  • This is the true story of the pilot

    9.0
    "Superb"
Let me just say this. This is a great series and one of my favorite TV shows all time. Also before I give my review this show is not Friends or remake of it. There are some elements of Friends but that's it. Okay now I am going to review this episode. True story.

This was a great start to the show. Ted comes off as very likeable for both guys and girls. This was hard to do considering that most guys don't like other guys being romantic. But Ted (Josh Radnor) does it beautifully. Not only Ted but all of the main characters come very likeable. I like how Marshall and Lilly are this couple who have been together for a long time and how Marshall proposed all spur of the moment even though he had a plan to do so. You see how how close Lilly is to the Michelle character in American Pie. Barney also makes a good first impression. It shows how great of a actor that Neil Patrick Harris is. Robin was great as well. I enjoyed the scene with Ted in her room. She comes off as hot but not in that kind of way. The best part was at the end. It's what got me into this series.

Before I finish this review let me say this. (warning don't read this if have not seen this episode yet) Robin is not the mother. Just forget about it.
  • Ted falls heads over heals for an attractive news reporter while Marshall proposes to Lily.

The series premiere of How I Met Your Mother fields two storylines: Ted, the main character, thinks he's met his future wife in a Canadian news reporter, Robin Scherbatsky. This comes after he is somewhat saddened after his best friend, Marshall becomes engaged to longtime girlfriend and also friend of Ted's, Lily. Ted goes out on a date with Robin and when he tells his friends about it, they're upset because he frequently misses "the signal" to kiss her. I agree with them. Then, before she packs up and goes to Orlando for a week, Ted arrives at her apartment. He thinks of an excuse by saying he came to pick those olives she promised. (she hates olives, and he loves them) And while they're dancing, Ted loses it and says, "I think I'm in love with you." He tries to fix it and he does somewhat to a point where she kind of feels bad for him when he leaves, but he misses another signal and that's it. Both storylines were great and this was a fantastic beginning to a great show. Barney was kind of on his own playing laser tag and giving demands to Ted to wear a suit. The characters are funny, Robin's actually bearable. Ted sometimes talk a little bit too much [about himself] but he's overall a good guy. Barney's hilarious and Marshall's funny as well. Lily has her fair dose of funny moments, too. A great cast will make a great show.
  • This is the story of how Ted met Aunt Robin.

"Pilot" is an awesome series premiere! I love the introduction of all the characters and I love the introduction of what the whole show is about. I love how this show is about a guy named Ted and his telling his kids the story of how he met their mother. I love Marshall proposing to Lily. I love how Ted steals a blue horn at restaurant for Robin. My favourite part of this episode is Ted saying "This is how I met your... Aunt Robin". I give this episode a 10/10.
  • Racist comment ruined what would have otherwise been a perfect episode.

    8.5
    "Great"
I love the unique premise, the characters are cute, Ted, in particular, as the hopeless romantic is especially engaging, and the jokes are funny. I like how right off the bat--well, more like towards the end of the pilot--we already know that no matter what romantic relationship Ted and Robin develop, we know how it ends because she's known to Ted's future kids as "Aunt Robin". Although, he seems pretty head-over-heels for Robin, so whoever the mother ends up being must be preternaturally awesome.

The one thing that caught me off guard was Barney's (the character that's supposed to be the funniest and most popular) first line: "So you know how I had a thing for half-Asian girls?" His fetish is so specific that I consider it a racist remark. Why not "Asian girls"? Is there something wrong with pure Asian girls that only when their ethnicity is diluted with another race are they considered hot? As "HIMYM" has two female Asian producers/writers, I didn't expect a line like that. However, it may be a tongue-in-cheek remark. Barney, a chauvinistic bachelor who treats women like goods, is saying that although there was a "trend" for half-Asian girls, they're passe now, and the new fetish du jour are Lebanese girls (but again, if he said "half-Asians", why not say "half-Lebanese"???).

(I apologize for all the idioms and cliches.)
  • How I Met Your Aunt Robin. Great punchline to end a spectacular pilot!

You know when you can tell a pilot tries too hard? The script is good but it is overly thought out and it lacks a feel of "naturalism". The first episode of this comedy is well thought out, but it doesn't lack any naturalism. The characters are nicely established, the theme is pretty straight forward, and most importantly all the gags and jokes in just this episode alone are all "inside jokes". A comedy like Family Guy is heavily reliant on the use of popular culture, though the pilot of How I Met Your Mother can give you just as much laughs from creating its own jokes. That's the biggest charm of this pilot episode and leaves an awesome impression for things to come.

