Episode Summary

EDIT
Breaking the Lease
AIRED:
The show opens with the Ricardos and the Mertzes sitting around the Ricardos' piano, singing songs together. After the Mertzes leave, Lucy and Ricky wind up in an argument: Lucy wants to leave the bedroom window open, while Ricky wants it closed. The Mertzes, who are trying to get some sleep, are most irritated by the noise. They angrily phone the Ricardos and demand that they cut down on the racket. This, as you can imagine, leads to a big quarrel between the Ricardos and the Mertzes. Lucy and Ricky decide that they can't take it anymore, and they want to move out. However, there is a slight problem--they've signed a lease. The Ricardos thus decide to become the most undesirable tenants ever so that they can break that lease. They succeed in doing so, but ultimately decide that they can't move away and that they must apologize to their friends.moreless

This episode opens with the four friends (do I really need to explain that I'm talking about Lucy, Ricky, Fred, and Ethel?) sitting around a piano and singing. All of them are laughing and having a good time. Then they begin complimenting each other. It would be a very nice scene, but anyone who knows anything about television knows that scenes like this are always followed by a big fight. And the Ricardos and Mertzes are about to have a pretty big one. No ears get bitten off or anything, but still....

Lucy mentions as they sing that it is nearly two in the morning and that they are probably bothering their neighbors but Fred and Ethel have no problem with this. Then they leave, and Ricky and Lucy resume singing. Pretty soon they get a phone call from their friends who haven't been gone for a full two minutes at this point. Somehow, they've gotten into their pajamas and are now angry about the noise. Things get worse when Lucy and Ricky fight about whether or not to leave the bedroom window open. Soon, the noise gets bad enough that the Mertzes and the Ricardos begin to argue seriously about it. This ends with Ricky and Lucy planning to move out. This is fine with Fred and Ethel....so long as they pay out their lease. Ricky and Lucy have no intention of doing so....so they'll have to break it somehow!

If anyone is crazy enough to find a way out of their lease, it's that red-head. With her on his side, there's no way Ricky can lose! This is another good early episode of "I Love Lucy." The chemistry between the actors (including Vivian Vance and William Frawley who detested on another) is developing nicely and the story is funny and engaging even though we all know the Ricardos and the Mertzes will be friends again by the time the episode is over.....or do we? I guess you're going to have to check it out for yourself. Who knows? Maybe Fred an Ethel never appear again after this episode. And don't just check the episode guide to see if they are in the next one, mister! I'm on to your tricks.moreless

  • TRIVIA (9)

    • Blooper 1: During the rehearsal scene in the apartment, someone in the studio audience snaps a picture and the camera flash shinned on the stage.

Blooper 2: When Lucy is unpacking, and putting magazines in a barrel, one of the magazines has a picture of her and Dezi Arnaz on the cover. It's on the coffee table.

    • In the opening scene, Fred, Lucy, Ricky and Ethel are singing "I Want a Girl Just Like the Girl That Married Dear Old Dad". Fred, Lucy and Ethel are singing in one key, but bandleader and famous singer Ricky is singing in a different key!

    • The audio portion of this episode was used as a pilot for an unsold radio version of "I Love Lucy". A recording of the broadcast still survives to this day, and features Desi as Ricky providing narration for the introduction of the story, as well as describing visual actions within it.

    • The scene with Lucy and Ricky figthing over having the window open while they sleep comes from one of the real life disagreements between Lucille Ball, who liked the window open and Desi Arnaz, who preferred the window closed.

    • This is the first fight between the Ricardos and the Mertzes.

    • If Lucy and Ricky were making all that noise on purpose, and eventually having Ricky's orchestra rehearse at the apartment in the middle of the night, wouldn't all the other tenants complain?

    • When the Mertzes leave the Ricardo's apartment in the first scene, Ethel turns left in the hallway to go to her apartment and Fred turns right as the door closes.

    • In the final scene of the episode there is a magazine on the coffee table. The magazine has Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz on the front cover.

    • During the song scenes in the Ricardo's apartment at the end of the episode, you can see a flash during a number. That is from a audience member's camera.
