The day before his friends' wedding, Ted invites Robin to attend with him, assuming he checked the box to bring a date to the wedding. Barney tries to convince him this is a bad idea since this will not allow him to hit on eligible bridesmaids. Marshall and LIly discuss their wedding and how Lily wants to get married in the woods. Marshall wants a more traditional wedding.
Ted runs into the bride-to-be who tells him he did not indicate he'd bring a date on his RSVP card. Ted argues me must have and the bride forbids Ted from bringing Robin. He goes to tell Robin this, only to find that Lily and Robin have been shopping and Robin has purchased a great dress and is very excited. Lily tells Ted she's been playing him up to Robin in at attempt to help Ted's romantic standing with Robin. Ted can't tell her and at Lily's behest goes to the groom who say it's fine to invite Robin.
This leads to an argument and the wedding being called off. The bride heads to the bar where she runs into Barney who is only too willing to try and take advantage of the situation. Ted and Marshall go and talk to the groom, eventually getting the two to reconcile. Ted is then allowed to bring Robin to the wedding.
Ted shows up to pick up Robin, just as she gets the phone call to anchor the evening cast. Ted tells her to go and attends the wedding solo. The bride brings up Ted's RSVP card that indicates he was coming solo. Ted decides maybe he's meant to be single right now and Barney agrees. As Ted watches LIly and Marshall dance, he realizes things are too difficult with he and Robin and he should enjoy the single life he has. Just as he's come to terms with this, his sees a girl across the room. She smiles at him and the episode ends.