When Ted's best friend Marshall proposes to his girlfriend, Lily, Ted realizes he'd better get a move on if he hopes to find true love. Ted soon meets Robin in a neighborhood bar, immediately becomes smitten and scores a first date. But when Ted can hardly wait to see her again, his eagerness threatens to scare her away. Well, one of my best firends, told me to watch this show..."It's amazing". Well the first episode was good but I think that jsut because it was the pilot plus, there is more to be explained. So, I will be watching the next episode very soon. Hopefully, "It's amazing".

It is the beginning of the season I mean like duh it says pilot here, but there are a lot of things that they have to change... This show is too open, and too honest and it showed in this episode that they are like gonna say bad words or swear and it is really ugly to see that, I mean like ugly... But it is a fine show for me as of now and they just have to show their diplomatic character I would say.
  • This show is HILARIOUS! I am hooked and will continue to watch it every week. Funny, cute and goofy. It makes you wish you had a life like this!

This is a funny episode... This show is set in the future, but the entire episode is a flashback! This is confusing unless you watch the show I guess. In the year 2030 (or is it 2035?) the future ted has two children and he says "let me tell you how i met your mother" Then in the show Teds best friend porposes to Lilly and Ted desideds he needs a wife too. He goes to a resteraunt where his "other best friend" Barrny tries to hook him up. He ends up going to a fancy resteraunt with Robin and there is a blue trumpet on the wall. Robin is a reporter and she leaves to report on a story and as Ted sees her on TV he realizes she is 'the one' so he goes and takes the blue trumpet off the wall of the resteraunt and goes to Robins house and she hangs it on the wall. Then Ted says "I love you" and she gets mad because they have only been on one date and the episode ends with Future Ted telling his kids that "That is how I met your Aunt Robin"
  • Have you met Ted?

The pilot episode for How I Met Your Mother started fairly poorly but got more and more funny after they got the cliché moments and character introductions out of the way. The whole “wear a suit” and eyepatch recurring jokes are a little funny but aren’t a very strong aspect of the episode, though it’s all part of the character traits.

The twist at the end was brilliantly done as the name is never mentioned in the episode and until that point I was thinking “it’s a review worthy show but is it really going to last more than a few episodes without getting stale?” and my question was answered when it is revealed that the story was actually how he met their Aunt Robin, which may bring awkward moments later in the series or may help the plot along.

Overall, I hope the episodes to come are better quality than this pilot but the show shows some promise of becoming an entertaining program.
  • How He Met Aunt Robin?

A great episode to start the series. I actually thought that Robin was the mother, was surprised to hear that she wasn`t. After watching the episode, I almost fell in love with Ted, he`s cute and my God, he is romantic!!! Marshall and Lily make a great couple and Barney is a unique character, the show is made to be a hit! The friendship, relationships and possibly the funniest lines on TV. But I gotta admit that it was stupid of Ted to tell her that he loved her. Can`t you hold your tongue, boy? Good episode, perfect start! One of my must-watchs!
  • "haaave you met Ted?" or the story of how Ted met Aunt Robin...

great beginning of the great show: cool characters, awesome jokes, and smth other that'll keep me on watching the show till the end! (I hope:)

Lily and Marshall are my faves. she -- 'coz Willow is my fave from "Buffy" (weird reason, I know, but that's why I started watching "HIMYM"), he -- 'coz... I don't know... it's kinda hard to explain... he's just SO cute, and handsome, and...

love Barney... okay, does anyone, who watches the show, dislike him? and you know why not??? 'coz he's AWE... wait for it... SOME :)))

Robin is kinda cute... know, that I'll love her more in the later episodes.

well, Ted is my least favorite character. but c'mon, when all of them are so cool, it's not that bad.

FAVE SCENE: Marshall "surprises" Lily with "Boo!"

FAVE QUOTE: Marshall (to Ted): Kiss the crap out of this girl!

I have started to watch this after seeing some episodes I always knew it was funny but my friends here have recommended the show so many times I have decided to watch the show from the start, I'm three episodes into the series and I think this episode has been the weakest out of the three but I loved the ending because it was a great shock. Its always great to watch sitcoms they always make you laugh and are easy to follow I love Friends and How I met your mother has the same kind of vibe to Friends so I'm enjoying it. Barney is great and I like Marshall too.
  • How Ted met Aunt Robin.

