    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    • TRIVIA (1)

      • Plot hole:  While dining at the restaurant, Jeannie mentions a former master.  According to episode 1, the Blue Djinn imprisoned her in the bottle because she refused to marry him. In episode 2, Jeannie's father mentions the tragedy of the Djinn turning her into a genie when she refused, so there should be no time between her transformation and her imprisonment for her to have a master. Tony should be the only master she ever had.

    • QUOTES (8)

      • Jeannie: (about the harem dancer) She moves as gracefully as a dog scratching fleas.
        Armand: She is my wife!
        Jeannie: (pityingly) Sorry about that.

      • Jeannie: You ate hardly anything for dinner. (blinks a coconut cake for Tony) I almost made it myself. Do you know what is in it?
        Tony: Yes. 4000 calories!

      • Bellows: (Tony emerges from the capsule simulator, and discusses the results with Roger and Dr. Bellows) How are we feeling?
        Tony: Hungry, sir.
Bellows: Well, didn't you eat your tube of roast beef?
Tony: (a bit sheepish) That's what made me hungry!

      • Jeannie: (while dining at the "Tail of the Peacock" restaurant) I have not enjoyed myself so much since the night my master, the Sultan Haroun El Raschid, entertained the great Marco Polo!
Tony: You really met Marco Polo?
Jeannie: Oh, indeed, yes! We used to hunt wild boar together.
        Tony: What was he like?
Jeannie: (sighing) Oh, he was a wild bore!

      • Jeannie: So...except for the manner in which I speak, dress, and act...I am perfect?

      • Tony: Fresh asparagus...baked Alaskan... Napoleon Brandy with the coffee... (to Jeannie) Well?
        Jeannie: Well what?
Tony: Aren't you goanna conjure it up?
Jeannie: Oh, nay master, no more of these silly things. From now on you will do the conjuring master. With the credit card!

      • Jeannie: I have been studying the emancipation of modern women.
Tony: Oh...oh...that. I guess you got so caught up in it, you forgot to do the housework.
Jeannie: I did not forget. I decided to let you do it.
        Tony: Me?
Jeannie: (reads from the magazine) How not to be a drudge. Share the work with him.
Tony: Come on! But that advice is for ordinary woman. Now, you're not an ordinary woman. You are a genie, Jeannie. I mean, all you have to do is bat your eyes, and presto!
        Jeannie: No more presto!

      • Tony: What are you reading?
Jeannie: (lies on the couch and reads a magazine) I am reading a scroll. "The em-an-ci-pation of modern woman". What does it mean?
Tony: You don't have to worry about things like that.

    • NOTES (1)

      • This episode is loosely based on a popular 1964 film, "The Americanization of Emily," a romantic comedy with James Garner as a WWII GI in England and a prim war widow. TVland shows an edited version--two scenes are considerably shorter, including the transition to the final scene, making modern viewers wonder why Jeannie takes a job.
