Lucy is my fav., but Ethel is a very close second. As a kid, I never noticed what a great actress Viv was, and what a great character Ethel was. She could great really get off some great one-liners, usually in reaction to Lucy and Fred. Example, on the episode "Ethel's Birthday" she finds her gift from Fred, hostess pants picked out by Lucy. She thinks the gift is ridiculous. She asks Lucy what they are, and Lucy says "they're hostess pants, you wear them when you give smart dinner parties", and Ethel replies with the classic, sarcastic retort "I was wondering what to wear to all those smart dinner parties I give".

Frederick Hobart Mertz was my favorite, he had the best lines and retorts plus I loved his personality, very close to what he was in real life. Decades later Jack Albertson based his "man" character on Fred's cantankerism (sic) William Frawley never learned the other's lines or actions, he only memorized his clues and lines so he never knew what the context of what he was replying too, reacting too, asking about etc etc making his perfromance even more noteworthy