    "Superb"
A great start to the show. A definitely great concept, this show. I love how they just jump right in to the action. This show is about a guy explaining to his kids how he met their mother, seems like a pretty simple concept. But this can range from hundreds of possibilities where you can take this show. The show starts out with Marshall getting engaged to Lilly. Ted, a single 27 year old, is now feeling bad about himself since he hasn't met "the one" yet. He tells all this to his eccentric friend Barney. "Have you met Ted?" he gets introduced to Robin. Who he thinks is the love of his life. Everything goes perfect on their date. But when Robin has to leave early before Ted gets a chance to kiss he goes out to look for her in NYC. He goes to her apartment and it's going perfectly until Ted says he loves her and ruins everything. He doesn't end up kissing her, because surprise to the viewers: it's how he met Aunt Robin. Not his future wife. Definitely a promising show, I will keep watching.

While this wasn't the perfect episode all on its own, it was the great episode that started a great show, and as such, it was definitely a great episode!

The overall plot was interesting, especially as we were led to believe that Robin was the mother, only to find out that she wasn't, right at the end.

All the character s were really great and having watched many seasons already, it's nice to see the differences over time. Lily looks really different!

Oeverall, it's an unmissable episode as it is that one that started it all. Great storyline for the most part, and hopefully this great story will continue to come to fruition!
  • Definitely not my type of show

I watched this on Sunday because it was on before Top Gear and was expecting a very funny show, along the lines of Will and Grace or a mediocre Friends episode. However I was disappointed. I thought that the show was extremely strange and the \"Smurf penis\" joke went on for a bit too long. The entire premise of wanting to marry someone because they had dogs and didn\'t like olives was ridiculous. The only character I found amusing was the \"Suit up!\" guy purely because he was a very strange person and unpredictable, which was detracted from because of the cliched humour from the rest of the episode.

I will watch the next episode, hoping it develops into something a bit more substantial.
  • One of the funniest pilots, leaves you wanting more.

This show is probably what has been missing from TV for a while. the cast is reasonably young, so there can be a number of seasons. However, as the episode is told as a flashback, that may be a problem in the future. The cast is brilliant with each and every one being perfectly suited for thier role.

I'm happy to see Alyson Hannigan back on TV after 'Buffy'. The basic premise of the show is really funny, and the voice-overs makes it kind of like 'Sex and the City'. Can't wait for the next episode and I hope this show has a long run asn atleast for now, its what audiences everywhere have been waiting for!
  • Great new romantic comedy show

    "Great"
Fresh new show that is funny, yet still has a decent story line to it. Great cast, good acting. The scene pauses with commentary are great too.

Just watched the pilot for this and I was impressed. I will be watching the rest of the episodes and will most likely become a regular viewer of this show.

Looking forward to see what this show has in store!
  • The pilot does it's job great and tells an interesting story and have good jokes, so what more can you ask for???

    9.5
    "Superb"
This is an excellent pilot in doing what pilots are for, introducing the characters and the story. We immediately meet old Ted and his kids. Cut to scene where Marshall practices the preposal to Ted, where it soon becomes very clear who is Ted and who is Marshall. Then the voice-over introduces Barney and we get a shot of said Barney getting shaved by a barber. Then we get some character-expansions of Ted and Barney at the bar. Cut back to the apartment where we're introduced to Lily and a few scenes later we are introduced to Robin, as someone Ted hits on in the bar. And by the end of the pilot, we have some rough estimates of the characteristics of all the main characters.

Not only does the pilot do it's job good, but I'm amazed by how well all the characters get along in the pilot. Can someone say chemistry??? Lily and Marshall may be the most functional TV-couple in like ever and it shows well already in the pilot (like when Lily disregards the olive theory), and the fact that Ted lives in the same apartment as Marshall and Lily doesn't seem awkward at all (something that I only remember scrubs has managed to pull off before them). Why they're friends with Barney isn't totally clear (but it get more explained later) and we've just seen the seed of friendship instead of love with Robin.

We also get a good story and jokes that are funny even after you have watched the episode several times, so all in all a very strong pilot.

It's one of those sitcoms I really feel like watching from time to time to feel much better about things. Things like bad feelings in life. But this episode is quite confusing because we still dunno who "the mother" is... but let's wait and see what happens next in Ted's life!
  • One of the best CBS comedies on the air right now.

