Fan Magazine Interview
AIRED:
A reporter for a fan magazine, Eleanor Harris, spends an "average day" with the Ricardos. Of course, it's anything BUT average for the happily married couple. And they might not be one so happily married, thanks to a publicity stunt that Ricky's agent Jerry has cooked up.moreless

  • Basically two stories.

    7.0
This episode feels a bit like two separate stories thrown together, both of which are classic farce plots: people pretending to be someone they're not and a misunderstanding that leads to suspicion.

It starts off promisingly. We finally get to see the main characters the way they look in the morning realistically, and the actors are enjoying it. (The only exception might me Desi Arnaz, whose idea of looking frumpy seems limited to forgetting to comb his hair. Unlike William Frawley, he's cleanly shaven.) When they hear that a reporter will observe them for a day, they all put on their best clothes. (There's something 'meta' about this, as the characters often look too brushed off during the series. There are plenty of episodes where they get out of bed all made up.) It's fun to see them go overboard in trying to convince the reporter that they're acting naturally.

The second half has a tired plot of a wife suspecting that her husband is cheating on her. The link with the previous story is that the reporter put the idea in Lucy's head, but you get the feeling you're watching another episode. It is somewhat saved by Minnie, an outrageous character who pushes Lucy and Ethel into the role of straight women.moreless

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • When Ethel opens the door to the Ricardo's kitchen during the second morning, you can see Fred (William Frawley) waiting for his cue if you look closely.

  • QUOTES (2)

    • Minnie Finch: (answering the first question of a phony survey) Do I know - Do I know Ricky Ricardo? Oh boy, I'll say I do. He's mad about me! I got a date with 'im for Saturday night.

    • Lucy: Oh if some woman tried to steal Fred away I bet you'd be singing a different tune.
Ethel: Yeah, Happy Days are here again!

  • NOTES (5)

    • Minnie's neighbor, played by Elvia Allman, had recurring roles on Petticoat Junction (as Selma Plout), and on The Beverly Hillbillies as Granny's nemesis from the hills, Elverna Bradshaw. Elvia Allman also played other roles in the I Love Lucy series, including the head of the candy shop in the famous "Job Switching" episode and much later as a reporter in the episode entitled "Homecoming."

    • Jerry Hausner and Desi Arnaz had an argument during filming. Hausner stormed out and was bitter towards Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball ever since.

    • This is Jerry Hausner's final appearance as Ricky's agent, Jerry.

    • Kathryn Card played "Minnie Finch" in this episode. Less than 30 episodes later, she would play Lucy's mother, Mrs. McGillicuddy.

    • The character of Eleanor Harris was based on the real-life journalist Eleanor Harris, who wrote the first biography on Lucille Ball.

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • Minnie: Say, your name wouldn't be Kinsey would it?
Kinsey performed a series of interviews and polls with people in order to understand human sexual behaviour.
