Opening credits

Picture of the speaker and his friends from 2005

"Uncle" Marshall knees on the floor and opens a jewelry box and asks: Will you marry me?

The camera moves and shows the speaker (we find out that his name is Ted) standing in front of him and looking a bit confused, but then he tells Marshall that this is perfect and so Marshall will be engaged soon.

They talk about the fact that Ted was present at all the important moments in Marshall and Lily's (Marshall's soon to be fiancée) life: When they met, first date and other first things. So with this big plans Marshall has planned the whole evening and Ted calls "Uncle" Barney to go out and have fun. Barney starts to talk about girls immediately, but they meet later.

Later in the bar, Ted and Barney meet, and Barney complains to Ted that Ted hasn't suited up, because Barney told Ted to do so. Ted is freaking out that he will be the third wheel in the triangle Marshall, Lily and Ted. They will have a family and he will be all alone. Barney is angry and hits him.

Flash back to the day Barney and Ted first met

They are in bar and Barney just joins Ted and two friends and tells him how to live. One piece of advice he gives Ted is: Don't get married till you are 30.

Back to 2005

Ted agrees about that; don't get married before you are 30. Barney wants to prove to him, that he is Ted's best friend and not Marshall. So Barney starts his game called "Have you met Ted?" So he goes to the next girl and asks him, have you met Ted? And so he presents her Ted. So Ted meets Yasmin.

Back at Marshall and Ted's place: Lily comes home from her work as Kindergarten teacher. She had a hard day because it was finger painting day and some boy got a bit too close to her. She is surprised that he is cooking. She thinks it's sweet, but she is afraid he will lose his eyebrows again. He tells her that he is full of surprises tonight. So wants to know more, but he doesn't tell her anything.

Back at the bar Ted is telling Yasmin about his situation and how bad he feels about it.

Back at the apartment Lily took over the cooking and Marshall surprises her with a bottle of Champagne. She loves it, but Marshall is afraid to open it.

The frame divides: Above Lily and Marshall arguing and in the other half Ted and Yasmin in the bar.

Marshall proposes to Lily and Ted asks Yasmin if she wants to go out some time. Lily is happy and agrees immediately. Yasmin tells Ted, that Carl the barkeeper is her boyfriend.

Back at the apartment Marshall and Lily just had sex on the kitchen floor. So Marshall is ready to open that bottle of Champagne. He doesn't know why he ever was afraid of open such a bottle, but then the cork pops out and Lily screams. Marshall is horrified.

Back at the bar Ted is freaking out completely because he isn't the one who is getting married and Barney doesn't understand how Carl can have such a beautiful girlfriend. Ted is thinking that he hasn't found his big love, but then he sees her: A beautiful brown haired girl at the other side of the bar. Ted is too afraid to speak to her so Barney just plays "have you me Ted?" again, while she gets some drinks at the bar.

Meanwhile Marshall and Lily enter a cab, and Lily holds an ice bag to her eye. Marshall tells her how much he's sorry about it. Marshall tells the driver to go to the nearest hospital. The cab driver asks Marshall if he hit her. Marshall and Lily look at each other and start laughing. Lily tells the driver, that Marshall isn't even able to spank her in bed, even if she wants it. The driver understands and asks further questions while driving.

Back at the bar Robin (the girl Ted just saw) tells Ted that she is a reporter for Metro News 1. Robin has to go, because she's there with some friends and they are celebrating the break up of one of them. So no boys allowed. Ted offers that she can throw a drink in his face. Ted invites her to dinner, she agrees and gives him her number, then throws a drink at him. Barney thinks it's cool, till Ted presents the phone number.

The next night:

Ted and Robin are in a small bistro and talk about a French horn at the wall.

Back at the apartment Marshall and Lily sit on the couch. Lily has an eye patch. Then Marshall asks Lily a question and she freaks out, because she didn't see him. Ted enters comes back and is so happy, because he thinks he has found the girl of his dreams. Marshall and Ted go through all the facts Ted dreamed of all the time: She loves dogs, Scotch, knows quotes from Ghostbusters and she hates olives. The olive theory is based on that one partner has to hate olives and so the other one has to like them and to eat all the partner's olives too, perfect balance.

All are happy till Lily asks why he is back so early. Ted tells them that he walked her home, but instead of kissing her on the stairs (considered as the moment), he just left. Ted defends himself, but Lily attacks him about that. So Ted calls Barney who is playing laser tag to ask him about the kiss.

So all four meet at the bar again and Ted has to tell the entire story again. Barney is angry that Ted is again not wearing a suit. Ted tells them that she didn't give him the signal. Barney doesn't understand Ted and to show him that he was wrong Barney just kisses Marshall. So he asks: "Did Marshall give me the signal? No!" So Barney now knows for sure, that he and Marshall will never be together. So Ted finally sees that he made a mistake and should have kissed her. The problem now is that she is gone for a week to Orlando.

Then Robin is on TV and she is reporting from a bridge where some guy wants to kill himself. Lily tells Ted that he picked a beautiful girl this time.

So Ted planes to go over to Robin's again to kiss her.

Barney convinces Ted to suit up and so all four drive over to Robin's place. Before that Ted enters the Bistro where he had dinner and steals the blue horn from the wall.

At Robin's place Ted is freaking out. Marshall and Lily put even more pressure on him. Ted already plans for his wedding at that moment. Ted is afraid of Robin's dogs, but she at least opens her window to speak to him. So she invites him up.

Barney starts to talk with the cab driver about hot girls while they are waiting.

Up in Robin's apartment Robin asks Ted why he came back at 1 am in a suit. He starts to talk about olives again, so she offers him a drink.

In the cab Barney starts to talk with Marshall about the olive theory. Marshall has to confess that he likes olives too, but he told Lily he hates them, because she likes them so much.

Upstairs Ted and Robin are dancing and her dogs are staring at them, but they only have eyes for each other. Ted tells her that he is in love with her! Flashes of people yelling what, including Robin.

Back in the cab, Marshall tells Ted that he will marry Lily under any circumstance. He also tells Lily that he likes olives too, but she just kisses him.

Upstairs Ted and Robin sit on the couch next to each other, both confused and thinking. She is freaking out completely, because Ted told her that he loves her.

In the cab the three agree that Ted and Robin might be in bed already and so they can leave.

Now Ted leaves and begs Robin not to call him a psycho. Ted tries to fix everything, but again he doesn't kiss her, he just shakes her hand, but it's obvious that Robin wants that kiss now.

Back at the bar Ted is disappointed that he will never see Robin again. Marshall and Lily tell Ted that the handshake was the signal. Barney agrees too, even though he doubts the signal theory. Even the cab driver who joined them agrees that this was the signal. Even Carl tells Ted that he should have kissed her. Marshall opens a bottle of Champagne, this time without accident. Ted still thinks it wasn't the signal.

The voice of the future confesses that this was the signal.

Back to the kids: The father (Ted) tells them, that this was the story of how he met their Aunt Robin. They complain that this wasn't the story of her mother, but he just tells them that this will be a long story.