    9.0
    "Superb"
To be honest, the only reason I decided I would check this show out was because Alyson Hannigan is in it. The show premiered several months ago. I had several episodes saved up but I just never watched them, until today. And I'm really glad I did.

I usually don't like CBS sitcoms but "How I Met Your Mother" is different. The characters are very likable and it's genuinely funny.

After his friends get engaged to be married, Ted decides the only way he'll be truly happy is if he can find his future wife as well, and he starts looking. He eventually meets Robin, a beautiful news reporter, but he blows his chances when he tells her he's in love with her. However, they remain friends and for now it looks like Robin will be showing up in the future.

This was a great pilot. Not perfect, by any means, and sometimes the humor falls flat, but for the most part, it's a charming and funny comedy, and the cast is excellent. Hopefully it will become the next "Everybody Loves Raymond". It's definitely a must watch for me now.

This is the show that could save sit-com TV. Neil Patrick Harris is amazingly funny. I just hope like all of the new sit-coms this show doesn't dissapear behind the reality tv buzz. It could very well be the next friends. I can't wait for the next installment. From start to finish all around great show.

That was a really good ep, but it made me a little sad that ted and robin wont\' ever be a couple :P i like the idea of them together. The Plot was as good as any other ep, if not better, i must say i am most impressed with the writing of this show. Plus i love Aly, so that makes it all the better :P lol. Thee Caca-Mouse, was compleatly genius! Genius i tell you! Absoultly hilarous! I loved that Lilly kept stealing Barney\'s drink, and the presistant \"HEY!\" she got from him lol. So all in all, great pilot!

What shall I say about this season's new sitcoms? Certainly most sitcom fans will admit that there weren't many good new sitcoms lately. While watching all those new pilots, I made a true revelation, a show I didn't even hear about in the first place but which to my enjoyment is the best new sitcom since at least three years.

I'm talking about How I met your Mother, which instantly prooves to be funny, in the line of classics such as Friends. The story might not be new at all, yet thanks to the little writing twist of telling the story 30 years later, it feels new, it feels fresh and it certainly is funny! Add one-liners that are really funny and a great cast as well as running gags such as "Have you met Ted?" and what you get is a show that will hopefully survive this year.

"How I met your Mother" is what the networks need, it is what the audience wants. Hopefully the ratings will reward the producers, the cast and the network.
  • Plot device works for the pilot, but there is concern for how it will play out for the whole life of the show. Should have been more Friends-like for greatest chance of success, but endearing, funny, and witty nonetheless, cast perfectly, with the girl p

Endearing pilot episode with a surprise ending. I don't know how the conceit of telling a story of "How I met your mother" will work for a long-lasting sitcom, but it works in this pilot episode. Perhaps they should have retitled the show to give it more of a Friends feel, and then bring in this looking back device as a temporary one for the season instead of being the linchpin for the whole show.

The actress who plays Robin is strikingly beautiful and enchanting. Tim breaks type by playing a guy who actually wants to be married, and is perfectly paired with the ultimate geeky bachelor in Neil Patrick Harris' character. The Lily and best friend relationship played for relationship laughs is endearing, but is relatively interchangeable. They should have made this series more Friends-like, because the friendship between Lily, her boyfriend (whose name escapes me), and Tim are probably the most compelling aspect of the show. How these people come together as a group is why I'll keep watching. Unfortunately, I think the plot device will get in the way of this series ever really catching on in the way it deserves to be.
  • Alyson Hannigan and Bob Saget's voice. For me, enough reason to give this show a shot!

Call me crazy, but I actually enjoyed Full House and the extremely lame jokes of Danny Tanner, which of course were meant to be lame. Hence, the charm...

Add Alyson Hannigan, my favourite character from the Buffyverse, and it can't go wrong, right? That was really what I was hoping, because, sadly, the opposite happens more often. Fortunately, this pilot episode was awesome!

Good jokes, often unpredictable... and even the predictable ones were so very well timed, that my friends and me couldn't help but laugh while acknowledging that we saw them coming lightyears away. That's good comedy!

Also, the ending, which I'm not going to spoil, was unexpected. I really thought all the characters were introduced and we were set to see how road to marriage would unfold. I can't wait to see what other surprises the writers have in store for us.

So... excellent stuff and I'm still loving Alyson! Two thumbs waaay up!
  • This could be it! The new "Friends"!

