Older Ted – "Kids, there's more than one story of how I met your mother. You know the short version, the thing with your mom's yellow umbrella, but there's a bigger story, the story of how I become who I had to become before I could meet her. And that story begins here." Barney finishes his saying of "legendary" and then wants to set Ted up on a date with a girl he knows. Ted tells Barney that he is not ready, so Barney asks him when he will be ready. Older Ted – "It was a good question. After a big relationship ends, you need some time to recuperate. Robin took a trip to Argentina and I went through my usual routine. I grew my break up beard, I repainted the apartment, and the truth is I was doing really good." During Older Ted's reminiscing, Barney interjected with several ideas for women Ted could date, but he was not interested. At the bar, Robin shows up with a guy, Gael, which prompts Ted to tell Barney that he is ready.
Marshall and Barney are playing video games and they are interrupted by Ted by telling them that Robin is trying to win the break-up. Marshall doesn't think that she is trying to do that, but Barney admits that she is trying to do the very thing Ted is accusing him of doing. They keep thinking back to the time when they met Gael and they can't figure out how to pronounce his name and they talk about what Gael does. Gael suggests that he can windsurf and have sex, but Barney wants to know how it is possible to do that. Barney tells them that he has done the research and it is not possible to have sex on a windsurfing board. Lily had asked Gael if he would like to go eat with her and Marshall and Marshall gripes at her about it. Marshall gets mad that Lily thinks that Gael is hot. Before leaving for dinner, Robin asks Ted if he is ok with her going out with Gael. At the bar when the others have left for dinner, Barney tells Ted that he will find Ted a better girl. When Barney turns around, Ted is already making out with a girl.
Robin apologizes to Marshall and Lily for everything being awkward, but Marshall is agitated about the situation and the whole thing becomes very uncomfortable when Gael begins to massage. Barney is trying to get Ted's attention and tells him that he has figured out what they can do. Barney tells Ted to ditch Amy, the girl Ted was making out with, but Ted doesn't want to leave her. Amy is mean to Ted and tells him to leave and calls him a nerd. Barney explains that he is Ted's wingman, but Ted isn't listening because he is making out with Amy again. Marshall gripes about Gael, but when he walks back into the living room from the kitchen, he spots Lily getting a massage from Gael. At the bar, Amy found Barney a girl and they decide to leave the bar and go to Amy's place which has a hot tub. Ted notices Amy's tattoos and Amy thinks that he should get some tattoos, but Barney complains and tells Amy no. Suddenly, a little boy comes out of the house and sees them in the hot tub and then runs to get his parents. The group has to run to get out of the people's backyard. Barney gets upset with all of the craziness and tells Ted that they are going to leave, but Ted daydreams about Robin and Gael having sex on the windsurfing board. Ted decides to get a tattoo, Barney protests, but Ted leaves in a cab. The girl that Barney is with asks him if he wants to have sex, so they run off. Ted and Amy are in the tattoo parlor and Ted is discussing what tattoo he wants, but the next thing he remembers is waking at home, alone. He looks for a tattoo, but doesn't look on the small of his back.
Ted walks into the living room and tells them that he had an amazing night, but that he almost got a tattoo but didn't. When Ted walks away, Lily and Marshall notice the tattoo, but they don't tell Ted. When Ted walks out, they call Barney over and when Barney shows up, they tell him about the tattoo, Barney almost faints when he sees the tattoo and Barney apologizes for freaking out last night. Barney makes innuendos about a butterfly and then hits him on the back, which makes Ted hurt. Then, Ted remembers what happened at the tattoo parlor. Amy tells him about her break-up with Steve, which so happens to be the guy that is doing Ted's tattoo. Everyone laughs at Ted, but Ted is confused when he sees Spanish massage oil. Marshall and Lily recount the previous night when Gael played the guitar and sang to them. Them Gael massages Marshall and helps his self-esteem. Gael also feeds everyone sensually. They apologize to Ted and Ted walks away mad out of the apartment. They then laugh about the tattoo. Ted shows up at Robin's apartment and complains to her about their break-up. Robin apologizes for showing up with Gael, but she tells Ted that she was lonely and that is why she met Gael. Ted asks her why she had to find someone so hot and that Ted cannot be better than Gael at anything, but Robin tells Ted that he is bigger in the male anatomy section. At the bar, Ted announces that he wins. Older Ted – "Kids, I can't really remember what got me through the whole Robin and Gale incident, I'm sure it was something profound and meaningful and not at all macho and petty. But after that, I was back on my feet and what followed was a new era in my life, a crazy time, unlike anything that came before it. It's funny looking back on those days, knowing now exactly what I was heading towards and what was heading towards me." In the crowd of people holding umbrellas outside of the bar, there is one lady holding a yellow umbrella. Barney is in his office when Marshall calls and he tells Barney to check his email. Marshall sent him a link to a website to slapcountdown.com. Barney is petrified when it begins its countdown.
