been over sooner. I was actually hoping that 7 would be the last season. All of the episodes in season 7 (especially the one that ended with Robin talking to her fake children) have been completely inconsistent with the rest of the series. Weirdly, I'm re-watching "Friends" right now and realizing how many situations were ripped off on HIMYM. Someone said that Ted has become the least important character, and that's totally true!!! It's supposed to center on him, and this season has been out of its mind, from an episode featuring Lily's boobs to an episode where Barney and Ted buy a bar - a subplot in an episode from an earlier season that they re-hashed this year. I'm really disappointed with the show. It used to be one of my favorites, and now every week, I find myself hoping, "Please don't be terrible this week!" And every week, I'm disappointed again. If "Cobie should have been the mother," they should have decided that immediately. Here I was, thinking that they had a plan and just now find out that they didn't have one at all. If they were going to make her the mom, they should have discussed it and taken it from there. As a result, Robin has turned from awesome, independent woman to pathetic, Barney-chasing Robin. And the show as a whole has lost direction entirely. I'm not even sure I care who the mom is anymore...

They did screw up. I'm just not sure they understand how badly they screwed up.

A fantastic bit of Trivia, I just read an interview with Josh Radnor (Ted) here (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/26/josh-radnor-on-iliberal-arts-how-i-met-your-mother_n_1234222.html) and he states that they are all under contract to finish the 8th season. After that, who knows. He also said that the whole cast has to agree to stay or leave, they won't work with less of them. SO, based on the success of Jason Segel in the film industry, and Neil Patrick Harris in the film industry, I would be willing to wager that they won't stay for another season. And as much as I enjoyed the show, I am glad. The daughter (in 2030) is at least 17, and the son, a year or two younger (though they look to be easily older) which would put the daughter being born in 2013. My guess? He really better meet the mother, or he is raising someone else's kid. Hell, maybe the kids aren't even his, and he is just a giant tease and they are HER kids. Of course, then you would think that they would know how their mom met their step-dad. Regardless, it sounds as if Jason Segel is not going to renew his contract, and since they talk about Lily and Marshall growing old, they can't exactly have them divorce, or him die, can they? I digress, my point is only this. It looks like next season will be the 8th and possibly final season. And that would be good, because, it is time. I'm tired of waiting for the mother here. Though, here is an additional bit of info. Barney can't get married this spring, he has to get married next spring.(Or another day) because Lily in the flashforward is not pregnant, and she will be pregnant in the spring.

Addressing the question at hand: I see the finale episode being when Ted actually meets his wife. If the series continues and goes into there dating life leading up to their marriage I think they will loose me...but going off of that belief Colbie would have been in one episode, this way we get to see seasons and seasons of her acting. And I personally think she was cast perfectly and can't picture her as the lovey-dovey wife and ending up with 2.5 kids. But thats just me.

Wow! Thank you so much for posting the link to the interview! I would be relieved if they did stop after season 8, and I am certainly relieved that based on their contracts, no one can leave without them stopping the show.

I agree completely with everything you said; it is time, and it is a good show, but this season has been weak.

One thing has me worried, though...if Barney doesn't get married at the end of this season, that means they'll have led us on for not one, but TWO seasons. That indicates lack of fresh ideas and will probably upset a lot of the show's audience if that is the case - but you are right. If Lily is not pregnant in the flash-forward, Barney's wedding isn't this season...

    Uh-oh...

Yes, I am not a fan of them leading us on so much, and maybe they wouldn't have, but Alyson Hanigan is actually pregnant in real life, so it is a little more difficult to manage things that way. Barney's wedding COULD be in the fall. MY HOPE? The wedding is in the fall. It is Robin and Barney's wedding. Ted catches a glimpse of the mother, and like the way that he searches for Victoria in the episode where he met her, he searches for the mother, missing her at times with the last ep being him officially meeting her, and then maybe them saying some cute line, and Bob Saget closing with, "And that is how I met your mother, you guys came x months/years later, blah blah blah." as a voiceover to the scenes of them all celebrating these huge milestones together, flashes of the wedding, pregnancy, babies, cookouts, everyone growing old together, because otherwise, it is just not worth the investment. We deserve to see some of the future.