Well after seeing the first episode of How I Met Your Mother it just hits me. This is hilarious, brilliant and a great performance. The episode had it all in it. Some romantic (with the best pilot ending of this year) and well some stupid, nice people. The jokes are really good and definitively original. How does someone come up with a "Smurf-penis". The acting was really good and the show looks very promising. It thought the “you have to wear a suit man” was really good. I just hope we don’t see to much of going from present to past time, you can easily forget that part and just open every episodes with the guys instead of the kids, or least do not do those things to often, they intend to disturb to much. But for the rest of it, it can be as good as friends, time will tell.
  • While imperfect, the pilot was more funny than most sitcoms on tv today. Give it some time to grow and "How I Met You're Mother" may become the next great sitcom of our time.

    7.5
    "Good"
In this day and age where the sitcom is considered a dying breed, it's nice to know that with a little effort and a bit of creativity, the situation comedy can still be funny. While most attempts seem to fail miserably with over-used story lines and unfunny gimmicks, "How I Met You're Mother" seems to have beaten the odds. The show is told almost entirely in flashbacks, with only the beginning, ending, and a brief second of two in the middle showing the current time. It revolves around a father telling his two children the story of how he met his mother--although after the pilot episode, we're still not sure who that is. While I’m not sure how well the premise will work out (How long can these children stay on that couch listening to this story?), the show is pretty well written and funny. A few times I actually burst out laughing, which is rare watching sitcoms these days. The only problem with the show is the actors. Now, don't get me wrong. I was actually fairly impressed with the acting ability of the cast for the most part, but some of them don't quite fit yet. In particular, Alyson Hannigan's soft spoken nature, which we all grew to love on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", doesn't seem to fit some of the dialogue her character is given. Despite this however, I still felt that the show was solid and that the actors would grow into their roles. Many times when watching a pilot you can see that the show isn't going to work. Not so in this case. While the pilot was definitely imperfect, I have faith that once the actors are given more time to get used to their roles it will all start to gel. Watch out, because "How I Met You're Mother" could become the next great sitcom of our time.

  • Even without Raymond, CBS is still the place for comedy on Monday night. If you're a sitcom fan, this is as "must see" as it gets. This is what a pilot should be like.

    10
    "Perfect"
It's too early to tell whether this show will be a top comedy, but the pilot episode definitely deserves a 10 because it did everything a pilot should do without forcing it down our throats.

The problem with many pilots, especially in sitcoms, is that the writers feel they must introduce us to each character, which usually makes it feel forced, or just isn't funny. That is why usually I won't judge a show on the pilot alone, and will at least watch the second episode.

However, the writers of How I Met Your Mother nailed it! Even the parts I saw in previews were still funny, and the writers allowed the characters to "introduce" themselves through their (often funny) actions and dialogue.

And of course the ending of the pilot...that was so unexpected, and extremely clever.

If you're a sitcom fan, this is must see.
  • Can't Wait For More!

    "Superb"
Well, I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised to see that this show is absolutely hilarious. I knew right from the hand print on Alyson Hannigan's breast this was going to be good. Anything to do with Alyson Hannigan's breasts is good.

    Back to being somewhat professional.

Despite having the disugusting task of introducing the characters, the situation they're in, and- well, I guess that's all that needed to be intruduced- it was funny. It has a decent shot. Considering this was the pilot, and pilots tend to be not very good, there is serious promise. A very well written show with clever and witty humour. More, please!
  • Not as great as I thought it would be, but still pretty smart and funny and a great premise. Neil Patrick Harris was too hysterical for words.

    9.1
    "Superb"
I felt like I should have gotten more from this episode. I kind of felt like I had seen it in a way because of all the different promos of the show and that CBS Fall Preview they aired last week.

However, the show was still pretty great and how funny was Neil Patrick Harris? His character is probably my favorite of the show with his "suit up" and "de-(wait for it)-nied", he had me rolling for the whole episode. He's definitely funnier than I thought he would be. I hope he is in all of them and just as hystercial.

I love the premise of the show in that the father is telling his children how he met their mother. I really didn't see the twist coming with the woman we see Ted meet turning out to be their "Aunt Robin". I still wonder if that means that either Barney married Robin. Or what if it's Marshall and he didn't marry Lily after all? Good twist to keep me tuned, but I hope it's not going to be like that for every episode and we eventually meet Ted's wife and mother of his children.
